The First Season of Helstrom premiered on Hulu on October 16, 2020. Months later, on December 14, 2020, it was announced that series was cancelled.[1]
Synopsis[]
As the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, Helstrom follows Daimon and Ana Helstrom, and their complicated dynamic, as they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.
Plot[]
In Portland, Oregon, Dr. Louise Hastings types on her computer when suddenly it starts typing "NO MERCY", causing her to call for a lockdown. Later, Sister Gabriella Rosetti meets with Daimon Helstrom to help a family who believe their son is possessed. Upon going to his room, Archer Cavallo starts speaking Latin, but Helstrom easily proves that he is faking which angers Cavallo. The child lunges at Helstrom but is surrounded by a ring of fire set off by Helstrom. Meanwhile, Ana Helstrom walks with Edward Tate and uses her powers to see visions of him murdering people. She kills him in retaliation.
Daimon gets a call from Hastings telling him that the patient is causing trouble. He goes to meet the patient at the mental hospital, which is his mother, Victoria Helstrom. He tries to talk to Victoria, but there is a demon inside of her named, Kthara, who taunts him back. Ana gets a call from Caretaker and looks through a casket that has killed a man. She finds a skull. Later, Daimon prepares for a tattoo in hopes of covering a scar on his body. He calls his sister, Ana, asking to talk. Meanwhile, Alex Tilden enters his truck, but finds a bloody person in the seat. The person then attacks him.
Ana meets Daimon at the asylum and they try to find a way to get Kthara out of their mother. Daimon also pushes to expand their relationship to actually acting like siblings. Ana gets close to Victoria, but the demon slaps her. Ana grins and says that it's the mother she remembers. Rosetti asks how they have powers, Ana says that it comes from their father. Ana's best friend, Chris Yen, finds the skull and hears it calling to him, but is interrupted by Caretaker. Later, he is swayed by the power and lets the skull bite his arm.
Daimon and Rosetti get a call about Tilden's truck accident. They arrive and Daimon realizes that Tilden is marked. He explains that only the strongest demons have the ability to mark their hosts. The demon, Magoth, uses a young victim to taunt the two. He then mentions Ana, which gets Daimon angry, so Magoth sets off a fire around them. Meanwhile, Ana uses memories to wake up Victoria without the demon for a short time. However, this is just Kthara taunting her. Daimon puts his hand on Tilden, eradicating Magoth, but not before the demon says that a worse one is out there. Another demon, Basar, opens up his rib cage and devours a victim at a public restroom.
Afterward, Magoth and Basar realize Daimon is coming. They decide to get the woman. Daimon later calls Ana and asks what she did to wake their mother as she hasn't been this lucid in years. Ana is then approached by Henry, Caretaker, who tells her that he found out her father, Marduk, is alive. She meets with Daimon at the asylum and see their mother. Theit mother warns them of Marduck's return and says he always finds his victims eventually. Kthara then awakes and remarks on how Victoria is a fighter.
The two then meet with Rosetti who tells them that she researched their father and found out that Ana wasn't the only survivor. There is a woman named Zoe Richards who also survived their father, but her family is private about the matter. Hastings has lung cancer and hides the medication from Henry. The siblings and Rosetti arrive at Richards' house, but believe Richards' story about the experience was fake. Meanwhile, a supernatural force tells a patient to kill Caretaker, which he attempts to do. Caretaker is able to get away and finds the medicine bottle in the process. Magoth goes around killing frat boys.
Ana decides to go out to get the truth from Richards. Rosetti and Daimon go to find her which leads to Rosetti going into the cellar alone. There she finds a woman with a half burned face claiming to be the real Richards as she pours gas on the ground. As it turns out, her twin sister, Aubree Richards was posing as Zoe. She then lights the flame, but is saved by Daimon. She says she just wants the pain to stop. Ana is led by a guilt ridden Aubree to their father. Aubree did this out of guilt for not helping her sister. Basar, in a possessed body, attacks Ana and eventually kills Aubree before getting away.
Looking for better options, the siblings go to the facility in San Francisco to visit Yen, but find a dead man named Cameron Tate, and the skull is gone. Knowing it was Yen's doing, Daimon tries to call the police, but is stopped by Ana. Yen eventually finds himself underground in a pit of spiders. Daimon returns home to find Magoth in his living room offering a deal. Ana for their mother. Daimon refuses which causes an outburst from the demon, but is stopped by Daimon as well as Ana, who just arrived. Meanwhile, Victoria screams in pain as Yen is a floor under her, with the skull affecting her.
Victoria is taken out of the hospital while Yen is found and put in a mental hospital. She later gets better. Ana visits Yen to talk, but he just yells for the skull. Later, Daimon, Ana, and Rosetti are together, but Daimon notices something strange. He tells Ana to stay in the car while he investigates. He sees a dead mechanic under a car. Rosetti steps out only to be snatched by a demon, but is saved by Daimon.
Later, Yen acquires the skull and sneaks up on a doctor, only to get stopped by Ana. Basar, who is possessing Keith Spivey, approaches Daimon with his rib cage open. Victoria takes the skull and shoves it into Basar's chest. Daimon then gets up and splits Basar in half. Victoria is then subdued by Kthara and takes the body to a truck. She closes the truck and gets driven away.
Ana blames Daimon, saying that she thinks Mother was never there and it was always Kthara tricking them. Daimon let his emotions get the better of him. Meanwhile, Caretaker is taken by Esther Smith and the Blood. Daimon and Rosetti go to a ward to find a possessed man. The demon inside says that he envies Daimon because he is only half demon. The demon explains that they only want freedom, and Kthara can give it to them. The demon promptly twists his head 180 degrees. They then arrive at Caretaker's home to save him. Daimon lashes out in anger using his powers and burns many of the Blood members alive. Later, he finds a piece of his father's dagger in his pocket.
