"Flame on!"
―Human Torch[src]

Jonathan Lowell Spencer "Johnny" Storm was a member of the Fantastic Four known as Human Torch. He was pruned by the Time Variance Authority and sent to the Void, where he joined the Resistance opposing Cassandra Nova and her henchmen. Human Torch was captured along with Deadpool and Wolverine by a group of Nova's scavengers led by Pyro, who stripped Storm of his powers. When Deadpool openly mentioned Storm's vulgar comments about her, Nova brutally killed him.

Biography[]

This is an in-depth biography of Human Torch/Void-Analyzing Fantastic Four within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For an abridged overview of the character's full story, see Marvel Database's article on the same character.

Early Life[]

The Fantastic Four[]

Following a mission in space, Johnny Storm gained the power to manipulate and transform his body into fire, which granted him the ability to fly. Along with three others who also possessed unique powers, including Reed Richards, they formed a superhero team known as the Fantastic Four, with Storm going by the codename "Human Torch."[2]

Banished to the Void[]

Encounter with the TVA[]

"You're in the Void. Think of it as purgatory. Reed called it a metaphysical junkyard where anything useless goes before it gets annihilated forever. And where the TVA sends people that don't play nice with the rest of the Multiverse."
"Like you?"
―Human Torch and Wolverine[src]

At some point, Human Torch had a run in with the Multiverse which resulted in him being taken by the Time Variance Authority, who pruned him, sending him to the Void, a place that Mister Fantastic had researched and expressed thoughts on. Human Torch was able to avoid being eaten by Alioth, but others he was with were not so fortunate.[2]

Joining the Resistance[]

"Everyone here's on the run from Alioth. Most don't make it. There's a Resistance though. Other people like us that managed to survive. They're hiding out in the borderlands trying to find a way the fuck out of here."
―Human Torch to Deadpool and Wolverine[src]

Human Torch came across a group of other heroes who had survived in the Void from Alioth. However, the wasteland was ruled by the mutant Cassandra Nova, who forced those trapped in the Void to work for her. This group of heroes, including Elektra, Blade, Gambit, and X-23, rebelled against Nova and formed a Resistance, hiding out in the borderlands and trying to figure a way out of the Void. The Resistance spent years in hiding, and any attempt they made to fight Nova only ended in defeat.[2]

Meeting Deadpool and Wolverine[]

Human Torch calls Deadpool and Wolverine

"She might have something to say about that."
"Who's 'she'?"
"In the Void, you're either food for Alioth or you work for her."
―Human Torch and Wolverine[src]

Human Torch went out on a scout mission, during which he came across Deadpool and Wolverine, who were in the middle of fighting each other. Human Torch broke it up by telling them that fighting each other meant that they would lose and warned them that Cassandra Nova's crew were approaching their location. Jumping to the ground, Human Torch revealed himself, which excited Deadpool.

Human Torch prepares to fight against Pyro

As they became surrounded by a convoy of Nova's henchmen led by Pyro, Human Torch confidently told Deadpool and Wolverine that he would handle the situation. Deadpool hugged Human Torch from the back, who broke free from him as Pyro told them there was nowhere to run. Human Torch responded that he wasn't running and warned Pyro of what was about to come. Human Torch then shouted his catchphrase and ignited into flames.

Human Torch is depowered

Human Torch's fire is extinguished by Pyro

Soaring into the sky above everyone, Human Torch blasted a beam of fire directly at Pyro. However, also having fire-based powers, Pyro was able to stop Human Torch's attack with ease and extinguish all of his fire. Rendered powerless, Human Torch plummeted from the sky, hitting a nearby structure on the way down before crashing onto the ground, knocking him unconscious. Human Torch was tied up and thrown in a cage alongside Deadpool and Wolverine, who were also defeated by the henchmen.

Johnny Storm discusses the Void

Human Torch talks about Cassandra Nova

As they were taken to Nova's lair, Human Torch explained the Void, using Mister Fantastic's explanation to do so. He informed them about Alioth and the Resistance; Wolverine thought the Resistance could help them get back to the TVA, but Human Torch laughed at the idea, stating that whoever didn't get eaten by Alioth worked for Nova. Human Torch then spent the remainder of the trip expressing his hatred for Nova in extremely vulgar language, which he said he could be quoted on.[2]

Death[]

Johnny Storm and Cassandra Nova

"I have never said any of those words in my entire life."
"Ha! The modesty. People think I'm a shit-talker, but this guy... next level."
―Human Torch and Deadpool to Cassandra Nova[src]

Arriving at the compound, Human Torch, Deadpool and Wolverine were let out of the cage and brought before Cassandra Nova, who remarked on how she had spent years trying to capture Human Torch.

