"The man's Inhuman. The homeless man's Inhuman. They're after him!"
Daisy Johnson[src]

The Kidnapping of Charles Hinton was an attempt by HYDRA to capture Charles Hinton.

Background[]

"I'm building an army."
"And another army will stand to fight them. You won't be able to convert them all."
"I won't have to."
Gideon Malick and Phil Coulson[src]

Over years, the HYDRA leader Gideon Malick took part in ceremonies during which one traveler was chosen to be sent to Maveth in order to help and try to return the ancient Inhuman Hive so that he would lead both HYDRA and the Inhumans in a rise to power. Despite S.H.I.E.L.D. trying to stop him, Malick was ultimately successful in this endeavor.[2] He welcomed Hive on Earth and ordered his men to have Hive recover from his very weakened condition as Hive was using Grant Ward's deceased body as a vessel. In the meantime, Malick decided to recruit Inhumans to build an army for Hive to command when he would be ready. After enlisting several of them like R. Giyera and Lucio,[3] HYDRA's attention came to Charles Hinton, a homeless man with supernatural abilities.[1]

Kidnapping[]

"How did you know that it was HYDRA who's coming?"
"Because that's what she'll yell when they come out of the sky."
"HYDRA!"
Daisy Johnson, Edwin Abbott, and Melinda May[src]

S.H.I.E.L.D. tracked down a 9-1-1 call made by Edwin Abbott in which he claimed HYDRA was coming from him and that he needed Daisy Johnson's assistance, despite the fact that Johnson did not know him. Actually, Abbott had received a vision from the future after touching Charles Hinton, a homeless man living nearby his grocery store.

Once the S.H.I.E.L.D. team was on site, Abbott tried to explain the situation to Johnson and Phil Coulson, who had a hard time understanding what Abbott meant. While Coulson went to ask some questions to Hinton, Melinda May saw a HYDRA QuadCopter approaching, confirming Abbott's vision.

The QuadCopter launched missiles in the street and began shooting everyone, killing Abbott in the process right in front of Johnson. Johnson figured out that Hinton was actually an Inhuman and that HYDRA intended to kidnap him in order to recruit him into their army. She tried to rescue Hinton, but he was captured in a net and pulled in HYDRA's QuadCopter. Johnson managed to touch him right before he was abducted, making her have a vision of the future just like Abbott: she notably saw Lincoln Campbell with the face covered in blood, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons holding hands under what resembled snowflakes, Coulson seemingly shooting at Johnson and Hinton being taken away by HYDRA.[1]

Aftermath[]

"Let me show you what will happen."
Hive to Rowan Hamilton[src]

Charles Hinton was brought to the ancient Inhuman Hive, who chose not to sway him and took Hinton with him at the Transia Corporation Building where Gideon Malick intended to purchase the Transia Corporation. Hinton was forced to touch CEO Rowan Hamilton, making him foresee the death of his colleagues devoured by Hive's parasites. Although Hamilton agreed to sell the company, his colleagues were killed nonetheless, fulfilling the vision provided by Hinton.

Meanwhile, Daisy Johnson told S.H.I.E.L.D. about the vision she had when she touched Hinton right before he was abducted. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents used these elements to prepare for an impending Battle at the Transia Corporation Building and practiced so that Melinda May could rescue Hinton and defeat Malick, as they were unaware of the existence of Hive on Earth. In the end, Johnson herself went to the building, later accompanied by several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and the ensuing conflict featured all the elements of Johnson's previous vision which ended with Hinton's death.[1]
