Howard the Duck is an extra-terrestrial anthropomorphic duck who runs a criminal enterprise on Xandar as Howard the Duck. An associate of Nebula, he aligned with her to help defeat the corrupt Nova Corps in order to preserve his business.

Howard the Duck was on Xandar when Ronan the Accuser attacked, prompting Nova Prime to close the Planetary Shield, causing everyone to be stuck for fifty years. In this time, the planet became darker as isolation got the better of people. They resorted to going to Howard's Casino, allowing him to make a lot of money.^[2]

Five years in, the Duck was at a table in his casino with Mindy as he was about to win. He was then approached by Nova Corpsman Nebula. The Duck joked about Nebula's cyborg presence until she interrupted him by stabbing a Yaka Arrow into the desk. An annoyed Howard asked if she was ever off the clock and then told everyone to leave. Mindy complained, but the Duck told her to go.

He looked at the arrow, remarking how it meant Yondu was dead. Nebula explained that he was hiding schematics in the arrow. She revealed them, leading Howard to look at it in awe. She asked what they were, but he had no idea saying she was the detective. She replied that that was why she was asking him. The Duck said that only a lunatic would know what it was.

Howard and warn — Howard and Korg warn Nebula

Bartender Korg then arrived with drinks and casually said it was a Unit B-42 Mainframe Core. The Duck expressed his shock before Korg listed the reasons it could be used. He said source codes, prompting the Duck to tell him to go back to that one. A confused Korg recited many other suggestions before falling back on source codes. The group realized that someone wanted to access the source codes to open the Planetary Shield. Nebula knew she needed to get to the mainframe core, but the Duck said it was dangerous. Nebula did not care.^[2]

A Broken Nebula[]

"Nebula, even if I had, say, heavy weapon, you know, military grade, sure to kill, which I'm not saying I do, breaking them out would be bad for business."

Nebula returned to the casino all torn up and injured, with wires sticking out of her. The Duck asked what happened and said he warned her. Nebula assured she was okay and said a lady just needed a drink. Nebula then stood up before immediately collapsing, hitting a lever on the way down. The lever unleashed coins, annoying the Howard, who claimed the machine was not supposed to cash out.

While Nebula was unconscious, the Duck helped Korg fix her up. Later, Nebula woke up and approached the group of the Duck, Korg, Groot and Miek. She asked the Duck if he had any weapons so she could go up against Irani Rael, who was trying to open the Planetary Shield to let Ronan the Accuser into Xandar.

The Duck was shocked she requested that, saying he did not have guns and if he did (emphasizing he did not), he would not want to supply it as the dark says have helped his business and when people are sad, they drink. Nebula then claimed Rael would take away his liquor license, effectively winning Howard over to help. The group then suited up, with the Duck using a bandana.^[2]

Saving Xandar[]

The group arrived at Nova Corps Headquarters as the Planetary Shield was being opened. The Duck stood by Nebula's side as the shield suddenly closed. Nebula explained how she put a twist on the codes. He shield then closed on Ronan the Accuser, killing him. Angry, Irani Rael ordered the Nova Corps and Yon-Rogg to kill everyone.

The Duck cocked his gun and unloaded the artillery on his enemies, causing great damage. This helped in the long run as everyone in the room were defeated. The Duck then walked outside to find Nebula, who had defeated Rael. They both looked up at the shield, which was opening, revealing the sun and light. The Duck told Nebula that she saved Xandar and the light was back, calling her Super Nova. She joked that he also got to keep his liquor licensed. The Duck quacked and said it was not bad for a day's work.^[2]
