Biography[]

Early Life[]

Jeff Kaplan lived in Eastview, New Jersey with his wife Rebecca, with whom he fathered a son, William. The family lived in a two-story house and had a dog named Greg.[1]

William's Bar Mitzvah[]

"Sorry to interrupt. We've been informed there's something happening with the anomaly in Westview. Everybody needs to go home as quickly and as safely as possible."
―Jeff Kaplan[src]

On November 11, 2023,[2] Kaplan and Rebecca drove to the Eastview Synagogue, where their thirteen-year-old son William was having his bar mitzvah ceremony. Kaplan and Rebecca sat and watched as William recited the Parshat Shemini from the Torah. Following the ceremony, a party was held. Kaplan sat at a table as William joined him, and Kaplan asked his son if he was having fun and whether he had eaten. Rebecca then joined them and kissed William on the cheek as she professed her love for him, which William thought was gross; Kaplan then chimed in that both of them were gross. William was then pulled away by his friend to the dance floor, where William sat in a chair as he was hoisted up.

Kaplan was then notified that the situation regarding the nearby Westview Anomaly had escalated and that Eastview citizens were asked to return home. Kaplan got on stage and interrupted the celebrations to inform the attendees of the situation in Westview and that they all needed to go home. Kaplan then joined Rebecca as they took William and left.[1]

"It's not going through. William!"
"Oh, no. Jeff. Look."
"I'm gonna flag them down."
―Jeff Kaplan and Rebecca Kaplan[src]

As Rebecca drove them back home, Kaplan tried to change through the radio stations, although all they could hear were prior conversations Wanda Maximoff and Vision had that were being broadcast. Frustrated, Kaplan slammed the radio button a few times, but Rebecca grabbed her husband's hand and told him that it would be okay. Kaplan then noticed that the Hex around Westview was receding and informed Rebecca. As she was distracted looking at the Hex, neither of them noticed a truck which was headed their way until William yelled at Rebecca.

Rebecca quickly swerved left and drove down a bank before the car turned sideways, slamming the rear side of the car, where William was sitting, directly into a tree, with William taking the full impact of the hit. As Kaplan came to, he called out to William but quickly noticed that he was not responsive and that he was bleeding. Kaplan then pulled out his phone and dialed 9-1-1 as his wife asked if William was okay, and he informed that William was bleeding. Kaplan then told his wife that the call was not going through, but Rebecca noticed an Eastview Police Department SUV driving past them. Kaplan stated that he would try to flag them down and exited the car. He successfully got their attention and brought Officer Alice Wu-Gulliver to the car, who asked Rebecca if William was breathing. When Rebecca confirmed that he was, Wu-Gulliver told them to not move William as an ambulance was en route.[1]

Family Troubles[]

Jeff and Rebecca Kaplan

Kaplan and Rebecca speak to William in the hospital

"Hey, buddy."
"Hey."
"This is where you'd say, 'Since when do you call me 'buddy'?"
―Jeff Kaplan and William Kaplan[src]

Kaplan headed to the Eastview General Hospital with Rebecca, where they spoke to a doctor and learned that while William Kaplan would pull through his injuries, he was suffering from amnesia. Kaplan asked whether William was fine physically, which the doctor confirmed. The Kaplans then entered the room and greeted William as 'buddy,' and when he responded in kind, Kaplan stated that William should have pointed out that Kaplan does not call him 'buddy.' Rebecca then gave Kaplan a look, which Kaplan registered. William then told them to stop fighting, and Kaplan assured William that they were not fighting. He then told William that the doctor had cleared him to be discharged the next day, and Rebecca added that he would only be discharged if he was okay with it.

The next day, the Kaplans brought William back home, and Kaplan told William that he was glad to bring him back home. He then headed to turn on the air conditioning. Just then, Greg began barking at William, and Kaplan told the dog to stop barking as it was just William. While in the kitchen, Kaplan thought to himself that it was hard dealing with William's amnesia and worried about what they would do if he never remembered. William then spoke up and asked if he could head upstairs to his room by himself, which Kaplan allowed. Before he left, William asked if they could have dinner when he came back down, adding that it would be his treat, to which Kaplan chucked and agreed.[1]

Return to Family Life[]

Billy Kaplan's Parents

"What, no Eddie?"
"He had to go home."
"Oh, man, I made that pot roast he likes so much. I even made the potatoes in the air fryer. They’re super crispy."
―Jeff Kaplan and William Kaplan[src]

As William Kaplan began to remember his life, the Kaplan family life returned to normal. By 2026, William had introduced his boyfriend Eddie to his parents, and Kaplan took notice of the fact that Eddie liked his pot roast. One night during the fall season, William went out with Eddie. Kaplan then made the pot roast that Eddie liked and put potatoes in the air fryer to make them crispy. When he finished cooking, he sat down next to Rebecca on the couch as they watched television. When William returned, Kaplan asked him where Eddie was, and was disappointed when William told him that Eddie had gone home, and mentioned the pot roast and the potatoes he had made.[1]

Personality[]

"Oh, my God. This is so hard. When will he remember?"
―Jeff Kaplan[src]

Jeff Kaplan is a jovial, good-natured husband and father. While at his William's bar mitzvah's ceremony, he sat and watched William read the Torah with a smile on his face. During the party, he sat at a table and smiled at William as he asked if William was having fun and whether William had ate, and put some food on the plate for William. When William was injured in a car crash, Kaplan's first action was to check on William and immediately call for the police when he noticed William was bleeding and unresponsive, even going as far as to run after a police car to flag them down.

When William suffered from amnesia, Kaplan was concerned whether he was adding on to William's stress. However, mere minutes after William's first day back home, Kaplan also had thoughts where he complained that it was very hard dealing with an amnesiac son and wondered when his son would regain his memories, worried that he never would. When William seemingly regained his memories, Kaplan returned to his earlier nature. He was supportive of his son, and was in the habit of cooking dinner to include William's boyfriend Eddie as well.
