- "I'm going to make sure that this never happens again. Because... I am Iron Man."
- ―Iron Man[src]
Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark is the CEO of Stark Industries who got captured by the Ten Rings, forcing him to create a suit of armor to escape. As Iron Man, Stark took care of the terrorists and faced off against his old ally, Obadiah Stane.
Biography[]
Kidnapped[]
Escape[]
Tony Stark was kidnapped by the Ten Rings and brought to their encampment. He and a fellow prisoner, Ho Yinsen, began working on a suit of armor for Stark to wear to escape. Yinsen commented that it would be poetic for Stark to die surrounded by weapons, prompting Stark to tell him to be quiet. Stark continued work on the armor, placing down the completed faceplate. Stark and Yinsen made a fifty dollar bet that the armor would work.
The armor did work, and Stark declared that he had won their bet. Yinsen complimented Stark, who said they were leaving. Yinsen suggested it would not be easy, but Stark remained confident as Yinsen told him to try moving. Stark retrieved a power core, revealing that systems were operational. Stark then tested the flamethrower, using it to destroy several crates. Yinsen expressed concern about getting through the iron door, but Stark easily punched it down and began searching for an exit. He killed an insurgent who fired at him and praised the suit, promising to return for Yinsen once he found the exit.
Stark maneuvered the encampment, killing Ten Rings operatives along with way, until he came across a shield blocking his path. He found the field generators and destroyed them, allowing him to return to the main room. However, he heard a noise, leading him to ask Yinsen what was happening. Yinsen yelled that the Ten Rings were coming and for Stark to leave and wished him goodbye, despite Stark's insistence that he would return. Stark heard Yinsen get killed and screamed for him, but continued through the cave. Stark came across a drill which began to chase him. However, as he ran, he came across explosives and used his flamethrower to set them off, destroying the drill. He then successfully escaped, solemnly wishing goodbye to Yinsen.[2]
Return Home[]
Meeting with Obadiah Stane[]
- "You'll ruin the company!"
"Wrong! I'm going to save it! We're not selling weapons anymore. We're done." - ―Obadiah Stane and Tony Stark[src]
Stark returned to the United States and announced that he intended to end weapons production at his company, Stark Industries. Obadiah Stane pulled Stark aside and told Stark that the decision would ruin the company, but Stark insisted that he would save it. Stane asked Pepper Potts for support, but Potts simply said that Potts would not listen. Stark reminded Stane that he was in charge of the company and demanded that Stane get rid of their inventory.
He and Potts left together, and Potts asked what happened to him. Stark explained that he needed to do something in order to make up for things he had done for the things he had done in the past, but Potts did not understand. Stark explained that he needed to get rid of all of the weapons he designed. Potts insisted that there were too many for that to be possible, but Stark said that he could. He said that he would be away for some time and asked Potts to monitor Stane.[2]
Making a New Armor[]
Stark built a new armor with help from J.A.R.V.I.S. J.A.R.V.I.S. told Stark once the repulsors were activated, and Stark tested them. J.A.R.V.I.S. detected a weapons cache as Stark flew, but noted defenses that would prevent them from advancing. J.A.R.V.I.S. recommended that Stark disable the radar towers to take down surface-to-air defenses.[2]
Hunting the Maggia[]
Battle of Gulmira[]
- "Jarvis, did your thermal scan reveal any possible escape routes the enemy might take?"
"Yes, sir. There are two airfields in the vicinity."
"I'm gonna take out those control towers to make sure no planes can land there. I don't want those weapons to leave the area." - ―Iron Man and J.A.R.V.I.S.[src]
Stark found the weapons cache to be defended by tanks and helicopters, all of which he destroyed along with the radar towers. Stark received missiles from the towers, which he armed within his own armor for use in the fight. With all the radar towers destroyed, J.A.R.V.I.S. reported reduced activity from the defenses. He suggested that Stark take down the communications array, which he did. Once the array was destroyed, Stark asked J.A.R.V.I.S. if he had found any possible escape routes for his enemies to take. J.A.R.V.I.S. reported on the presence of two airfields, so Stark decided to destroy the control towers from both to prevent planes from landing there. Stark fought more defenses, using an electromagnetic pulse blast once J.A.R.V.I.S. reported it was ready, and destroyed both towers.