Johnny Storm death

Human Torch is killed by Cassandra Nova

Deadpool interrupted, revealing to Nova what Human Torch had told them about her, although Human Torch tried to get Deadpool to stop talking at the risk of getting him killed. However, Deadpool continued and repeated exactly what Human Torch said to them verbatim. Human Torch attempted to deny it all, but Deadpool insisted on crediting Human Torch for his words. In a panic, Human Torch still desperately tried to deny insulting Nova, but she coldly used her powers to remove his skin in an instant, killing him.[2]

Legacy[]

"I'm tired of these absolutely vile rumors that I got Johnny killed. Let's take a look at the tape."
Deadpool[src]

Deadpool and Wolverine were able to escape from Cassandra Nova's compound when Alioth arrived, and they later were brought to the Hero Hideout by the Resistance. Deadpool rallied the group to launch an attack on Nova's compound in the hopes of using Nova to finally escape the Void, citing Human Torch's death as a reason. The Resistance was saddened to hear that Human Torch had been murdered, but Wolverine accused Deadpool of getting him killed, which the latter denied.

The attack was successful, allowing Deadpool and Wolverine to return to the former's universe in time to stop Nova from using the Time Ripper to destroy all universes but the Void. Returning to the Time Variance Authority Office, Deadpool retrieved and played a tape taken from a hidden camera that was located in his cage. The tape showed Human Torch insulting and demeaning Nova using incredibly crude language, proving that he said the things Deadpool accused him of.[2]

Personality[]

This section needs a rewrite
"Cassandra Nova. A megalomaniacal, psychotic asshole. A finger-licking, dead inside pixie slab of third-rate dime store nut milk. And I'll tell you what she can do."
"I'm listening."
"She can lick my god damn cinnamon ring clean and kick rocks all the way to bald hell. In fact, I don't give a shit if she removes all my skin and pops me like some nightmarish blood balloon. If the last thing I do in this godforsaken, cum-gutter existence is light that fuck-box on fire, I still won't die happy!"
―Johnny Storm and Deadpool[src]

Johnny, much like the Captain America he was mistaken for, was heroic and leaderlike, quickly stopping Deadpool and Wolverine's fighting to remind them that they only had each other in the Void. He refused to work for the psychotic Cassandra Nova, becoming a member of the freedom-fighting Resistance instead. But he was also sharp-tongued and abrasive, especially about Nova who he had harbored a deep hatred for, using extensive vulgar vocabulary to describe her and his wishes to kill her. Storm was so vulgar and offensive that even Deadpool, who often makes rude remarks, was surprised. Johnny's running his mouth was ultimately his undoing, as Cassandra Nova swiftly killed him after Deadpool repeated the obscenities he had used about her.

Powers[]

  • Fire Manipulation:

Human Torch sets himself on fire

Human Torch had the power to manipulate fire, which formed around his body when he used his abilities. He could channel this fire in the form of blasts and beams.
    • Flight: Human Torch could use this force to fly, which he did when battling Pyro. However, Pyro's own ability to manipulate fire negated Human Torch's abilities.
  • Superhuman Durability: Storm's superhuman nature granted him the ability to greatly withstand attacks and falls, as he fell from the sky in the Void, landed on his groin on a railing, and proceeded to hit the ground headfirst, but with no visible injuries.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, Johnny Storm is a member of the Fantastic Four and brother of Sue Storm with the ability to generate fire throughout his body.
  • In 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four duology, Johnny Storm is the hot-headed brother of Sue Storm who joined her, Reed Richards and Ben Grimm on a mission to space. However, they were hit by cosmic radiation, giving them all powers including Johnny's fire manipulation. Human Torch and the Fantastic Four soon fought an old friend, Victor von Doom and defeated him. Later on, the Fantastic Four also fought Silver Surfer, who made contact with Johnny, allowing Johnny to take the powers of others on contact. With the combined powers of the Fantastic Four, Johnny was able to defeat Doom again, who had taken Silver Surfer's board.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Human Torch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues the live-action incarnation of the character from 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four duology, who was also portrayed by Chris Evans; he is the second live-action incarnation of the character, following an incarnation portrayed by Jay Underwood.
    • Evans agreed to reprise his role following a text from Ryan Reynolds asking if he'd be willing to. Evans later told Entertainment Weekly that Reynolds may be the only person he would be willing to reprise the role of Human Torch for.[4]
  • The Fantastic Four duology's Human Torch appearing in a Deadpool film with Chris Evans reprising the role was previously considered for Deadpool 2, as writer Paul Wernick revealed that they considered have Evans' Human Torch audition for the X-Force interviews, but that discussions on the idea did not go as far as to contact Evans.[5]
  • The post-credits scene in which Storm speaks in a vulgar manner about Cassandra Nova was, according to co-writer Ryan Reynolds, written primarily to get Chris Evans to agree to appear in the movie. However, Reynolds was proud of how funny the scene turned out to be and Evans only agreed to do the film if the scene stayed in the final cut.[6]
