- "What is the measure of a man? Is it the fruit of his labors? Or the secrets of his heart? Is it the person he is? Or the hero he could become?"
- ―Ho Yinsen[src]
Ho Yinsen was an Afghan scientist captured alongside Tony Stark by the Ten Rings. Yinsen saved Stark's life, helped him build a rudimentary suit of armor to escape the captors and, and while doing it, became a moral mentor of sorts for him, telling him about the horrors his weapons caused. Once the armor was ready and they proceeded to enact their plan, Yinsen was discovered and killed by the Ten Rings.
Biography[]
Kidnapped[]
- "Alone in a cave, surrounded by weapons. That is a very pointed way to die."
"Oh, there he goes again. Give it a rest, Shakespeare." - ―Ho Yinsen and Tony Stark[src]
Ho Yinsen was taken by the Ten Rings and held in a cave alongside the infamous weapons manufacturer Tony Stark. Yinsen watched as Stark attempted to bribe Hajid to let him out, but got the surveillance window on the door slammed on him. Stark swore and sat down as Yinsen explained that they did not want money, but rather power. Stark suggested that money was required for weapons, but Yinsen countered that while there was a lot of money, Stark only had one mind, noting that he used it for weapons. Yinsen explained that the Ten Rings wanted Stark's technology and could not be blamed for wanting what Stark had. The two played backgammon together during their captivity, though Stark bragged about being undefeated in college. Yinsen asked whether Stark considered life to be a game, so Stark explained that he saw life as fun but survival as a game.
Yinsen helped Stark build a suit of armor to escape. He noted the irony of Stark potentially dying in a cave surrounded by weapons. Stark finished building the armor, and the two admired it. Yinsen suggests that the Ten Rings would like it, but Stark said that it was for them to use to escape. Yinsen asked what would happen to the armor after the escape, and Stark explained that he would make more since it was a work of art. Stark bet with Yinsen that it would work, with Yinsen doubting it. However, the armor did worked, and Yinsen stayed behind to help Stark operate it. However, Yinsen was discovered by the Ten Rings and killed for helping Stark.[1]
Legacy[]
- "I know you. And this isn't what you want."
"I made a promise to a friend." - ―Whitney Frost and Tony Stark[src]
Tony Stark escaped the Ten Rings Base and returned home, where he built a new suit and tested it, realizing that Yinsen would have loved it as he tested the armor. He became focused on destroying his weapons, motivated by his interactions with Yinsen.[1]
Personality[]
Yinsen was a mature and intelligent individual who was not afraid to criticize people when they needed it. He viewed life as more important than a game and did not like that Tony Stark felt differently. He encouraged Stark to grow and change the way he viewed the world. He was a relaxed individual, even when talking about grim topics and facing his own death. Yinsen enjoyed playing backgammon and was willing to help Stark to escape his captivity even if it meant his own death.
