"It's your old buddy, John Garrett. Same rugged good looks, just, maybe a little less rugged."
―John Garrett to Melinda May[src]

Jonathan "John" Garrett was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, who was recruited by Nathaniel Malick in 1983 to join his fight against S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from their alternate future. With Malick's assistance, Garrett received his Inhuman powers via a blood transfusion. Using his newly acquired abilities, Garrett aided Malick in his quest to take control of the world alongside the Chronicoms. He was later given his mission to plant bombs inside the Lighthouse, but was ultimately betrayed by Malick when he detonated the bombs, before Garrett could get out. Realizing Malick never cared about him, Garrett allied himself with S.H.I.E.L.D., and helped them to escape the Lighthouse, before being accidentally shot and killed by Victoria Hand.

Biography

S.H.I.E.L.D. Trainee

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Hottest Student

"Oh, I'm not sure I want to lose all my money to the hottest recruit."
"Hmm?"
"Well, top test scores, and an ace pilot."
Nathaniel Malick and John Garrett[src]

Once John Garrett was recruited into S.H.I.E.L.D., he had soon been able to prove himself as being one of their top recruits, gaining top test scores, as well as gaining a reputation as an ace pilot. During this time, Garrett had also gone to a performance of Twisted Sister, where he saw Deke Squad open for the band.[1]

New Allegiance

Recruited by Nathaniel Malick

"I appreciate you blowing smoke up my ass, but I don't think we've met."
"We haven't. But I know a lot about you. Like how your relationship with S.H.I.E.L.D. is headed for a very, very sad breakup."
―John Garrett and Nathaniel Malick[src]

Garrett playing darts at The Krazy Kanoe

During a break from all his S.H.I.E.L.D. training, Garrett spent some time in The Krazy Kanoe, where he drank some beer and played darts by himself. However, while he was there, Garrett was greeted by Nathaniel Malick, who had questioned if Garrett would be interested in a challenge, which Garrett agreed to, thinking that Malick was referring to a game of darts. When Garrett claimed that any good challenges made life worth living, Malick questioned if he was a philosopher, which he denied.

While Garrett simply called himself a good dart thrower, he suggested that they play for money, only for Malick to note that he did not want to lose all of his money to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top recruit, as Garrett was surprised that Malick knew this. Garrett then listened as Malick made it clear that he knew about all his top test scores, and his abilities as a pilot, noting that he needed a pilot to join his team. However, Garrett noted that he did not know Malick, and would be unsure about joining his team.

However, Malick went on to claim to know a lot about Garrett, suggesting that his relationship with S.H.I.E.L.D. would be heading toward a bad breakup, which Garrett merely scoffed at. Malick had told Garrett that in seven years time, Garrett would be injured by an IED while in the Balkan Mountains, only for S.H.I.E.L.D. to refuse to come rescue him, resulting in Garrett turning his back on S.H.I.E.L.D. and joining HYDRA, as Garrett laughed as he had listened to Malick's claims with amusement.

Garrett laughed at his suggestion that he could see the future, while suggesting that Malick escaped from their psychiatric ward. While Garrett and Malick laughed over this, Malick then shocked Garrett by firing a shockwave from his hand, throwing a beer out from Garrett's grip. Surprised, Garrett called it a neat trick, only for Malick to claim that it was a superpower, and offered Garrett one. In response, Garrett called to the bartender and ordered two beers for them, agreeing to work with Malick.[1]

Looking into his Future

"You saying this thing's hazardous?"
"Well, nothing to worry about, it's not gonna kill you, it'll just blow your mind. You'll be meeting Sibyl, she'll guide you."
"There's a lady in there?"
―John Garrett and Nathaniel Malick[src]

Having agreed to work with Nathaniel Malick, Garrett was then brought to Afterlife, which had recently been taken over by Malick's crew, who were standing guard around all of the hallways, while Malick claimed that the name was fitting, as everybody that he had brought there had been saved from their fate and given a new beginning. While they continued exploring, Garrett questioned how Malick had been able to see into his future, as Malick promised that he would show him.

Garrett was then shown the Time Stream, as Malick had explained that it had been sent to them from the future, which was being worked on by Grady, promising that Garrett would be able to take a look. Malick explained to Garrett that, in an alternative timeline, Grady had been assassinated by S.H.I.E.L.D. once they had deemed his technology to be a threat, although Garrett questioned if the Time Stream would be hazardous to him, although Malick simply promised that it would not hurt him.