J.A.R.V.I.S. reported that there was no way for Stark's enemies to escape, so Stark suggested they target the weapons caches. However, J.A.R.V.I.S. suggested that Stark target the local power plants that powered the surface-to-air defenses, so Stark did so, destroying both, fighting off more enemy forces with a unibeam that came online. Stark then destroyed the weapons caches, although J.A.R.V.I.S. noted that significant amount of the expected weapons were missing.
Stark was then approached by a heavily armored vehicle using lots of Stark Industries weapons, which J.A.R.V.I.S. reported on, noting that its only weakness was its main weapon. Stark engaged with the weapon, destroying it along with the remainder of the Stark Industries weapons. Stark complimented his own efforts on the mission, and J.A.R.V.I.S. agreed.[2]
Liberation of the Maggia-Controlled Villages[]
Stark returned and worked on his Ford Flathead Roadster, where he asked Pepper Potts about Obadiah Stane. Potts replied negatively, saying that he simply retrieved his notes and left silently. Stark decided he would talk to Stane, and Potts revealed that the tank he destroyed was designed by the Maggia. Stark was upset by the revelation and asked about other news, so Potts explained that there was a holding facility for Stark Industries weapons in White Sands, New Mexico which was owned by the Maggia. She explained that the compound was protected by a security grid and that an informant could get him in, but that it would be difficult.
Stark left to meet with the informant, and J.A.R.V.I.S. reported that he was at a camp to the northwest of where Stark was. Stark went to the camp, fighting Maggia forces along the way. He found the informant, and J.A.R.V.I.S. connected them. Stark did not identify himself, but simply offered money in exchange for information about how to get past the defense grid. The informant agreed to give the passcode in exchange for the liberation of four villages in the surrounding area. Stark then agreed, asking the informant to have the information ready upon his return. Stark flew away and was met with more defenses, fighting and destroying all the weapons in each of the villages. J.A.R.V.I.S. informed Stark of their status, and Stark decided to return to the informant.[2]
Destruction of the Maggia White Sands Base[]
Stark then returned to the camp and contacted his informant, who said that he was impressed with Stark's work. Stark told the informant to be quiet and send him the code. J.A.R.V.I.S. reported that he received the code and they were ready to go to the base. Stark started by attacking the storage depots and fighting off the Maggia forces that defended the base, destroying all of them. However, J.A.R.V.I.S. reported on the delivery of several supply convoys leaving the base in opposite directions, frustrating Stark. Stark asked where they were going, so J.A.R.V.I.S. said there were multiple air bases in the area, so Stark decided to destroy the convoys. With help from J.A.R.V.I.S. navigating, Stark destroyed all three convoys and returned home.[2]
Attack on the Nefaria Compound[]
- "As you know, we've been monitoring the Nefaria family compound for some time now, but since yesterday there's been a 500% increase in activity."
"Something's up. This is too close to the Maggia's latest dealings to be a mere coincidence." - ―Pepper Potts to Tony Stark[src]
Stark learned from Pepper Potts that there had been an increase in activity at the Nefaria Compound, which Stark realized could not be a coincidence, saying that were was certainly Stark Industries weapons involved. Potts was worried for Stark, so he assured her that he would be careful as he donned his armor. J.A.R.V.I.S. located the compound, which Stark complimented him on. J.A.R.V.I.S. then advised that Stark defeat the ant-air defenses before landing, which Stark successfully did.
