"You started in S.H.I.E.L.D. young, like me, dropped out for a while when your wife passed, but then came back with a vengeance, rose to command the Iliad three years later."
Phil Coulson to Robert Gonzales[src]

The Iliad was an aircraft carrier owned and operated by S.H.I.E.L.D. After the HYDRA Uprising, it served as the mobile headquarters of Robert Gonzales' S.H.I.E.L.D. faction.

"We're carrying a cargo that we can't let HYDRA get their hands on."
Robert Gonzales[src]

During the HYDRA Uprising, S.H.I.E.L.D. suffered heavy casualties at the hands of HYDRA, losing many bases and most of its equipment to the reborn terrorist organization. HYDRA's moles on the Iliad attempted to take possession of the ship and its cargo[2] , but the loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agents managed to defeat them all. Agent Bobbi Morse was able to save the chief engineer of Iliad, Alphonso Mackenzie and his surviving crew. During the battle, Agent Robert Gonzales was almost killed but he was saved by Agent Isabelle Hartley.

The remaining S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on the Iliad continued to operate the ship, which eventually became the mobile headquarters of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s remnants led by Robert Gonzales.[3]

The Real S.H.I.E.L.D.

Gonzales then sent Hartley, Morse, and Mackenzie to gather intel on S.H.I.E.L.D. remnants led by Phil Coulson.[3] However, when their plan was discovered by agent Lance Hunter, Mackenzie brought him aboard the Iliad.[4] There, Hunter was brought before Gonzales and a board of his advisers. They offered Hunter a chance to join them, but refused to side against Coulson. Hunter then escaped using one of the ship's submersibles.[3]
