Kunar is a regional province in Afghanistan near the Pakistan border.
History
Tony Stark traveled through the Kunar Province in a Humvee convoy during a business trip to Afghanistan in order to host a demonstration of the Jericho missile for the United States Air Force. He refused to travel in the same Humvee as James Rhodes, and while chatting with the airmen assigned to escort him, the convoy was attacked by members of the Ten Rings terrorist group. The soldiers were killed and while trying to flee, Stark was affected by the explosion of one of his own weapons, causing a large amount of shrapnel to penetrate his Bulletproof Vest and injure him.
While unconscious for the effect of the injuries, he was kidnapped by the Ten Rings.[1] Rhodes arrived at the area five minutes later, but by that time, Tony Stark was already gone.[2]