Garrett is given access into the Time Stream

Grady then invited Garrett to use the Time Stream, as Malick explained that Garrett would meet Sibyl in their Time Stream, as Garrett scoffed at the concept. Malick went on to explain that he and Sibyl were seeking the same thing which Garrett had sought, in his alternative timeline, immortality. Garrett then placed his hands into the Time Stream, viewing his alternative future, where he was killed by Phil Coulson, although Garrett had also entertained himself by watching Loki killing Coulson.

Following that experience in the Time Stream, Garrett joined Malick, as they then witnessed Grady working on transfusing Inhuman powers, as he had drained all the fluids from Li, which were then being delivered directly into the blood of Durant. Malick noted that their process had previously been messier, but as he quoted Daniel Whitehall, he claimed that they had experimented and found a better solution, before Garrett was introduced to Kora, calling her the only Inhuman they trusted.

Garrett stood by as Kora and Malick discussed the old ways of Afterlife, which Kora had once been raised in, as Malick explained their intentions to steal the powers from the Inhumans, giving them to those they deemed more worthy. Garrett listened as Malick introduced him to Durant, whom he explained had been a mercenary, before S.H.I.E.L.D. shot his plane out from the sky in an alternative timeline, as Malick claimed that S.H.I.E.L.D., HYDRA and the Inhumans had all committed horrors.

Interrupting, Garrett had asked what power Durant was getting, as they witnessed Durant gaining control of his power, when he manifested a blade from the air. Garrett then witnessed Malick noting to Kora that Li was in a lot of pain, suggesting that she put him out of his misery, calling it mercy. Garrett and Malick stood back, as Kora placed her hands onto Li's head, killing him with energy blasts. Garrett had noted that he wanted that power, as Malick promised they would take it from S.H.I.E.L.D..[1]

Receiving Inhuman Powers

"Speaking of pretty, I get to keep the old baby blues, right?"
"Good question, you know, I'm not really sure."
"What? Whoa, no, no, no, no. Time out, man! That is not what I signed up for!"
―John Garrett and Nathaniel Malick[src]

Eventually, Gordon was captured by Nathaniel Malick's Crew, when he had teleported inside Afterlife to rescue the other Inhumans. As a result, Garrett was then given the opportunity to be given Gordon's Inhuman power, as he was strapped down to a seat, as Grady being transfusing his blood with Gordon's. During this process, Malick brought in the captured Phil Coulson, whom Garrett had greeted as an old friend, as he had seen their relationship from the alternative timeline.

Garrett watched on as Coulson asked Malick to release Gordon, as Garrett commented that he had seen their relationship within their alternative timeline, including everything that Coulson did to him. However, Coulson made it clear that he was unsure who Garrett was, as Garrett then reminded him that he killed the alternative version of himself with the Peruvian 0-8-4, as Coulson realized who he was, as he noted that Malick had been smart to bring back one of his greatest enemies.

Garrett had noted that he used the Time Stream to see Coulson die in multiple different ways, commenting that his favourite had been Loki stabbing him into the heart with the Scepter, with Coulson noting that Garrett had not changed at all, despite all the confusing timelines. However, they were then interrupted, as all of Grady's machines began to work, as Malick then noted that he would be getting the good stuff, as Gordon's blood was infused into Garrett's, with Coulson watching on.

As their transfusion continued, Garrett's condition was checked on by Malick, while Coulson then attempted to reason with Kora. As he glanced over at Gordon, Garrett had noted Gordon's lack of eyes and questioned if this procedure would cause his eyes to go, although Malick made it clear that he was not sure if this would happen. This answer caused Garrett to panic, as he insisted that the transfusion stop, since losing his own eyes was not something he agreed to, as he began feeling pain.

However, just as Garrett insisted that he had changed his mind, he involuntarily teleported out of the room, as he reacted with a cheer, as he burst back through the door, amazed by his new Inhuman power, while Malick complimented him and praised his new power. Garrett had then excitedly explained how he had been able to disappear and reappear, having been able to get out of the areas that he did not want to be, as Coulson noted that this was called teleporting, which Garrett liked.

