- "What is the measure of a man? Is it the fruit of his labors? Or the secrets of his heart? Is it the person he is? Or the hero he could become?"
- ―Ho Yinsen[src]
Doctor Ho Yinsen was an Afghan scientist captured alongside Tony Stark by the Ten Rings.
Biography[]
Captured with Tony Stark[]
Helping Stark[]
Yinsen being held captive
- "Alone in a cave surrounded by weapons. That is a very poetic way to die."
- ―Ho Yinsen to Tony Stark[src]
Ho Yinsen was captured by the Ten Rings and kept in a cave with the infamous Tony Stark. Due to Stark being shot by shrapnel, he had an Arc Reactor put in his chest to stop the metal from reaching his heart. The two soon grew close and often played backgammon. During one of these times, Yinsen brought up how Stark believed life was a game. Stark replied that life was fun, but survival was the game. Another time, Yinsen had to explain that Stark's mind was valuable; he could not bribe his way out. Eventually, Stark made plans to create a suit of armor to escape. As the two began work, Yinsen talked about how Stark being surrounded by weapons at his imminent death was a poetic way to die. Stark told him to stop, calling him Shakespeare.[2]
Activating Remote Systems[]
- "They're coming. You have to leave now."
- ―Ho Yinsen to Tony Stark[src]
With the armor created, Tony Stark put it on and made his escape. Yinsen helped by staying in the cave and remotely activating different functions of the suit. As Stark walked out, he jokingly told Yinsen he owed Stark fifty bucks as it worked. Yinsen made a sarcastic comeback. Yinsen then reminded Stark he needed to destroy all of the Ten Rings' Stark weapons.
Yinsen continued to stay back in the cave and turned on many functions that Stark had requested such as his missiles. Eventually, Yinsen noticed that Stark's emergency power systems were online, meaning Stark's heart was starting to give out. Yinsen warned him of this. As Stark neared more enemies, Yinsen was able to activate his targeting system. He also turned on the radar until he realized how dangerous the outside was. He warned Stark to forget the weapons as his life was more important. However, Stark told him the weapons were his responsibility.
Having defeated Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, Stark told Yinsen he was heading his way. As Yinsen awaited, Stark asked what was happening. Yinsen broke the news that the soldiers were coming for him. He told Stark to leave, but Stark refused. Yinse told him that there were many Stark weapons, implying he could use them. Yinsen then lit the weapons, causing the cave to explode and killing himself as well as the soldiers.[2]
Legacy[]
- "A man who embraces his heroic nature pays a terrible price. He sees the darkness in the world and in his own heart. And he's forever changed. The child gives way to the lamb. And the day comes where he must ask himself... 'what kind of man will I be? Am I willing to die on my feet? Or will I live my life and my needs? Do I have what it takes to become truly great? To become more than a man. To become Iron Man."
- ―Ho Yinsen[src]
Yinsen's words stuck with Tony Stark as he fought to keep his weapons out of the wrong hands and also eventually embraced his role as Iron Man.[2]