J.A.R.V.I.S. confirmed that all anti-air defenses had been destroyed, leading Stark to land and enter the compound. J.A.R.V.I.S. found people in the gallery area, so Stark began going in that direction. He was met by armed guards and defeated them, asking J.A.R.V.I.S. how they could pass the force fields. J.A.R.V.I.S. found four generators, which Stark destroyed, defeating the guards who attacked him. Stark then entered the gallery area, where J.A.R.V.I.S. reported incoming reinforcements and a lone heat signature in a control room. Stark guessed that the others escaped. Stark defeated the reinforcements and retrieved an encrypted data disc. Stark then realized that the lone operative had initiated a launch sequence that they would not be able to stop. Stark left the compound, and J.A.R.V.I.S. found six missile silos, allowing Stark to locate and destroy each of them while also fighting the Maggia's defenses. Stark then commented that it was too close.[2]
Destroying Maggia Projects[]
Destruction of the Flying Fortress[]
Stark returned home, where Pepper Potts said that she had updates. Stark asked if it was about Obadiah Stane, but Potts explained that she still did not know about Stane. Potts said that the encrypted disc Stark had taken from the Nefaria Compound had plans for a Flying Fortress which had been deployed. Stark said that he had to stop it from reaching the United States, so Potts asked him to be careful. As Stark flew to the fortress, J.A.R.V.I.S. warned him of an air-mine field. Stark simply expressed satisfaction that he was expected and avoided all of the mines.
Reaching the fortress, J.A.R.V.I.S. warned of ionic energy sources, making Stark nervous. J.A.R.V.I.S. recommended the destruction of the ion generators, which Stark did while fighting through the Maggia's defenses. J.A.R.V.I.S. reported that the canons were down, so Stark prepared to go to the command center. Stark fought several more guards and retrieved data from the fortress, granting J.A.R.V.I.S. access to the fortress' blueprints and the Maggia's tactical information. Stark told J.A.R.V.I.S. to analyze the blueprints for a weakness, so J.A.R.V.I.S. revealed that the ship was powered by engines protected by force fields. Stark destroyed the field generators creating the force fields, allowing to destroy the engines. This sent the fortress plummeting into the ocean. Stark then returned home to review the tactical information.[2]
Attack on the Controller's Research Facility[]
- "We'll have to find a way to disable those ships without sinking them."
- ―Iron Man[src]
Stark brought the tactical information to Pepper Potts, having her analyze it for him. Potts revealed that the fortress was one of three major operations. She explained that the next one was for a scientist named Controller in the Arctic, and that the third was on islands near Greece, promising more information in the future. She also revealed that the Maggia had an outside source in Obadiah Stane, upsetting Stark. Stark decided to deal with Controller and figure out Stane at another time.
Stark went to the Arctic, where J.A.R.V.I.S. scanned and learned that there were three destroyer class ships in the area, recommending that he take them out before moving forward. Stark asked for life signs on the ships, so J.A.R.V.I.S. confirmed that the ships were fully manned. Stark said that they would have to find a way to disable the ships without sinking them, suggesting they take out the command deck. Stark fought through the Maggia's defenses and destroyed the command decks on each ship. J.A.R.V.I.S. then warned of a heavily fortified battleship arriving, which Stark insisted would be easy. He began attacking bases with hopes of drawing out the Controller, leading him to leave on a small craft toward an oil rig.
Stark pursued the craft, which docked on the oil rig. J.A.R.V.I.S. told Stark that the rig was heavily fortified and had a flamethrower as a weapon. Stark said that the flamethrower on the oil rig could be disastrous. Stark then destroyed all the weapons, including the flamethrower. J.A.R.V.I.S. told Stark about local law enforcement arriving, so Stark said that they would leave the Controller to them.[2]
Destruction of the Microwave Projectors[]
When Stark returned home, Pepper Potts explained that the Maggia were attempting to combine repulsor technology with microwave energy, which Stark said sounded bad. Potts then explained that such a weapon would require a lot of energy to function and be difficult to move. However, Stark then finished her sentence, realizing that it was deployed in space. Potts connected the realization to a shuttle launch in the Maggia's files, which Stark said could indicate the weapon was operational. Potts began to note that the Maggia using repulsor technology meant that Obadiah Stane was still working with the Maggia, but Stark again brushed her off, saying that the he would have to confront Stane event as he had gone too far. Stark told Potts to keep things operational while he left to destroy the wepaon.
