"He is no longer Bruce Banner or The Hulk. He's a cypher. He's now an anchor, protecting energies that could make or destroy worlds."
Doctor David Bruce Banner, M.D., Ph.D., is a scientist and a founding member of the Avengers whose experiments with gamma radiation caused his body and brain to transform into a huge, rage-fueled, primitive-minded creature known as the Hulk when angered or provoked. While Hulk was in outer space, the Bifrost Bridge transported him to the New York Sanctum, after which he shifted back to Banner and was rescued from zombies by the Zombie Outbreak Survivor Group. With Hulk unwilling to transform, Banner worked with the group to find a solution to the Zombie Apocalypse. Later, when the few survivors of the team were trying to escape Camp Lehigh with a Quadjet, Banner decided to stay behind and turned into Hulk to fight a zombie horde and an undead Wanda Maximoff.
Obtaining clothes from the New York Sanctum, Banner went outside to find the streets of New York City deserted. His confusion was short-lived with the arrival of Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian. Banner tried to summon Hulk, but found that Hulk refused to emerge. Maw began to proclaim Banner's eventual death, but he and Obsidian were soon ambushed by Doctor Strange, Wong, and Tony Stark. Banner was initially relieved at the three's arrival, but he was soon horrified to see them murdering Maw and Obsidian.
The dust settled to reveal that Strange, Wong, and Stark were zombies, and they had transformed Maw and Obsidian into zombies, too. As Stark prepared to blast Banner, the Cloak of Levitation arrived and tripped him up. Banner tried to run away, but was cornered by Wong. However, the Cloak intervened again, pulling Wong away, and severing his head via the portal. Banner then got restrained by Maw and was about to get devoured, but was saved by a swarm of ants, commanded by Wasp, who decapitated Stark and had a giant ant eat his head, much to Banner's disgust.
Wasp ordered Banner to flee with her ants, and when he asked her who she was, she responded by saying that she was among all that was left. Just then, Spider-Man swung over and grabbed Banner. As Banner begged the young superhero not to eat him, Spider-Man tried to reassure him as they swung over to the resistance's base.[2]
Back in their base, Peter Parker showed Banner his So You Wanna Survive the Zombie Apocalypse orientation video, but they were interrupted by Okoye. She introduced herself to Banner, who remarked that she had picked an interesting time to visit America, but she explained that with her king's absence, she had to intervene. She also explained that the team had received a beacon over the wires.[2]
After traveling to Camp Lehigh, Banner, Okoye, Peter Parker, Bucky Barnes, and Kurt Goreshter were met by Vision and Scott Lang. Exploring the facility, Banner discovered they weren't the first visitors to come to Camp Lehigh and Vision expressed his distress in wishing they hadn't come to which Banner responded by asking what the camp was, only to find out from T'Challa what Vision was doing.
Banner learning the truth
Vision explained to Banner and the other that due to Wanda Maximoff being zombified and rejecting the Mind Stone treatment he had been keeping her there because he couldn't bear the thought of killing her. Right after this discovery, Maximoff revealed herself to have been free due to Barnes having shot her cell and her using magic to open it. She then proceeded to eat Goreshter alive.[2]
Banner convinced Vision to help them leave, and the latter blasted the roof open to help them escape. However, Okoye was telekinetically stopped by the zombified Wanda Maximoff and was zombified. Bucky Barnes then used his time to buy Banner and the others some time, telling them to run as he attempted to shoot Maximoff. Maximoff simply used her powers to throw Barnes away and went after Banner, attempting to infect him via a bite to his arm. However, Hulk briefly emerged, hardening his arm and saving Banner.
Banner, seeing that they clearly wouldn't be able to escape without a fight, gave Peter Parker the Mind Stone before running over to the zombies. Banner then ran straight into the horde, forcing Hulk to completely come out and engage Maximoff in battle, buying Parker, Scott Lang, and T'Challa enough time to escape.[2]
Hulk eventually managed to get away from Wanda and turns back into Banner. Sometime after the events that took place in Wakanda (where T'Challa's sacrifice to kill Thanos ended-up with the destruction of the Infinity Gauntlet), the gamma energy that the Infinity Stones started to destroy the Earth, until Banner (with Protections Spells from the Masters of the Mystic Arts) walked into the energy, compresing so much energy that he acquired a new form, becoming an anchor tying the stones.[4]
During the next five years, Wanda Maximoff became self-aware, controlling a horde of infected ones to get Banner's new powers and rewrite the world to her like. However, Infinity Hulk just was too powerful, never letting her even touch him.[citation needed]
Wanda Maximoff finally was able to amass enough troops and powerful enemies, like the zombified Thor to tire Banner's energies. Despite the efforts of Masters of the Mystic Arts, Spider-Man, Scott Lang, Shang-Chi, Katy Chen, Valkyrie, Blade Knight and Kamala Khan, Banner was took off-guard by Maximoff, touched and quickly drained. Kamala Khan tried to stop Wanda, but when this one offered her joining powers to "reset the world", Khan accepted due the pressure of seeing her friends (including Banner) dying. Both women used the Infinity Hulk's powers to apparently reality-shift the world. Bruce Banner / Hulk's status after that is unknown.[citation needed]
