Stark works on the armor

Tony Stark was a weapons developer and CEO of Stark Industries. One day, he was kidnapped by the Ten Rings. In the scuffle, shrapnel was lodged into his chest. Once in captivity, his inmate, Ho Yinsen helped place an Arc Reactor in his chest to stop the shrapnel from reaching his heart.

The two eventually became close and Stark started realizing the faults in his ways of creating weapons and selling them blindly. The two also started developing a suit of armor to escape. While creating then mask, Stark became annoyed by Yinsen's monologue about how it was poetic that he would die among his own weapons that he created. Stark told Yinsen to give it a rest. He then raised the mask towards his face to admire the work.[2]

With the armor completed, Stark put it on while Ho Yinsen stayed in the Ten Rings Base to activated various controls in the suit. Stark walked out of the cave, amazed at how it worked, claiming Yinsen owed him money. He then found soldiers in front of him while Yinsen activated many controls like his missiles and targetting system. As Stark tried to pick up a tank, Yinsen warned him that his heart was working overtime and could give out. However, Stark was not worried as he wanted to right his wrongs and destroy all of the Ten Rings' Stark weapons as he felt responsible for them.

Iron Man vs Raza

Stark battles Raza Hamidmi Al-Wazar

Suddenly, Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar arrived. Stark engaged in a shootout and was able to blow up al-Wazar's tank. He then made his way back to the base only for Yinsen to tell him the soldiers were there. Yinsen reamrked at how there were weapons in the cave. He proceeded to blow himself and the cave up, much to the distress of Stark. Stark flew back fromthe explosion and got up, looking at the destruction. Although sad, he flew away and out of captivity.[2]

Shutting Down Weapons Selling[]

Legacies Change

Stark works on J.A.R.V.I.S.

"This company makes weapons. It is your family legacy."
"'Was'. Legacies change. People change. Maybe it's time for a new company."
Obadiah Stane and Tony Stark[src]

Upon returning home, Stark immediately decided to shut down the weapons progrm at Stark Industries due to having seen the destruction in Gulmira. This caused Obadiah Stane to angrily meet him in his garage. Stark ignored Stane to the best of his abilities as he finished creating J.A.R.V.I.S., an artificial intelligence. He then told Stane not to argue with J.A.R.V.I.S., frustrating Stane even more, who said it was Stark's family legacy. Stark told him that was a past tense phrase. Before leaving, he told Stane it was time for a new type of legacy.[2]

Hunting the Maggia[]

"Haven't you heard gorgeous? I'm the Invincible Iron Man."
―Iron Man to Pepper Potts[src]

Learning from Mickey of a base where Maggia suppliers give weapons, Stark had Pepper Potts try to find the location. However, Potts was unable to come up with anything as Luchino Nefaria kept his illegal deals in tight wraps. Luckily, Iron Man found the location and dropped in, only to be surrounded by guards telling Stark that trespassing would not be taken lightly. Stark agreed, but compared it to his feelings on second hand arms dealing. Iron Man then mowed through the guards, taking them out.

Interestingly, Iron Man found that the guard's armor was not his own. Potts confirmed, saying that the Maggia had built four new factories in the past year for these weapons. Wanting to get to the bottom of it, Iron Man told Potts to check A.I.M., S.H.I.E.L.D. or any other organizations they sell to that have acronyms. Stark then put a reminder for himself to cancel his dinner plans with Nefaria's daughter, Whitney. On the way, Stark was suddenly shot down by the Maggia, who had learned his location from an inside source.

As Iron Man charged back up, the pursuers told him that they were not the Maggia. Iron Man went to work once his power source was back to strength and taunted the men for using armor from two generations ago. Iron Man soon found himself dodging attacks as J.A.R.V.I.S. showed his power source percentage. Through J.A.R.V.I.S., Stark was able to realize that his Arc Reactor was tied to his heart, meaning he was more powerful than their makeshift technology. He then used this to siphon his power from them.

Now that the enemies found themselves in defenseless, powered-down suits, Stark told them that he would get them out if they explained who they were. However, Stark was interrupted when Potts notified him of energy spikes around the globe. She offered to get help from Jim Rhodes, but Iron Man told her that he was invincible and could do it on his own.[3]
