- "We appreciate your concern, Stephen, but it's not the Scarlet Witch that we fear. From our experience, the greatest danger to the Multiverse, it turns out... is Doctor Strange."
- ―Mister Fantastic to Doctor Strange[src]
The "Illuminati Assembled" Universe, designated as Earth-838 by the Baxter Foundation and also known as Universe-838,[1] is a parallel reality where the Illuminati, a group of powerful heroes that formed to deal with otherwise impossible threats, had created a seemingly utopical society.
History[]
Protected by the Avengers[]
Origins[]
- "Captain Carter: The first Avenger."
- ―Baron Mordo to Doctor Strange[src]
Project Rebirth was a government program which resulted in Peggy Carter being given the Super Soldier Serum. As a result of the serum, Carter gained superhuman strength and peak physical condition. Carter went on to lead the Avengers, a team formed with the goal of protecting the Earth of any kind of threat.[1] Other members of the team included Iron Man and Scarlet Witch.[2]
Ultron Program[]
In 2015, Tony Stark created the Ultron Sentries to protect the world from all kinds of threats. The program was successful, allowing the Avengers to disband and retire.[2] Wanda Maximoff relocated to Westview, New Jersey, where she had two children.[3]
Protected by the Illuminati[]
Origins[]
- "The Illuminati will see you now."
- ―Baron Mordo to Doctor Strange[src]
Stephen Strange got into a car accident and trained to become a Master of the Mystic Arts. Strange was later awarded the titles of Sorcerer Supreme and Master of the New York Sanctum. Years later in 2015, Strange formed the Illuminati, a group willing to make difficult choices to protect the world. The group included Professor X, a Mutant with telepathic abilities; Mister Fantastic, the leader of the Fantastic Four; Captain Carter, the First Avenger; Captain Marvel, a powerful cosmic being; and Black Bolt, the Inhuman King of Attilan.[3]
Infinity War[]
- "While the rest of us banded together to try to stop Thanos, Stephen, as always, chose to go it alone."
"He turned to the Darkhold. Began dreamwalking. In hopes that our salvation might lie in the Multiverse."
"And guess what? It didn't. But he kept doing it anyway." - ―Professor X, Baron Mordo and Captain Marvel[src]
The Titan warlord Thanos started a campaign of his own to retrieve the Infinity Stones so he could put them into his Infinity Gauntlet and eradicate half of all life in the galaxy so he could bring balance and order to the universe. To stop him, the Illuminati banded together, but Strange arrogantly tried to find a way in the Darkhold to defeat Thanos by dreamwalking. However, Strange's decision ended up causing an incursion between the Illuminati Assembled universe and another, resulting in the other being destroyed.
Despite that, the rest of the Illuminati found the Book of Vishanti and used it to defeat Thanos. However, at Titan, Strange confessed to the group that he had destroyed a universe, having renounced the Darkhold. In response, Strange was willingly executed by Black Bolt, who was instructed by the rest of the Illuminati to do so. The Illuminati were saddened to have to kill their friend, but they knew that it was for the greater good. They established a Strange Museum in honor of their friend and kept the truth surrounding the circumstances of his death a secret. They recruited Christine Palmer to their cause.[3]
Scarlet Witch's Multiversal Madness[]
Visited by Doctor Strange and America Chavez[]
- "They go on red?"
"Rule number one of Multiversal travel? You don't know anything." - ―Doctor Strange and America Chavez[src]
Hoping to escape the Scarlet Witch, America Chavez opened an Inter-Dimensional Portal and used it flee from Doctor Strange's universe, landing in the Illuminati Assembled universe alongside Strange. Chavez was unable to control her powers, so they decided to find the native Strange and ask for help. Strange learned that traffic lights in the Illuminati Assembled universe indicated for cars to move on red, and they stole food from Pizza Poppa. They reached the New York Sanctum and came across Baron Mordo, which concerned Strange as the version of him from Strange's universe had tried to kill Strange. Strange and Chavez told Mordo about the threat posed by Strange's universe's Scarlet Witch, and Mordo explained that Scarlet Witch could reach the Illuminati Assembled universe by dreamwalking. Mordo then poisoned Strange and Chavez so they could be brought to the Illuminati and held.
