Biography[]
Air Force Lieutenant Colonel[]
Finding Iron Man[]
- "What's your blood alcohol level, Tony? What in the hell are you doing?
"Just out for a stroll, Rhodey." - ―James Rhodes and Tony Stark[src]
James Rhodes was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force and sent in F-22 Raptors when he found an unknown combatant in the Maggia and Ten Rings-controlled areas. However, his friend, Tony Stark was talking on the same radio frequency. An angry Rhodes asked what he was doing and Stark said not to shoot at him and he would explain later. Rhodes called off the Raptors, but warned Stark not to enter his air space again.[2]
Arguing with Tony Stark[]
Rhodes berates Tony Stark
- "I'm not the problem here. It's the Maggia. They're the ones supplying criminals with weapons."
"No, the problem Tony is that you are fighting a war and you're not a soldier." - ―Tony Stark and James Rhodes[src]
Rhodes drove to Tony Stark's Mansion and found him in the garage with Pepper Potts, where he immediately started ripping into him. Tony Stark asked Rhodes to hold off for a second because it was not the best time. Stark went back to his argument, saying he was not a problem, but the Maggia was. Rhodes disagreed, saying that the actual problem was that he was fighting a war and was not a soldier. Stark agreed, saying he was an army and he would destroy the Maggia.[2]
Ending the Maggia[]
Rhodes calls Iron Man
Despite their argument, Rhodes decided to help Iron Man on a mission to destroy the Maggia supplies. On the way there, Rhodes explained that the headquarters controlled the factories, so if Stark took those out, then the factories would crumble. He then asked who was in charge of Stark Industries while Stark was away. This happened to be Obadiah Stane. As Stark arrived at the base, Rhodes reminded him that the workers were hostages and innocent.
Rhodes directs Iron Man
As Iron Man fought more, Rhodes realized that he recognized the scheme and that once the trucks with shipments were out of the factories, they would kill all of the workers. Stark did not believe this, but Rhodes yelled, saying this was not a game. As more fighting ensued, Stark accessed Maggia communications and heard a man giving orders to destroy the factories. Rhodes did research and came back, telling Stark the man speaking was Mark Scarlotti, a former Stark Industries employee whom Stark fired. Iron Man promptly took care of Scarlotti as Rhodes noted that Stark should become an Air Force pilot.
Rhodes calls Tony Stark at Flying Fortress
Later, Rhodes accompanied Stark via a call when he attacked the Nefaria Compound. In the end, Rhodes applauded Stark for his victory, but Stark did not see it that way due to the amount of weapons they had as well as the injuries sustained to Whitney Nefaria. He also helped Stark in his final bout against the Maggia and helped assure Stark that the Flying Fortress did not fall onto any land and instead landed in the water.[2]
Advanced Idea Mechanics[]
Rhodes walks in on Tony Stark
- "Listen, there's a problem with a nuclear base in Russia and we can't sent in troops for obvious reasons, but there is another option."
"There are always other options, Rhodey." - ―James Rhodes and Tony Stark[src]
A problem arose with a Russian Nuclear Facility which was suspected to be caused by A.I.M. Rhodes traveled to Stark Industries Headquarters and walked into Tony Stark's office, seeing how he was finally going through his cliental list. Stark claimed that he was now worried of which criminals had his weapons, to which Rhodes defended, saying the Pentagon were a big client.
Rhodes tells Tony Stark about A.I.M.
Stark got defensive, believing the government wanted to buy his suit, but Rhodes assured him that was not the case and instead asked Stark to deal with the problem in Russia. When Stark heard who was behind it, he did not believe it until Pepper Potts called, revealing that A.I.M. was the top client of Stark Industries. Iron Man then flew to Russia and found Boris Bullski at the head. Rhodes helped Stark by call and saw how Bullski unleashed Tatyana, a turret.[2]
Issues in the Ocean[]
Rhodes calms down an angry Tony Stark
Rhodes talked to an angry Iron Man at his mansion and listened as Iron Man went on a rant about how awful A.I.M. was. Rhodes tried to interject, but Stark kept talking about how they needed to be stopped, which Rhodes agreed with. Stark then talked about how he had an obligation to stop them. Rhodes finally got a chance to talk and said how a ship had lost contact and they believed it was A.I.M. Stark left, saying to message him the information. This left Rhodes alone in the garage. Rhodes called Iron Man as he got to the ship and listened as Stark took it down. However, Stark started attacking his own allies, leading Rhodes to ask what he was doing. Stark apologized, explaining for there seemed to be another force controlling his movements. Stark overcame the effects and saved the ship.[2]
More Issues with A.I.M.[]
Rhodes instructs Iron Man
- "This is absolutely out of control. Imma talk to Washington and see––"
"No!" - ―James Rhodes and Iron Man[src]
When alarms started blaring at Stark Industries Headquarters, Rhodes called Iron Man, who explained that Titanium Man had returned to kill him. Stark eventually defeated Titanium Man, but learned that Obadiah Stane was behind everything.
Rhodes makes sure Iron Man is okay
Later, Rhodes found that Stane attacked Stark. Not only that, but Pepper Potts had been kidnapped. Despite Stark's condition, he decided to go after her, which Rhodes cautioned against. As Stark fought to save Potts, Rhodes found that A.I.M. sent missiles at their own silos where Potts was held, confusing Rhodes as to why. When Stark got Potts, Rhodes went to contact his superiors, but was told not to by Iron Man. Instead, Stark went on to attack the Proton Cannon, which he explained to Rhodes could mean dire consequences. As he approached the cannon, he realized it belonged to Bruno Horgan, whose designs were sloppy, but effective. Rhodes listed as Stark destroyed the cannon and talked about possible microwave radiation. Rhodes disagreed with this conclusion, stating how he heard of possible solar energy that was being used.[2]
The End of A.I.M.[]
Rhodes calling Iron Man
Rhodes accompanied Iron Man via call as he gave him the coordinates to A.I.M. Headquarters. When Stark arrived, Rhodes confirmed that it was the base and that with their weapons destroyed, they were staying there for the time being. Rhodes listened as Stark took down the headquarters and in the end, defeated A.I.M. Stark then asked Pepper Potts to find Obadiah Stane while he and Rhodes repaired the armor.[2]
Evacuating the City[]
Rhodes with Iron Man
At Tony Stark's Mansion, Rhodes listened to Tony Stark's argument with Obadiah Stane as it became clear it was too late to talk each other down. Therefore, Stark left to defeat Stane at Stark Industries Headquarters. While he did so, Rhodes started work on evacuating the city. In the end, Stane was killed.[2]
Personality[]
Rhodes is a very stern individual who believes in a no non-sense approach when it comes to events regarding military-like scenarios. He berated Tony Stark many times, but also allowed him to complete his mission if it meant he could get to places the United States Air Force could not.
Abilities[]
- Master Tactician: Rhodes' strategic mind allowed him to become a colonel lieutenant for the United States Air Force where he sent in the F-22 Raptors believing Iron Man to be a threat. He also cautioned Stark against his missions, but also allowed Stark to do them because it allowed the military not to have to get involved when jurisdiction made it hard to.
