Joe with a captured Deke Shaw

In an alternate 1955, Joe was sent by Wilfred Malick in order to attack Niles Lindmore and retrieve an object which Lindmore was supposed to deliver to Daniel Sousa, who would then deliver it to Howard Stark. When he and another HYDRA operative arrived at the Lindmore Residence, he instead found Deke Shaw, who had been looking for the object as well. Joe and his companion brought Shaw to Malick's mansion, where Shaw claimed to be a salesman who had entered the house looking to talk to Lindmore. Shaw referred to the other operative as incompetent, so Malick shot him, while Joe watched. Malick later recognized Shaw as a person who had saved his life, so Joe watched Shaw leave the mansion unharmed.[1]

Attempted Assassination[]

"I see him."
"Get it done. The organization depends on it."
―Joe and Wilfred Malick[src]

Joe was later sent by Wilfred Malick to kill Daniel Sousa before he could deliver the object to Howard Stark's man in Los Angeles. He arrived at Hotel Roosevelt and called Malick, informing him that he would soon follow through. He began following Sousa, but lost him. He then found someone who he believed to be Sousa, and shot him twice in the back. He watched "Sousa" fall into the pool, and called his boss to tell him that Sousa had been killed, although Stark's man had the object.[1]
