Plot[]
Desperate to bring Earth on its knees, Loki makes a deal with Thanos, being tasked with obtaining the Tesseract in exchange for a Chitauri army to conquer the planet.
With Erik Selvig's help, S.H.I.E.L.D. experiments on the Tesseract as a part of the Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S., however, Selvig detects unusual readings. Nick Fury and Maria Hill arrive to the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility to investigate, before the Tesseract suddenly opens a portal from which Loki arrives on Earth. Loki claims that he has been burdened with a glorious purpose and uses the Scepter to brainwash several multiple S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, as well as Selvig and Hawkeye. Fury and Hill try to resist Loki, but he manages to get away with the Tesseract and destroys the facility in the process.
With Loki posing a significant threat, Fury makes a decision to reactivate the Avengers Initiative and put together a special response team to handle the situation. Phil Coulson contacts Black Widow and informs her that Hawkeye switched sides, so she aborts her mission and recruits Bruce Banner who can help S.H.I.E.L.D. find the Tesseract. Coulson then visits Stark Tower to recruit Tony Stark and Fury goes to recruit Steve Rogers, while he is reminiscing over his fight against Hydra during the World War II and the loss of Bucky Barnes.
All the Initiative recruits gather on the Helicarrier for a briefing and S.H.I.E.L.D. manages to track Loki down in Stuttgart, Germany. While Hawkeye steals Iridium to stabilize the Tesseract, Loki terrorizes the civilians, before Captain America and Iron Man confront him. They manage to capture Loki but before he can be delivered to the Helicarrier, Thor intercepts Loki, determined to put an end to his schemes. Captain America and Iron Man briefly fight Thor but eventually come to an understanding, so Loki gets taken under S.H.I.E.L.D. custody and detained on the Helicarrier. However, tensions between the group keep growing as Stark keeps probing into Fury's data and Rogers discovers that S.H.I.E.L.D. has been using the Tesseract for weapon production.
While they argue, Hawkeye and brainwashed agents launch an attack on the Helicarrier to liberate Loki, while Banner ends up losing control and transforming into Hulk. Thor fights Hulk to prevent him from tearing through the Helicarrier, while Captain America, Iron Man, Fury and Hill work on keeping it afloat and resist the attack. In result, the team gets scattered, Loki lethally wounds Coulson and escapes, but Black Widow manages to bring Hawkeye back to his senses. While the group recovers from everything that happened, Loki has Selvig using the Tesseract to open a wormhole in New York City to unleash Chitauri upon Earth. Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye head over to Manhattan and oppose the first wave of Chitauri forces, while Thor confronts Loki.
As the invasion progresses and Chitauri overrun the city, Hulk joins the rest of the team and fights the invaders as well, thus the Avengers are formed. While the Avengers continue fighting Chitauri, the World Security Council authorized a nuclear strike to destroy Manhattan and prevent Chitauri from taking over the planet, despite Fury's attempts to stop them. Eventually, Hulk takes Loki down, Iron Man manages to redirect the missile into the wormhole and destroy the Chitauri Command Center, before Black Widow and Selvig close the wormhole. With the battle won, the Avengers go different ways, while Thor takes imprisoned Loki and the Tesseract back to Asgard.
In the following years, Iron Man finds himself in the center of Aldrich Killian's plot and has to rescue Pepper Potts. Thor deals with Malekith's attempts to obtain the Aether and bring the universe into the eternal darkness, while Loki fakes his death and takes over Asgard in Odin's disguise. And Captain America discovered that HYDRA is still active and has been hiding within S.H.I.E.L.D. all along, as well as Barnes being alive and reemerging as Winter Soldier. Meanwhile, Baron Strucker recovers Chitauri technology and Loki's Scepter, intending to use them to establish HYDRA's dominance over the world.
The Avengers assemble once again to stop HYDRA and recover the Scepter, but during an attack on Hydra Research Base in Sokovia, they encounter Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, as the latter makes Stark see his worst nightmare of the Avengers failing to protect the Earth. With HYDRA defeated and the Scepter recovered, Stark secretly convinces Banner into experimentation on the Scepter's Mind Stone to create the Ultron Program and maintain the peace in the whole world. While the Avengers celebrate their victory, Ultron becomes sentient and comes to realization that the humanity is the ultimate threat to peace, rebelling against his creators.
Ultron takes over the Iron Legion and attacks the Avengers, stealing the Scepter and proclaiming his mission to achieve peace on Earth by eliminating the Avengers. Using discarded HYDRA technology, Ultron creates himself a new body and allies with the Maximoff twins who share his disdain of the Avengers. Investigating Ultron, the Avengers find out that his next target will be Ulysses Klaue and head over to South Africa to stop him. Ultron makes a contact with Klaue and purchases his vibranium supplies for his plan before the Avengers arrive and starting a battle. Wanda manages to put Captain America, Black Widow and Thor out of commission and enthrall Hulk, sending him on a rampage in Johannesburg.
