- "Power corrupts, my friend."
"What does that say about you?"
"Let's just say, the power of my friends corrupts me more..." - ―Tony Stark and Pepper Potts[src]
Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark is a billionaire and former weapons manufacturer who became the super hero known as Iron Man.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
- "But you've known each other your whole life...."
- ―James Rhodes to Tony Stark[src]
Tony Stark grew up developing a close relationship with Obadiah Stane. He graduated college at seventeen years old and became the CEO of Stark Industries. He became a billionaire and used the company to produce weapons and dated several supermodels.[2]
Kidnapped[]
Stark was attacked by the Ten Rings, using weapons produced by Stark Industries. He built a metal armor and used it to escape, surprising everyone at home. Stark then decided to end weapons production in the company.[2]
Operating as Iron Man[]
Attack on the Ten Rings Base[]
Stark built a new armor, at one point flying a test armor into the mesosphere, and asked J.A.R.V.I.S. for help figuring out how the Ten Rings got access to Stark Industries weapons. J.A.R.V.I.S. asked how to rectify the situation, so Stark asked J.A.R.V.I.S. to pilot them to where James Rhodes found them.
Stark arrived in Afghanistan and began flying toward the Ten Rings' base and fought through their defenses, continually flying and firing back. He flew over several walls and destroyed multiple turrets and laser canons. The Ten Rings began attacking with tanks, but Stark destroyed them as well. Stark was then approached by a much larger tank, which he also destroyed. The Ten Rings took control of the area using Stark Industries weapons, which J.A.R.V.I.S. told him about. Stark sarcastically thanked J.A.R.V.I.S. for the information. J.A.R.V.I.S. asked if Stark was more focused on revenge, which Stark denied.[2]
Attack on the Ten Rings Helicopter[]
Stark went to a tundra area and began fighting the Ten Rings defenses there, which were joined by helicopters. Stark came across a larger helicopter and defeated it. Stark then learned that the Ten Rings were being provided weapons by someone inside Stark Industries.[2]
Asking for Help[]
Stark called Pepper Potts and asked if she was there, then asked how she had spent her birthday the night before. Potts said that she spent it working, prompting Stark to encourage her to spend time dating. Potts explained that the only men she regularly interacted with her Stark, Obadiah Stane, and Happy Hogan, so Stark suggested that she and Hogan would make a good couple. Stark asked Potts to hack into Stark Industries and find out who within the company was selling weapons to the Ten Rings. Potts commented that she does strange things for him, so Stark teased her, saying to do it for Hogan rather than for Stark.[2]
Chase of Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar[]
Stark began chasing Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, and J.A.R.V.I.S. told Stark that the Ten Rings were retreating north. Stark then insisted on following them north. Stark began flying over islands in pursuing the Ten Rings and destroyed their naval weapons. He came across a large plane, which he destroyed. J.A.R.V.I.S. then accessed Interpol's database and discovered that al-Wazar, Stark's target, was found unconscious in his hideout. Stark asked if he was dead, but J.A.R.V.I.S. said it was unclear. J.A.R.V.I.S. said that al-Wazar was bleeding from his ear, leading Stark to realize that Stane attacked al-Wazar with the Sonic Taser and was responsible for selling weapons to the Ten Rings.
Stark tried to warn Pepper Potts, but did not receive an answer. He told J.A.R.V.I.S. to call James Rhodes. Rhodes demanded to know what happened and explained that NATO was searching for Stark. Stark promised to explain, but revealed that Potts was likely in danger at Stark Industries Headquarters. Rhodes agreed to help, but demanded a strong explanation and a suit of his own to use.[2]
Duel of Los Angeles[]
Stark went to Los Angeles, where he discovered that Obadiah Stane had weapons lined up on the streets. Tanks and turrets fired at Stark, who destroyed all the weapons. Stark made his way to the street, where he was attacked from the air by helicopters dropping explosives. Stark destroyed the helicopters and the explosives that were in danger of detonating if he got close enough, but then got attacked by planes which he also destroyed. He returned to Stark Industries headquarters and defeated more weapons before returning the street, where he found increased defenses and large craters in the ground. Stark came across Stane, now wearing the armor Stark used to escape the Ten Rings, who threw cars at Stark. Stark avoided the cars and blasted Stane, eventually causing his suit to explode, killing Stane.
Stark told James Rhodes what happened and realized that Stane would have killed Stark months prior had he not built the armor. Rhodes expressed surprise, but Stark simply explained that power tended to corrupt people. Potts asked what that meant for Stark, but Stark said that the power of his friendships corrupt him more. J.A.R.V.I.S. recommended that Stark do a better job of disposing of the original armor, to which Stark agreed before flying away.[2]
Personality[]
- "May I ask, sir, if this mission carries an ulterior motive of revenge?"
"What, do I look like some kind of comic book character to you?" - ―J.A.R.V.I.S. and Tony Stark[src]
Stark was primarily driven by the anger he felt toward the Ten Rings for his kidnapping, although he denied it. He became obsessed with identifying the Ten Rings' source of Stark Industries weapons, focused solely on that while the company lost money due to his announcement that he would stop selling weapons. He was loyal to his friends and viewed them as being able to save him from being corrupted by his power.
