"Come on. I never totally fit in with the gang, anyway."
The subject of this article is part of an MCU franchise story that has been officially deemed to be non-canonical to the primary continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its events instead occur in another reality within the Multiverse. This universe is designated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki as "Fortified Ten Rings Base".

"Tony never really came home, did he? His new direction for the company is costing us billions."
―Obadiah Stane[src]

Obadiah Stane was the COO of Stark Industries who supplied the Ten Rings with Stark Industries weapons. Stane would eventually don a suit of armor and use it to battle Stark Industries CEO, Tony Stark, as the Iron Monger.

Biography[]

Betraying Tony Stark[]

"Just make sure he doesn't get my 'gift' before I do."
―Obadiah Stane to Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar[src]

Obadiah Stane worked at Stark Industries and sold weapons to the Ten Rings on the side. Stane expressed surprise when Tony Stark returned from being kidnapped. He later received a call from one of Stark's kidnappers, Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, who claimed that someone was chasing him. Stane asked who was after him, so al-Wazar said it was a metal man and believed that Stark was behind it. Stane asked where they could rendezvous to retrieve what al-Wazar had for him, the Mark I Iron Man armor, so al-Wazar sent him coordinates. Stane met with al-Wazar and rendered him unconscious, taking the delivery for himself.[1]

Duel of Los Angeles[]

"What should we do about this?"
―Obadiah Stane to Pepper Potts[src]

Stane returned to Stark Industries Headquarters and found Pepper Potts, who had hacked into Stark Industries and discovered that Stane was the one responsible for selling weapons to the Ten Rings. He asked what they should do and offered her a drink, which Potts accepted. Stane complained about Stark costing the company money, but Potts assured him that Stark was having a hard time and would move on. Stane told Potts that Stark was lucky to have her and offered to walk her out.

Stane placed weapons across the streets of Los Angeles and Stark Industries Headquarters while he donned the Iron Man armor. Stark fought through all of the defenses and reached Stane, so Stane began throwing cars at Stark. However, Stark avoided the cars and blasted Stane enough time that his suit exploded.[1]

Legacy[]

"He would have killed me months ago if I hadn't created the Mark I suit."
Tony Stark[src]

Tony Stark realized that Stane had betrayed him and would have killed Stark long prior, writing it off as the result of power corrupting him. The battle also led Stark to dispose of the armor Stane used better.[1]

Personality[]

"Power corrupts, my friend."
Tony Stark about Obadiah Stane[src]

Stane once had a positive relationship with Tony Stark, but was business-oriented first. He saw the potential error of a large shift in the direction such as Stark Industries no longer producing weapons and put these concerns above his care for Stark. Stane was willing to kill Stark and take advantage of him to get better weapons to sell.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Iron Man Armor Capabilities: Although he had no innate powers, Stane had Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar bring him the metal armor which Tony Stark used to escape the Ten Rings Base. He donned the armor, granting him the ability to fight Stark.
    • Superhuman Strength: The armor allowed Stane to pick up several cars and throw them at Stark with threatening speed.
    • Superhuman Durability: The armor held its own against several blasts of energy from a more advanced Iron Man armor while Stane was using it.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Stane was able to throw several cars at Tony Stark without losing energy and continue fighting.
    • Flight: Stane was able to flight above the street and dodge attacks from Tony Stark.

Abilities[]

  • Expert Businessman: Stane was a very business-aware individual, putting what he believed to be Stark Industries' interest above all else. He was able to see that a large change in direction for the company would put it at risk and predict how much money they would lose.
  • Expert Tactician: Despite his frustration toward Stark, Stane was a sufficient strategist to understand that he needed Tony Stark alive so that he could get an Iron Man armor. He was able to put his feelings aside and not kill him despite having the chance.
