Kolkata (Bengali: কলকাতা), also known as Calcutta, is the capital of the state of West Bengal in India.

Bruce Banner sought refuge in Kolkata to avoid being captured by the United States Armed Forces. While living in the city, he used his medical knowledge to help people, while struggling to control his transformations. In 2012, S.H.I.E.L.D., who had tracked Banner, decided to recruit him to locate the Tesseract. Employing a little girl, they sent her to plead Banner for help, claiming she needed assistance to treat her sick father. The girl led Banner to an empty cottage in the outskirts of the city, where the girl then jumped out of a window, causing Banner to realize he had been lured.
Natasha Romanoff then emerged and notified Banner that S.H.I.E.L.D. needed his help in finding the Tesseract, which emanated gamma radiation. Banner angrily shouted at Romanoff, prompting her to aim at him with a gun, which was a ploy to prove that there were S.H.I.E.L.D. agents surrounding the cottage. Banner agreed to help S.H.I.E.L.D. and the parties left Kolkata.[1]
