The Kidnapping of Caretaker was a mission taken by the Blood to attempt to find Marduk Kurios's dagger.
Background[]
In order to protect Ana Helstrom and Daimon Helstrom, Caretaker and Louise Hastings agreed to separate them and raise them individually. This led to disagreements between Caretaker and the Blood, who had been hunting the Helstrom siblings' father for a long time.[3] Daimon grew up to hunt demons, and became known as a traitor among them,[4] although he remained on bad terms with the Blood.[2] Caretaker went to Portland in search of the Keeper's Skull, and helped Ana and Daimon find the Keeper's Skull.[5]
Basar then attacked the Blood Hotel and killed all of the Blood members present, freeing the patients.[5] This caused the Blood to question Caretaker's allegiance, even though he did not know about the attack.[3]
Kidnapping[]
The Blood sent Lee and other members to kidnap Caretaker, hoping to be able to find Marduk Kurios's dagger and stop him once and for all. They put a bag over his head and tied him up in his own van, and took the bag off once they were driving. Caretaker commented on the theatrics, and Lee explained that they were told to take every precaution, since his allegiances came under question. They took Caretaker to his house and loosened his restraints, taking him out of the car, where he was greeted by Esther Smith.
Smith sat him down, and told him that Kthara had escaped Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health. When Caretaker asked to be released so he could do his job, Smith told him that his job was to keep Ana and Daimon Helstrom under control, which he had failed to do. Caretaker tried to explain to Smith that they were on the same side, although Smith refused to listen. Smith talked about Caretaker's house and the bad memories that must accompany it before turning her attention to his knife collection, aware that one of them must have been Marduk Kurios's dagger. She had Lee open Caretaker's shirt, revealing a scar, and began testing the knives on his scar, knowing it would reveal which knife belong to Helstrom.
She called Daimon Helstrom and offered a partnership, which he refused, while Lee continued to test knives, and returned to hear Caretaker saying that war often results in innocent lives lost. They debated whether Ana Helstrom belonged in the category, and Smith then found Marduk Kurios's dagger. Caretaker asked Smith not to use the knife, as it would bring out the worst in demons, which Caretaker refused to participate in.[3] He tried to convince the Blood not to attack Daimon Helstrom, but they did it anyway.
While being moved in a truck, Caretaker asked his two guards to use the bathroom, and they refused to stop. Caretaker asked for a bottle to relieve himself in, and the guards laughed, asking how he would use a bottle while his hands were cuffed. Caretaker revealed that he had escaped his cuffs and attacked the two guards, escaping from the Blood's custody.[6]
Aftermath[]
Caretaker visited Louise Hastings and offered her a chance to escape the Blood and get a fresh start together in Mexico, although she turned it down in order to receive treatment for her lung cancer.[6]