While Garrett excitedly considered the possibilities from his teleportation power, Malick insisted that he refocus, as he questioned if, with practice, Garrett would be able to take them to the Lighthouse, which Garrett insisted that he could. With that, Malick gave Garrett his jacket, while noting that the target was Jemma Simmons, and ordering Garrett to help him find her. Once Malick took Garrett's shoulder, he used his power to teleport out of the room, attempting to get them to the Lighthouse.[1]

Kidnapping of Jemma Simmons

Garrett comments about seeing Deke Squad

"Planning a little road trip, looking for an open-minded gal to tag along."
"Thought you'd never ask."
"Oh, I'm sorry, babe. You ain't who I'm looking---"
―John Garrett and Melinda May[src]

Following several failed attempts, Garrett was finally able to teleport himself and Nathaniel Malick into the Lighthouse, as they found themselves in the storage room. As he looked around the room, Garrett noticed a T-Shirt for Deke Squad, noting that he had seen them perform with Twist Sister. However, Malick ignored the comment, noting that they still had things to do, as they then prepared to split up and search the base, with Garrett noting that an easy job would not be any fun.

Garrett made it into the Lighthouse's laboratory, where he was confronted by Melinda May, as she questioned who he was, as Garrett simply grinned and reintroduced himself, calling it a blast from the future and noting that he was the same Garrett, just younger, much to May's surprise. As May questioned how Garrett had been able to find the Lighthouse, he explained that Malick helped him, before May attempted to take Garrett off guard, as she attacked him, only for Garrett to then use Gordon's power to teleport out of the way and across the room.

Having crashed into the opposite wall, Garrett admitted that, while he knew where he intended to teleport, he struggled to make the landing, while he commented on how it was Phil Coulson who called this teleporting. May realized that Garrett was using Gordon's power, before questioning what Garrett was doing in there, as Garrett claimed that he and Malick were planning their road trip and were seeking a lady to join them, although he did not mention who they had targeted, as May mockingly claimed that she had thought he would never ask.

As Garrett noted that May was not who they were really looking for, he was unprepared for May to attack him again, as she kicked him in the chest, knocking him into the cabinet, before throwing punches at Garrett. While Garrett was initially able to block several of the attacks, May swiftly gained the advantage, as she punched him in the gut before kicking out his knee. Once May landed two more heavy kicks against Garrett, he acknowledged that he was outmatched, before Garrett mockingly said goodbye and had then teleported out of the room.

Garrett teleporting Jemma Simmons away

While Garrett had been distracting May, Malick had been able to confront Jiaying and Quake, which resulted with the death of Jiaying, which had always been their plan. During the ongoing chaos, Garrett was able to teleport himself directly behind Jemma Simmons, grabbing her by the throat before she could even react. Garrett was then able to teleport himself away from the Lighthouse before Daniel Sousa, who had been escorting Simmons, could shoot at him. Garrett then teleported himself and Simmons onboard Zephyr One, reuniting with Malick.

Once Garrett tied up Simmons, he took their pilot's seat on the Zephyr and flew the plane out of the Lighthouse, successfully completing the mission, while Garrett and Malick smiled about their successes. As Garrett flew the Zephyr, he commented that his day was getting better, from gaining his superpowers and flying the spaceship, calling this his best day ever. While Garrett continued to fly, Malick explained to Simmons that Sibyl and the Time Stream had predicted that only Leo Fitz could stop their mission, and they had needed Simmons to find him.[1]

Capturing Deke Shaw

Garrett taking Deke Shaw as his hostage

"It's okay, Jemma, he's got nothing... Okay, that was something, but he'll tire out eventually."
"This one's got a mouth on him."
Deke Shaw and John Garrett[src]

Garrett managed to continue flying Zephyr One, as they collected members of Nathaniel Malick's Crew, before flying the ship into deep space, ensuring they could no longer be tracked on radar by S.H.I.E.L.D.. While in deep space, Garrett came across Deke Shaw, who had stayed on the ship when they left the Lighthouse, as Garrett managed to teleport right behind Shaw, armed with a Chronicom Rifle, as he immediately proceeded to take Shaw as his prisoner.

