"When I first joined S.H.I.E.L.D., I thought it was going straight. But I guess I just traded in the KGB for HYDRA."
Black Widow[src]

KGB, the Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti, translated in English as Committee for State Security, was the main security agency for the Soviet Union until its collapse.

History

This section requires expansion

A young Natasha Romanoff was recruited into the KGB, where she learnt some of her skills, such as the usage of a particular substance to poison a beverage causing its consumer to feel sick.[1]

Upset after learning that S.H.I.E.L.D. was infiltrated by HYDRA, Romanoff told Steve Rogers that she felt that she left the KGB to join HYDRA, instead of S.H.I.E.L.D.[2]

Bucky on Ice

A file on the Winter Soldier, written by the KGB.

In the wake of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s collapse, many files were declassified which contained information about both S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA. One of these was produced by the KGB, and had information on the Winter Soldier. Natasha Romanoff was able to obtain the file, which was being stored in Kiev, and handed it to Steve Rogers so he could find more about what his friend went through at the hands of HYDRA, and where he might have headed following his defection from the terrorist group.
