"I'm the only thing that can stop it."
―Bruce Banner[src]

Dr. David Bruce Banner, PhD was a scientist who, in an experiment, accidentally became overdosed with Gamma Radiation and transformed into the monstrous Hulk.

Biography[]

Project Gamma Pulse[]

Becoming Hulk[]

Bruce Banner was recruited as a scientist for the United States military alongside Betty Ross at Culver University. During the experiment, Banner injected himself with Gamma Radiation, but something went wrong, turning Banner into a large green monster driven by rage known as Hulk, who nearly killed Ross.Hulk left the facility and caused a panic, lifting up a taxi as people ran away from him. Banner went into hiding as the military pursued him and vowed to remaining in hiding until he would be able to cure the Hulk.[2]

Hunted by the Military[]

Morning Run[]

Five years into his time hiding, Banner ended up in Porto Verde, Brazil. One morning, while on a run, he checked his pulse monitor and was impressed with himself for keeping his heart rate down to ninety beats per minute. Banner then went to work and accidentally got a drop of blood in one of the bottles, unaware that he had not cleaned it.[2]

Failed Cure[]

That night, Banner worked a serum suggested by fellow scientist he knew as Mr. Blue. He completed the serum and mixed it with a sample of his blood, but nothing happened. He contacted Mr. Blue and told him that it did not work, leading Mr. Blue to suggest a higher concentration. However, Banner replied that his supply was limited, leading Mr. Blue to ask for a blood sample. Banner spent time thinking about Betty Ross, reminding himself of his promise not to hurt anyone again. Several days later, Mr. Blue replied that he had figured out how to reduce the gamma saturation in Banner's blood, requesting more information about the experiment which created Hulk.[2]

Ambush in Porto Verde[]

That night, however, a military team arrived at Banner's apartment, so Banner set a fake head in his bed and ran. He reached the Pingo Doce Bottling Plant, but the military followed him inside. His pulse raised and Banner transformed into Hulk, who easily fought through the soldiers and escaped the military. Hulk then returned to being Banner and ran toward Culver University.[2]

Retrieving Data[]

Banner returned to Culver University and went to the lab where he and Betty Ross worked together. He found a computer and accessed the school's network after several tries. He searched for the data connected to Project Gamma Pulse, but found no results, causing him to realize that the data had been erased. Banner happened upon Ross and went to where she lived, telling her about his scientist friend and what was happening, and Ross realized that Banner was talking about Samuel Sterns. Banner explained that Sterns needed the data from Project Gamma Pulse, leading Ross to surprise him by giving him a USB drive containing the data, which she said she had taken before it was confiscated.[2]

Ambush at the Bus Station[]

Banner and Betty Ross walked to a bus station to get to New York City, when the military suddenly arrived. Banner tried to run away through an underpass, but was cut of by an explosion, forcing him to turn around. Banner saw a soldier take Ross' arm to stop her from running to him, angering Banner enough to trigger a transformation into Hulk. Hulk punched the ground, sending soldiers and vehicles flying backwards. He fought the soldiers until they backed down and escaped, taking Ross with him.[2]

Temporarily Cured[]

"You're all right! It worked!"
Betty Ross to Bruce Banner[src]

Hulk and Betty Ross found shelter in a cave, where Hulk sat with his arms folded, wanting to protect Ross. Banner's heart rate eventually slowed, allowing him to revert back to himself. He told Ross it was time to visit Mr. Blue, so they took the USB drive and went to Empire State University in New York City.

Upon arriving, they found Sterns in his laboratory, and Sterns revealed that he had successfully created an antidote to the Hulk. However, he explained that Banner would need to transform into Hulk for it to work. Banner easily transformed himself, becoming the Hulk, and Sterns immediately injected him with the antidote. Within minutes of being injected, Hulk transformed back into Banner, the flare-up having been cured. Ross got excited and told Banner that his struggle was over. However, Emil Blonsky then came into the lab and had a soldier fire a tranquilizer dart at Banner, rendering him unconscious. Banner was then taken to Thaddeus Ross.[2]

Hulk's Return[]

Duel of Manhattan[]

Banner was reunited with Thaddeus Ross, but an explosion occurred nearby as a soldier called out that Hulk was in the street. Ross turned to the television and saw that Emil Blonsky had turned himself into a monster like Hulk named Abomination. Banner was alarmed by the appearance of the creature and told Ross that he was the only thing that could stop it. Ross let Banner go fight it as he transformed into Hulk again, and the two began fighting. Hulk eventually defeated Hulk and stood in the streets of Manhattan as fires burned around him.[2]

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Artificially Enhanced Physiology: Banner was a scientist who was born without innate powers. However, during his involvement in Project Gamma Pulse, he injected himself with a heavy dose of Gamma Radiation that created a large, ten-foot-tall green monster within him known as Hulk. Hulk was substantially more powerful and stronger than Banner was, with the drawback that he was less intelligent and able to communicate.
    • Transformation: Whenever Banner's heart rate elevates too much, his body grows to be ten feet tall and green with much larger muscles known as Hulk. Hulk had powers beyond those which Banner had.
      • Superhuman Strength: Hulk's primary power was his strength, which was greatly enhanced by the gamma radiation. Hulk was able to punch the ground so hard that shockwaves sent back not only people but also military vehicles. He was able to fight Abomination, who was able to lift entire vehicles himself.
      • Superhuman Durability: Hulk was able to survive punches from Abomination, who was strong enough to lift cars on his own.
      • Superhuman Speed: Hulk was able to outrun the United States military.

Abilities[]

  • Genius-Level Intellect: Banner received a PhD in science and was intelligent enough to be recruited for the United States military's research department.
  • Master Scientist: Banner worked with the military on ways to enhance a soldier's abilities using Gamma Radiation beyond that of what a human is capable of. He tested this on himself, creating the Hulk.
  • Expert Combatant: Hulk was proved himself capable of combat when confronting Abomination.