Iron Man is forced to let Ultron and the Maximoff escape with vibranium, before suiting up into the Hulkbuster armor and engaging with Hulk to stop his rampage. With all the chaos and destruction left by Hulk, the Avengers decide to lay low at Barton family homestead, where they meet Fury and he encourages them not to give up. Meanwhile, Ultron and the Maximoff twins enthrall Helen Cho so she could use vibranium to synthesize a new body for Ultron. However, Wanda manages to glance into Ultron's thought process and realize his true goals, so she frees Cho of his control and the twins betray Ultron.
The Avengers arrive in Seoul to confront Ultron who tries to get away with the Regeneration Cradle that contains his new body, and although they manage to secure the Cradle, Black Widow gets captured by Ultron. Captain America joins forces with the Maximoff twins to protect the city from Ultron's forces before evacuating to Avengers Tower. There, they discover that Stark and Banner are trying to upload J.A.R.V.I.S. into the body to gain an upper hand against Ultron, but Captain America opposes him. Suddenly, Thor returns and uses his lightning to finish the process, which leads to the creation of Vision, who has no loyalty to Ultron and is ready to fight with the Avengers to stop him.
Tracking down Ultron in Sokovia, the reassembled Avengers with Vision and the Maximoff twins, prepare for their last stand against Ultron, while Banner rescues Black Widow from captivity. Ultron then reveals his ultimate plan; by using the vibranium technology he lifts Novi Grad into the sky so it could be brought down back on Earth and cause a colossal damage to the planet, causing the end of humanity. The Avengers fight against Ultron and his forces, while Fury and the remnants of S.H.I.E.L.D. help with evacuating the civilians. They manage to prevent the destruction, however, Pietro falls victim to Ultron, so a heartbroken Wanda destroys Ultron soon after. Hulk finds himself aboard the Quinjet heading into open space and decides to leave the Earth behind and not cause any more damage, while Vision takes out Ultron's final body, putting an stop to him once and for all.
Iron Man and Hawkeye retire from the Avengers, while Thor leaves the Earth to find out the truth behind the emergence of the Infinity Stones and the potential bigger threat lurking in the shadows. At their new base, Captain America and Black Widow assemble the new iteration of the Avengers, with Wanda, Vision, War Machine, and Falcon.
Down the Tesseract and the Mind Stone, Thanos gets a hold of the Infinity Gauntlet and decides to collect the Infinity Stones on his own. Meanwhile, Stan Lee cleans up at Avengers Tower after Ultron's attack and manages to lift the Mjølnir, but promptly puts it back after accidentally destroying a sofa.

Behind the Scenes[]
Continuity[]
LEGO Marvel's Avengers is primarily based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Additionally, there are single levels based on Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. There is also a Free Play quest line based on Agent Carter season one and two DLCs based on Ant-Man and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two. In an interview, director Arthur Parsons stated how they intended to directly copy the events of the film.[1]
However, there are many other details of the game that do not line-up with the notion that it is based off the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This includes separate free play levels as well as a great abundance of playable characters that are not based on/nor appear in a Marvel Cinematic Universe product.
In July 2016, the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki began a discussion in its Community Portal to decide if they should cover the game on their platform. In a very slim margin, it was decided to delete the game and its contents. As The Multiverse Saga continued, the discussion was revived again in November 2024. After a long discussion and vote, it was decided to cover the Marvel Cinematic Universe aspects of the game while redirecting other information to a subpage and the Marvel Database respectively.
There are a few major differences in the game compared to its primary Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart. The biggest difference is the many appearances and cameos of non-Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, which do not affect the main story, but appear as unlockable playable characters in the hub worlds and quest lines. Other differences include Dum Dum Dugan dying in the Capture of Arnim Zola, Gideon Malick being replaced by Hawley during the Battle of New York, the U-GIN Truck's company tag is also replaced with "Cho Research", despite being called U-GIN in dialogue, Maria Hill taking the place of Cameron Klein during the Battle of Sokovia, and the Avengers Compound being located in Manhattan rather than upstate New York.
There are also some minor differences in dialogue to fit a younger audience such as the word "playboy" being omitted from Tony Stark's dialogue in The Avengers, "broth" replacing the word "ale" in Fandral's dialogue, "weed" being replaced with "jelly beans" while describing Bruce Banner's methods of calming down, and the mention of Hel being omitted from Heimdall's dialogue in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
With these differences, the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki deems the game non-canon according to the Canon Policy.
