- "Iron Man's not enough. Not even with a War Machine watching his back. For what's coming, we're gonna need an Iron Legion."
- ―Tony Stark to James Rhodes[src]
The Iron Legion is a group of remote-controlled Iron Man armors, ranging from Marks VIII to XLI, that serve as Iron Man's main combat support team, when desperate times calls for desperate measures in battle. The Iron Legion is used to guard civilians when the Avengers are fighting dangerous battles in places like towns and cities.
History

The Battle of New York caused Tony Stark to realize that Iron Man might not be enough to defend the Earth from the next threat that could come from beyond Earth, not even with the help that War Machine could give him. So he decided to make several new Iron Man armors that could be remotely controlled and help him in any future battles. He named them the Iron Legion.[1]
Taking the battle to Aldrich Killian and his Extremis soldiers on the freighter Norco, Stark ordered J.A.R.V.I.S. to activate the Iron Legion hidden below his destroyed mansion and engage all hostile forces. During the battle, the Iron Legion sustained a few losses, but victory ultimately came to Iron Man's side. The remaining armors were all destroyed by Stark's "Clean slate" self-destruct protocol.[2]
After the Avengers became independent from S.H.I.E.L.D., Stark reinvented an Iron Legion consisting of new unwearable suits inspired by the Iron Man suits and controlled by J.A.R.V.I.S. When Stark wanted to build an iron suit around the world, he created a new software, Ultron. Ultron used his abilites to take control over Stark's tools to build himself a body. In the process, he also took control of the Iron Legion and used it against the Avengers.[3]