J.A.R.V.I.S. told Stark that he was detecting three large microwave projectors, noting that they were projected by a large shield grid. Stark said they should focus on the shields first, so J.A.R.V.I.S. noted that they would have to take down all six shield generators due to the redundancy of them. Fighting Maggia defenses, Stark took down all six, taking the shield grid offline. Stark then targeted the projectors, destroying them and taking the weapon offline. However, Stark wanted to make sure it was shut down for good, so J.A.R.V.I.S. scanned and found a military structure in a nearby mountain range. Suspecting it to be a command center, Stark flew towards it and fought the defenses. Stark blasted other doors open to access the generators and destroy them, opening the blast doors. Stark then went into the control room and destroyed it, which J.A.R.V.I.S. confirmed would stop them from ever using it again.[2]
Facing Obadiah Stane[]
Attack on Stark Industries Headquarters[]
As Stark returned home, and Pepper Potts told him that a group of tech suits like the Iron Man armor were attacking Stark Industries Headquarters. Obadiah Stane then interrupted and said he was taking back what was his. Stark called him crazy, demanding that Stane give up before it is too late. Stark tried to claim that his father would not have gone along with it, but Stane said that it was simply business, which Stark's father understood. Stark tried one last time to get him to stop, but Stane said that he felt he had to. Potts told Stark that Stane was almost there, so Stark rushed to her.
As Stark reached the headquarters, J.A.R.V.I.S. connected to the net sensors and warned of a large group of tech suits incoming. Stark resigned to stopping them before going after Stane. He fought the tech suits, but many of them suddenly withdrew from the fight. J.A.R.V.I.S. reported once the suits withdrew and were moving toward Research Lab Beta, so Stark again tried to appeal to Stane once more. Stark did not receive an answer, so he went and defeated the attacking research lab. J.A.R.V.I.S. then reported on a third wave moving toward the weapons testing facility, so Stark defended it. They then descended on the nitroglycerin storage tanks, and Stark realized that they could likely penetrate the tanks, rushing over to stop them. J.A.R.V.I.S. informed him when all the tech suits were destroyed.[2]
Duel of Los Angeles[]
- "I'm gonna take you down, Tony. You and your suit. You're trying to stop progress. It can't be done! You've built the greatest weapon ever seen. Who are you to keep it to yourself?"
"Just keep talking, Stane. Gives me more time to plan what I'm going to do to you." - ―Iron Monger and Iron Man[src]
J.A.R.V.I.S. told Stark that there was one more tech suit, which Stark realized would be Obadiah Stane. He rushed over to Stane, who proclaimed that he would defeat Stark and called him selfish for keeping the Iron Man armor to himself. Stark then taunted Stane, and the two began fighting. Stark blew up Stane's armor, and J.A.R.V.I.S. reported that he was dead. Stark became determined to continue to live as Iron Man and make sure that such a situation never happened again and flew over the city.[2]
Personality[]
Stark's experience being held hostage changed him and gave him a one-track mind, becoming determined to destroy all the weapons which Stark Industries built. He was willing to work toward this goal with or without the help of his peers, although he did accept help when it was offered by Pepper Potts. He was willing to do whatever it took to fix his mistake, even if retrieving information meant slight distractions, such as when his informant demanded that Stark liberate several villages before getting access to his actual target.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Iron Man Armor Capabilities: Stark built multiple armors which allowed him the ability to destroy his company's weapons around the world.
- Superhuman Durability: Stark's armor was very durable and was able to protect him from bullets and getting shot by tanks. It allowed him to survive the gravitational forces that come with the speed at which he can fly and blasts from armors similar to his.
