Obadiah Stane was the business partner of Tony Stark and former interim CEO of Stark Industries. Stane planned the kidnapping of Stark while he was on a trip to Afghanistan. Once Stark returned, Stane secretly recovered the armor that he had used to escape, and continued with his illicit dealings with criminal groups and the A.I.M. company, with whom attempted to develop a power source to weaponize the armors.
Stane personally ambushed Stark to get his power source and used it to power an armor for himself, but he was eventually defeated by Stark with the assistance of Pepper Potts.
Biography[]
Business Head[]
Tony Stark's Decision[]
- "Tony, this company makes weapons. It's your family legacy."
- ―Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark[src]
Tony Stark was kidnapped by the Ten Rings, but managed to break out. He returned home and decided that weapons development would be ended at Stark Industries. Stane met with Stark and Pepper Potts and asked if Stark was trying to ruin the company. However, Stark simply insisted that they would no longer sell weapons. Stark finished his work on J.A.R.V.I.S., but Stane continued to explain that it was a bad idea to stop selling weapons. However, Stark remained firm in his decision and walked away from the meeting as Stane shook his head.[1]
New Business Deals[]
Beginning Other Work[]
Stark Industries Headquarters was attacked, and Stane found Potts hiding in the conference room. Stark entered as Stane helped Stark to his feet, and Stane yelled at him for not being there when the building was attacked. Stane demanded that they bring in people to protect them, but Stark instead said they would simply destroy their inventory, upsetting Stane further. Stark noted that Stane was upset, but ordered him to do it anyway, walking away with Potts.
Stane got access to the armor stark used to escape the Ten Rings. A scientist contacted him asking about his claim to have something to work on. Stane admired the armor and told the scientist he would send it to the labs, ordering him to start work on it right away.[1]
Working with A.I.M.[]
- "Your company is under siege, so is mine. Groups like the Maggia are becoming a serious problem."
- ―Obadiah Stane to the A.I.M. President[src]
Stane contacted the A.I.M. President and noted that the Maggia was proving to be a serious problem for both their companies. The President asked about Tony Stark, but Stane simply said that he was ready to retire. The President eventually agreed to a merger, and they agreed that it was the right decision. Stane asked the person to keep it under wraps until they could work out the details. He explained that he had access to new technology and was curious to see what the other company's scientists could do with it, specifically the power source.
However, A.I.M. was unsuccessful at developing a prototype, angering Stane. Stane scolded the President, who explained that his engineers needed a more complete version. However, Stane refused to accept this and suggested that A.I.M. did not have a prototype. The President insisted that they did, but sending it to Stane was not that simple, but Stane simply ordered him to make it simple.[1]
Turning Against a Friend[]
- "Stark Industries is no better than they are. Your Iron Man suit is an incredible invention. Your Mona Lisa. And you're keeping it to yourself. Imagine what the Pentagon could do with an army of Iron Men."
- ―Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark[src]
A.I.M. ambushed Stark Industries Headquarters, and Stane attempted to contact Tony Stark. However, Stark ordered an evacuation of the facility. Stane contacted Stark through his armor as Stark fought A.I.M., and Stark thought Stane intended to blame Stark for the attack. However, Stane took responsibility for the attack, telling Stark that he should have given over the armor. Stane then disconnected the line and sent attempts to contact him to voicemail.
Stark found Stane in his workshop and demanded to know why he would work with A.I.M. Stane called Stark selfish and suggested that he should not be surprised. He insisted that Stark Industries was not better than A.I.M. and asked Stark to imagine what the Pentagon would be able to do if they had access to the Iron Man armor. Stark countered, telling Stane to imagine what their enemies could do, but Stane simply said he could not control that. Stark threatened to have Stane arrested, but Stane continued, revealing that he had recreated the initial Iron Man armor but could not find a power source. Stane used a taser on Stark, stole an Arc Reactor, and had Pepper Potts kidnapped. While Stark saved Potts, Stane fled using the Stark Industries Private Jet and did not leave a flight plan.[1]
Duel of Los Angeles[]
- "You always do what you want, Tony. I'll do what I must."
- ―Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark[src]
Stane sent to the Arc Reactor to A.I.M., who were impressed by the technology. On a call with the A.I.M. President, Stane asked for it to be mass produced, and the President agreed before Stane hung up. Stane then stood up and looked over Stark Industries Headquarters. Stane learned that Pepper Potts was investigating him and kidnapped her.
With the armor finished, he worked to program it while Stark called him. Stane refused to give up, claiming that he was working in Stark Industries' best interests. Stark claimed that his father would not have wanted it, but Stane told Stark that their conflict was beyond him. Stark called Stane insane, but Stane insisted that Stark was insane for thinking he could look away while people used his weapons. Stark said they were wasting time and refused to let Stane continue, so Stane revealed that he had Potts. Stark threatened Stane, but Stane said that he would do what he needed to and activated the Iron Monger Armor.
Stane caused damage on a Los Angeles highway as Stark arrived. Stane taunted Stark, saying that in trying to rid the world of weapons he created a large one, but Stark simply demanded to know Potts' location. Stane told Stark to focus on himself and began to throw cars at Stark, who fought back. Stane caught Stark in a grip, but Stark broke free as Stane congratulated Stark on destroying Stark Industries. Stark countered that he did not betray his father's legacy. Stane flew to Stark Industries Headquarters and warned that the Arc Reactor was unstable and could explode, which would kill Potts. They continued to fight, and Stark got Stane to stand over the Arc Reactor as it released a pulse, frying the suit and allowing Stark to defeat Stane.[1]
Personality[]
- "Insanity is thinking you could build these weapons and then look away when people use them."
- ―Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark[src]
Stane had a very short temper and is easily angered by those around him. Tony Stark's decision to end weapons production angered Stane enough to cause him to betray Stark and blame him for an attack on Stark Industries Headquarters. He then became angry with his new business partners when they were unable to recreate the power source for the Iron Man armor. He scolded the A.I.M. President and demanded faster results, leading A.I.M. to attack Stark. He was also a conniving businessman, brokering deals behind Stark's back and continuing to develop technology without consulting him.
