"The Index?"
"It's a list S.H.I.E.L.D. keeps of people and objects with powers."
"Wait. What? How many are there?"
Skye and Jemma Simmons[src]

The Index is a relatively short list of people and objects with super-powers kept by S.H.I.E.L.D.

When a person with a power or ability is discovered, a team is sent out to file an "Index Asset Evaluation and Intake" report.[1] It is followed by a full psychological evaluation and threat assessment.[2]

People on The Index are often assigned a case-worker and generally advised to keep their abilities private. Agent Kwan Chen was the supervisor of Chan Ho Yin;[3] Director Phil Coulson chose himself as Skye's supervisor.[2]

Some individuals on the Index are deemed too dangerous and are killed, and referred to as being "crossed off".[4]

Index

"Sir, these people are on the Index, but they are not exactly gifted."
"They were considered highly dangerous, larger part of the Index functions as more of a watch-list."
Bobbi Morse and Phil Coulson[src]