Meanwhile, the native Wanda Maximoff tried to get her children to bed, when the Maximoff from Strange's universe dreamwalked into her body. The alternate Maximoff got emotional watching her children ask for ice cream, when the native Maximoff regained control.[3]
Battle at the Illuminati Headquarters[]
- "Do you seriously think I'm a bigger threat than the Scarlet Witch?"
"Oh, we can handle your little witch if she decides to dreamwalk."
"No. No, you cannot, not unless you give me the Book of Vishanti." - ―Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel[src]
Stephen Strange and America Chavez woke up in Illuminati Headquarters, where they discovered that Christine Palmer was experimenting on them due to them being from a different universe. Strange tried to convince Palmer that people were in danger, but was interrupted as Karl Mordo arrived with a group of Ultron Sentries. Strange was taken to a trial in front of the Illuminati, who were each introduced to Strange. They explained the role created by the Illuminati, and Strange tried to convince the Illuminati that his universe's Wanda Maximoff was the bigger threat, although the Illuminati were confident they could handle her.
As Maximoff regained control of the native version of her and went toward Illuminati Headquarters, the Illuminati told Strange the truth surrounding how the native Strange died. The Illuminati remained convinced that every version of Strange was capable of doing what their own did, when Maximoff arrived at Illuminati Headquarters. The Illuminati went to handle Maximoff, but Charles Xavier stayed to tell Strange to get to the Book of Vishanti.
The Illuminati then confronted Maximoff, who easily killed each of her attackers. Strange tried to convince Mordo to take him to the Book of Vishanti, but Mordo refused and attacked Strange, leading the two to duel. Maximoff approached Chavez to kill her while Palmer struggled to break Chavez out of her holding cell. Xavier tried to telepathically free the native Maximoff, but the attacking Maximoff killed Xavier. Strange and Chavez convinced Palmer to take them to the Book of Vishanti. They reached the Gap Junction and went to retrieve the book, leaving the Illuminati Assembled universe. While in the Gap Junction, Maximoff left her alternate self's body, and the native Maximoff rushed back to her children.[3]
Consoling Her Alternate Self[]
- "Know that they'll be loved."
- ―Wanda Maximoff to Scarlet Witch[src]
The following day, America Chavez opened another Inter-Dimensional Portal into the Illuminati Assembled universe. Wanda Maximoff choked Chavez and dragged her into the universe, where Billy and Tommy Maximoff saw and called for their own mother. The alternate Wanda claimed to be Billy and Tommy's mother, but the native Wanda prepared to fight her alternate self to protect her children. The boys began to throw their toys at the alternate version of their mother, angering Wanda. She then tried to treat the boys with affection, but saw that they were scared of her. The alternate Wanda realized how terrible what she had done was and got emotional, kneeling. The native Wanda consoled her alternate self and assured her that her children would be loved. Chavez then closed the portal, sending herself and the alternate Wanda back to Wanda's universe.
Christine Palmer was later returned to the Illuminati Assembled universe.[3]

Trivia[]
- In this universe, traffic lights work the opposite way: you cross with the red light and stay with the green light. Additionally, pizza takes the form of balls rather than triangular slices.
- According to Elizabeth Olsen, she believes that Wanda Maximoff is not married to Vision in the Illuminati Assembled universe because they divorced and separated, rather than Vision having died.[4]
Behind the Scenes[]
- There was discussion about including a version of Namor native to the Illuminati Assembled universe as a part of the Illuminati. However, Namor was not included due to his planned appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.[5] In addition, Waldron's first draft for the film included an Earth-838 version of the Wasp as a member of the Illuminati,[6] while Soren Bendt Aaboe Pedersen's storyboards suggest that an Earth-838 version of Iron Monger was likewise considered for the Illuminati's lineup.[7]
- An early draft of the script for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had an Earth-838 version of the Baxter Building with Mister Fantastic in it in a post-credits scene.[8]
- Although the Tony Stark of the Illuminati Assembled universe never appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, his achievements were detailed in an interview with producer Richie Palmer.[2]
