- ―Obadiah Stane to A.I.M. President[src]
Obadiah Stane was the business partner of Tony Stark and former interim CEO of Stark Industries who planned to take over the company by becoming Iron Monger.
Biography[]
Resentment of Tony Stark[]
Weapons Shut Down[]
Stane berates Tony Stark for his actions
- "This company makes weapons. It is your family legacy."
"'Was'. Legacies change. People change. Maybe it's time for a new company." - ―Obadiah Stane and Tony Stark[src]
Having heard Tony Stark had shut down weapons operations at Stark Industries following his captivity, Stane found Stark in his garage. Stane started berating Stark, asking if he was trying to ruin the company. Stark asked if that was a rhetorical question. Stane then asked Pepper Potts how she dealt with Stark. Stane then brought up the Stark legacy, prompting Stark to say that legacies change and it was time for a new one. Stark then left, angering Stane.[1]
Given a Difficult Ultimatum[]
Stane argues with Tony Stark
- "Simple logic: we are going to destroy our inventory."
"I'm sorry... what did you just say?!" - ―Tony Stark and Obadiah Stane[src]
Later, Stark Industries Headquarters was suddenly attacked by the Maggia. During the attack, Stane found Pepper Potts on the ground and helped her up just as Tony Stark came marching through the door. Stane started scolding Stark for leaving during the attack, which Stark deflected. Stane demanded that they hire private contractors to protect themselves. However, Stark refused saying that instead, they needed to destroy their remaining supply. This angered Stane, but Stark demanded that he do so.[1]
Argument about the Maggia[]
Stane discusses business with Tony Stark
- "Really, Tony. Why don't you leave the business side of things to those who are... better suited. Just stick to what you do best -- making your toys."
- ―Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark[src]
Tony Stark came to Stane talking about how he found a member of the Maggia selling Stark Industries weapons. As a punishment, Stark wanted to make their deal void, saying that they should not be selling them to civilians. Stane disagreed, saying that Luchino Nefaria and the Maggia was a billion dollar deal. However, Stark insisted and stood his ground, leaving no choice but for Stane to comply. Later, Stane tipped off a group of men to where Iron Man was. They successfully shot Iron Man down, but could not win in combat.[3]
Finding the Armor[]
Stane with the Mark I Iron Man Armor
While Tony Stark was off on business that he neglected to explain, Stane was in charge of Stark Industries and eventually found the armor that Stark used to escape Afghanistan. Looking at the helmet, he remarked how beautiful it was. He told scientists to get started on a replica right away.[1]
Merger with A.I.M.[]
Stane proposes a merger
- "A merger would be a smart move, for both of us. We'd be stronger, more profitable, and safe from outside influence."
- ―Obadiah Stane to A.I.M. President[src]
Stane called the A.I.M. President and talked about how A.I.M. and Stark Industries is under siege and the Maggia had become a threat. Therefore, he offered a solution to merge A.I.M. and Stark Industries so they could become stronger and more profitable. The president asked about Tony Stark to which Stane assured him that Stark was going to retire.

Later, Stane and the president finalized a merger, but Stane made sure to ask to keep it under wraps. Although they would keep it a secret, they would start working together immediately because Stane wanted to see what A.I.M. could do with Stark technology. While mimicking a golf swing, Stane clarified that it was the power source he was interested in.[1]
Angry Arguments[]
Stane rushes A.I.M.
- "You got everything you need. If you can't send the prototype, then I have to assume you don't really have one."
"Of course we have one."
"Then send it!" - ―Obadiah Stane and the A.I.M. President[src]
Hearing of Iron Man's more recent take down of weapons, Stane called the A.I.M. President, angry that he had not completed their plan yet. The president claimed he needed more time for the power source, which Stane argued that he claimed he already had. The president told him it was not that simple, but Stane was done waiting and told him to make it that simple.[1]
Revealing His Plans[]
Stane on call with Iron Man
- "Your life's been a waste, Tony. But your death would be a gift to the world."
- ―Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark[src]
As Titanium Man attacked Stark Industries Headquarters, Stane got a call from Pepper Potts, who connected him to Tony Stark. Stark demanded to know what was going on, prompting Stane to reveal that he was doing business with A.I.M. As Stark started yelling, Stane said he had other matters to attend to and hung up. Stane then got another call, but sent it to voice mail.
Stane reveals his true intentions
Stane went to Tony Stark's Mansion and waited for Stark to arrive. Once he did, the two started arguing as Stane explained that Stark stopped working with him, so he had to take business else where. Stane also talked about the technological marvel that was the Iron Man Armor. Stark threatened to have Stane arrested, but the latter revealed he had Stark's first armor, but he needed a power source.
Stane incapacitates Tony Stark
He further explained that the Pentagon could do so much with an army of Iron Men, prompting Stark to argue what the opposition would do. Stane threw his hands in the air, simply saying how that was not his problem. He just put the weapons to market. Knowing the argument would lead nowhere, Stane said how Stark's life was a failure, but his death would be a gift, Stane then reached out with a taser and struck Stark, sending him to the ground. Later, the A.I.M. President started praising the new power source Stane gave them, which Stane did not listen to as he simply wanted the weapon they were creating.[1]
Death[]
Iron Monger lifts a car
- "You always do what you want, Tony. I'll do what I must."
- ―Iron Monger to Tony Stark[src]
As A.I.M. fell, Stane made the final push to complete his project: creating an armor for himself. Tony Stark called and the two argued, with Stane saying he had to do what he did to save the company.
Iron Monger shoots at Iron Man
Stark called it insanity, which Stane argued was actually creating these powerful weapons and locking them away. Stark noted it a waste of time, claiming he would not let Stane do this. Stane asked if Stark thought he had all of the cards, because in actuality he did not. He then revealed that he found Pepper Potts snooping and had her captured. Before ending the call, Stane said that he will do what he must.
Stane is killed
Stane was met by Iron Man at Stark Industries Headquarters, which he had locked down. The two then engaged in a fight. As they did so, Stane tried to get into Stark's head, saying how he was never the same after he left the Ten Rings Base. Stark eventually got close to Stane and ripped out some components in his suit, forcing Stane to fly away. Stane hid for a moment until he revealed himself above the giant Arc Reactor powering Stark Industries Headquarters. Just then, Potts overloaded the reactor, hitting Stane with a burst of energy, incapacitating him. Stane then fell into the arc reactor below, dying in a fiery explosion.[1]

- "Imagine what the Pentagon could do with an army of Iron Men."
"And imagine what the bad guys could do."
"Can't control that. You can only make the best product possible and bring it to market first." - ―Obadiah Stane and Tony Stark[src]
Stane was a very money-hungry businessman who cared about how much money he could make at expense of anyone involved. When arguing with Tony Stark, the latter brought up what the enemy could do with the Iron Man armor, to which Stane said that it was not his problem once it left his hands.
