Phil Coulson arrives to find the 0-8-4
S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Phil Coulson and Melinda May were sent to Krasnoyarsk Krai to retrieve an unknown object from the Burkov Mining Facility. Anton Ivanov and SVR unit were sent with the same mission; however, they found Coulson was already there, claiming he had been sent to be investigated a bio-hazard leak, although Ivanov's commander remained highly skeptical of his true reasons for agent Coulson being there.

While they were speaking, May then seemingly betrayed Coulson and stole the 0-8-4 for herself before escaping, causing Ivanov's commander to take Coulson captive, with Ivanov looking at his hostage as he closed the doors of the van. However, Ivanov and his unit were soon attacked by May who freed Coulson and escaped, as a direct result, Ivanov's unit were tortured and executed for the failure, although Ivanov managed to escape the same punishment. Ivanov went on to directly blame Coulson and all of S.H.I.E.L.D. for the incident which killed his allies.[1]

In 2017, Ivanov, who became leader of Watchdogs, kidnapped S.H.I.E.L.D. director Jeffrey Mace. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. kept investigating Mace's kidnapping, learning about the existence of the Superior and his obsession for Phil Coulson. S.H.I.E.L.D. eventually located the Superior's base at Krasnoyarsk Krai and decided to storm the place. The team split up to find Mace and take control of the base. Coulson was found the Superior who confronted him about the events of the infiltrating the Burkov Mining Facility. Before they could fight, Quake joined them and decided to take down the Superior herself while Coulson left to find Mace. After a violent fight, Quake collapsed the ceiling on the Superior, heavily wounding him.

While Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons went to the communications room, they heard about the presence of Aida, prompting Simmons to try to find her with James Davis. In the meantime, Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie found Mace being beaten up by several Watchdogs, who they got rid of before rescuing Mace.[1]