Garrett proceeded to beat Shaw into submission, until he got a call from Malick, ordering him to bring Shaw to him, so he could present him to Jemma Simmons, in an attempt to convince her to cooperate, as Malick's plans were failing. Garrett proceeded to beat up Shaw, as he had tried to reassure Simmons that he could deal with it, until Garrett kneed him in the gut, causing Shaw to admit that it hurt, with Garrett noting that Shaw had a big mouth. Since all Garrett's torture was failing, Malick proceeded to threaten to crush Simmons' spine.

Garrett watched on as Malick demanded to know how Simmons was hiding Leo Fitz's memory from him, while Shaw begged him to stop it. However, Malick stopped once he then noticed D.I.A.N.A. had been implanted in Simmons' neck. Although Shaw attempted to threaten him, Malick used a shockwave to throw Shaw into the wall, knocking him unconscious, as revenge for Shaw killing Wilfred Malick. While Garrett looked down at the unconscious Shaw, Malick ordered the rest of his crew to find a way to get D.I.A.N.A. out of Simmons' head.[2]

Destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Garrett teleports Kora out of the Lighthouse

"I always wanted to be part of something bigger."
"We're just getting started."
―John Garrett and Nathaniel Malick[src]

As their plans were coming closer to getting completed, Garrett was ordered to teleport himself back down onto the Lighthouse, in order to go rescue Kora. Once Garrett had teleported himself inside the Lighthouse, he found Kora in the middle of a battle against Melinda May, only for Garrett to surround Kora with his energy shield, and immediately teleporting her back to Zephyr One before May could do anything to stop him.

Once Garrett and Kora had returned to Zephyr One, they witnessed a fleet of Chronicom Destroyer Ships arriving to join their battle, before then firing down upon every single S.H.I.E.L.D. base down on the Earth, successfully destroying the Triskelion, and the Hub. While S.H.I.E.L.D. was destroyed before his eyes, Garrett watched closely and remarked that he had always wanted to be a part of something bigger, as Nathaniel Malick commented that they were just getting started, before leaving Garrett to continue watching and enjoying the destruction.[2]

Following the destruction of the S.H.I.E.L.D. bases down on Earth, Garrett rejoined the rest of their Crew, as they flew Zephyr One to the Chronicom Destroyer Ship. Once onboard, Garrett had armed himself with his Chronicom Rifle, as they then marched Jemma Simmons and Deke Shaw through the corridors. Garrett stood by as Malick warned them both, that it would be their last chance to surrender Leo Fitz's location, with Shaw simply mocking all Malick's efforts, only for a Chronicom to use a device that would melt D.I.A.N.A. from inside Simmons' head.

Arriving on the bridge, Garrett stood back as they were greeted by Sibyl, with her and Malick then discussing the successful destruction of all the S.H.I.E.L.D. bases. However, Sibyl noted to Malick that the Lighthouse had been able to survive their attack, as Malick then calmly acknowledged that the Lighthouse had been designed to survive any external assaults. Malick then turned to Garrett, noting that they would simply use a different approuch, as Garrett would plant Chroni-Bombs inside of the Lighthouse, with Garrett nodding to Malick.[3]

Bombing of the Lighthouse

Garrett beginning to place the Chroni-Bombs

"I just need a little more time... Ten minutes tops. Otherwise, if this baby blows, I'm gonna blow."
"Then I'm gonna take this opportunity, in case I don't see you again, to thank you for your service."
"Son of a bitch!"
―John Garrett and Nathaniel Malick[src]

Since the Lighthouse was able to survive their complete destruction of the S.H.I.E.L.D. bases, Garrett teleported himself onto the base, armed with Chroni-Bombs, as he sent a message through to his allies, to confirm that he had arrived. Garrett then took out a map of the Lighthouse, and began looking for the support beams throughout the base, which would allow them to cause the entire base the collapse.

While Garrett explored the base, and continued placing all of the Chroni-Bombs, he eventually teleported to his next target, only for him to then be greeted by both Phil Coulson and Melinda May. Noticing that he teleported onto a letter X, Garrett had questioned it's meaning, as Coulson explained that they had been able to predict that this spot would be one of Garrett's targets. Garrett had then noticed that May was holding Quantum Field Disruptors, as he questioned if they thought he would have actually just teleported straight into them.

Garrett finds himself trapped by S.H.I.E.L.D.