Meanwhile, a possessed priest named Raum arrives and tells Kthara that they couldn't complete the mission. Knowing more demons are coming, Kthara kills Basar and takes something out of him. Daimon tells Ana about the dagger and decides to go back for the other piece as it could kill Kthara. He and Rosetti go to his old home and find that it is for sale. While they fight demons to get the dagger, Ana asks Hastings if she could use the dagger to kill Kthara. Hastings refuses, but Ana explains that touching it gives her horrible memories that she cannot handle and Daimon would not be able to live with the fact that he might've killed his mother inside Kthara.
With the dagger, Ana and Hastings sneak up on Kthara. However, this doesn't work, Kthara takes Hastings and stabs Ana with the dagger. Kthara tells Ana that the pain she feels is the pain Kthara feels all of the time. She allows Victoria to come out which makes Ana weak. Ana decides that she cannot stab her mother, instead she suffocates her so she would not suffer. Rosetti and Daimon return to their room. Daimon takes a shower while Rosetti washes up, but she feels sick and looks in the mirror. She finds that she had been marked by Basar, she falls to the ground. However, when she gets back up, it isn't Rosetti, but Kthara, who has possessed her. She then walks over to Daimon and comes on to him, revealing she is Kthara. She takes out the piece of Basar that she pulled from his corpse and puts it inside Daimon. Soon, they are in bed together. They wake up the next morning feeling sick.
As it turns out, Victoria was not killed by Ana's doing, so Ana stays by her bed side. She is freed from Kthara, who is somehow gone. Meanwhile, Rosetti looks down at her stomach and sees that she is pregnant. Basar, in Daimon's body, acts like Daimon and tells her she is not pregnant with something evil. Rosetti realizes that it isn't Daimon. Basar then goes to see Victoria and starts to choke her. Ana realizes it's not Daimon and fights him. Caretaker and Hastings arrive to see the siblings are knocked out. They then tie up Basar.
Yen is with his boyfriend, Derrick Jackson, when he feels weird. He goes to check his bite marks and sees there are more. Meanwhile, Rosetti wakes up from her sleep to find that her pregnancy is far along and that Kthara is next to her. This makes her realize that Kthara wasn't possessing her anymore because she is the baby. Victoria visits Basar and tells him that Kthara doesn't actually love him and she knows that because Kthara was in her. Basar doesn't believe her.
Raum gives the hostage, Rosetti, a shot, but notices blood coming from under the bed. It is from Joshua Crow, whom he's possessing. The distraction allows Rosetti to stab Raum and run. Rosetti knocks on Daimon's door and finds Victoria and Hastings. They lay her down to rest. Back with Ana, Basar taunts and lunges at her. Suddenly, Daimon gets control and asks for Rosetti. He starts fighting for control of the body, but is overwhelmed. Once paramedics arrive, he is pronounced dead.
Raum and Magoth show up outside Daimon's home looking for Rosetti. Caretaker arrives just in time before they fight. He stabs Magoth with his half of the dagger. Raum then goes to impale Caretaker, but Hastings steps in the way, taking the hit. Ana arrives to find the EMTs taking Hastings away. After Caretaker explains what happened, Ana explains what happened with Daimon.
In the aftermath, Rosetti goes to a church to say prayers. The Archbishop does not take her pregnancy well, as she is a nun. Yen approaches Ana and tells her what is happening. They show Caretaker who explains he is now a Keeper. With being a keeper, Yen gains new knowledge. He figures out how to fix the dagger. Ana needs her fire and blood to be mended into the dagger for it to be fixed. Meanwhile, Basar wakes up in Daimon's "dead" body. He, Magoth, Raun, and Kthara bring Rosetti to an abandoned carnival site.
Ana mends the dagger together while feeling the pain of every single person who was killed by it. At the carnival site, Rosetti prepares to give birth. Ana and Yen arrive at the site to stop the demons. Ana fights Basar in Daimon's body. Basar stabs Ana which makes Daimon briefly come out. He begs Ana to kill him. Ana brings out the dagger, that turns into a long flame. She stabs Daimon in the back, which takes out the piece of Basar. Meanwhile, Kthara is birthed into her very own body.
Rosetti is about to be executed by the demons when Daimon, who is free from Basar, arrives. He kills all of the demons using the blade, saving Rosetti. Yen comes in and takes the baby. He vows to watch over her and make sure there is no evil in her. He holds onto the dagger just in case.
Later, Caretaker sits by Hastings' bedside when she wakes up. He explains that she almost died multiple times, but pulled through. The doctors also took out the tumor in her lung. Outside, Daimon sits on a bridge. He had attempted to jump off of that bridge 20 years ago to kill himself. However, he lived over his guilt of not saving Ana from their father. Ana sits next to him. He tells her he loves her and thanks her for saving him. At Victoria's home, the Helstrom family, Hastings, and Caretaker have dinner together. Meanwhile, Rosetti has started to question her faith and joins the Blood, a group that hates demons.
A month later, Yen and Kthara are at a bridge. Kthara has grown abnormally quickly and is now a young kid. Suddenly, an old man approaches them. He is satisfied that Yen is the new keeper. He then asks Kthara if she remembers her real name. She says it's Lily and that the old man is "Papa". The old man seems happy as he takes Lily away from Yen, killing people along the way. He then tells her that they are going to find her siblings, Ana and Daimon.