However, Coulson then insisted that it would have been cooler for them to teleport onto Garrett, which Garrett laughed about, only for Yo-Yo Rodriguez to run into the area and wrap all of the Disruptors around Garrett in an instant. When Garrett had then attempted to teleport out of the base, before the Chroni-Bombs exploded, he had then found himself unable to leave the area, with the Disruptors painfully keeping them in one spot, with Garrett's second attempt causing him to collapse from the pain they caused him, as Coulson stood over him.

Coulson had demanded to know how they could disarm the bombs, only for Garrett to insist that they could not do it from there, since all of their controls were back on their Chronicom Destroyer Ship, while May questioned how many Chroni-Bombs there were, with Garrett then explaining that he used an even dozen. As Garrett had then insisted that they would destroy the Lighthouse, Coulson held up his phone and insisted that, unless he had wanted to be destroyed, alongside the entire base, Garrett would have to call off the bombing remotely.

Garrett reluctantly agreed, and called Nathaniel Malick, who had noted that he thought that Garrett would have returned by now, since all of the Chroni-Bombs would explode soon, with Garrett then requesting that Malick deactivate the bombs for him. However, Malick insisted that this was not the plan, as Garrett was expected to destroy the Lighthouse, to which Garrett promised that he was onboard for that plan, while shaking his head at Coulson and May, claiming that he needed ten minutes, as he would be killed once these bombs exploded.

However, to Garrett's horror, Malick had dismissed the warnings, as he instead simply thanked Garrett for his service and hung up the call, with Garrett calling him a son of a bitch, as he realized that Malick had betrayed him and just left him to die. With seconds left until the bombs exploded, Garrett looked on as Coulson noted that they did not have time to get to the surface, only for Rodriguez and grab the bombs out of his hands and rush to away, with all the bombs exploding, causing the roof to then collapse on top of Garrett, injuring him.[3]

Alliance with S.H.I.E.L.D.

"I was shown a future where S.H.I.E.L.D. abandoned me, how come it's playing out the exact opposite?"
"Malick had showed you an older timeline, this ones different, nothings written. It's not too late to be on the right side of history."
"Looks like I'm wearing a white hat from now on."
―John Garrett and Phil Coulson[src]

Once Garrett awoke, he found all his injuries had been treated by Melinda May, after he had been carried into the main control room. As he attempted to back sit up, Garrett called Nathaniel Malick a son of a bitch, as May mistook this for him cursing them, as Garrett then commented that Malick was the bastard who had left him to die in the Lighthouse once all the Chroni-Bombs exploded.

Sitting himself back up, Garrett had then commented that he had seen a future where S.H.I.E.L.D. abandoned him, as he then questioned how it was now playing out in the opposite way, to which Phil Coulson told him that Malick had shown him an alternative timeline through the Time Stream, and nothing was written in this new timeline. With that, Garrett decided to turn his back on Malick and rejoin S.H.I.E.L.D., before then noticing that Coulson was becoming distracted by the secret signal had started coming from their computer systems.

Garrett looked on while Coulson and May discussed the signal, deducing it not to be from the Chronicoms, but was the location of an 0-8-4, with Garrett questioning what an 0-8-4 was, with Yo-Yo Rodriguez noting that it was an object of some unknown origin, which could be dangerous. Once Garrett heard Coulson discussing if it was better to go to the signal, which could be a trap, or stay trapped inside of the Lighthouse, Garrett stood up and then insisted that if they took off his Quantum Field Disruptors, he could use his powers to get them out.

However, both May and Rodriguez had refused to free Garrett from the Disruptors, to which he insisted that, as they were in a new and altered timeline, he was not the same John Garrett that they had known, although Coulson claimed that this just made this even worse. Despite this, Coulson noted that they still had no other options to get themselves freed, much to May's great frustration as she had glared at Garrett. Despite all of their concerns, Coulson and the others freed Garrett of the Disruptors, as he agreed to teleport them out.

Garrett gets shot and killed by Victoria Hand

Keeping his promise to them, once he had been freed of the Disruptors, Garrett took ahold of Coulson, May and Rodriguez and teleported them to The Krazy Kanoe, as this was the location for their 0-8-4 signal. However, as soon as they arrived into the room, they found several people were already there, as Brandon Gamble ordered them to surrender at gun point, much to their surprise. In the heat of the moment, Garrett attempted to rearm himself, only for Victoria Hand to shoot him in the head before he could draw his gun, killing him instantly.[3]
