Heaven's Half Hour is the first episode of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again.
Synopsis[]
Matt Murdock gives up the mask. Wilson Fisk has his sights set to new heights.
Plot[]
Ending another shift at their law firm, Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson and Karen Page go to Josie's Bar to kick back and hang out. Nelson talks business with Kirsten McDuffie, while Cherry celebrates his retirement from the New York City Police Department and talks about the new vigilante White Tiger in New York City. Suddenly, Nelson receives a call from Benny Cafaro whom he stashed at his place after helping him out, but is now being harassed by someone. Nelson tries to calm him down and says that Cafaro is simply being paranoid, but Murdock hears that Cafaro is in danger and rushes off to check on him, which Nelson did not want to happen.

Donning his suit, Daredevil heads over there but then hears Cafaro apologizing to Nelson, admitting that he told the attacker where to find him. Daredevil rushes back but does not get to the bar in time as Nelson gets shot by Bullseye, right in front of a terrified Page. Daredevil and Bullseye fight each other at the bar, while Page tries to help Nelson but he soon succumbs to his wound and dies, to Daredevil's utter horror. Losing control over himself, Daredevil unmasks and brutally beats Bullseye, impulsively shoving him off the rooftop after he laughed at him demanding to know why he would do this. Daredevil sinks to his knees in dismay and removes his cowl, getting found by Cherry.

One year later, Wilson Fisk, who decided to distance himself from crime, checks in with his wife Vanessa Fisk who had been running Kingpin's empire in his absence. The Five Families members leave immediately as he arrives, and Fisk opens up to Vanessa about his experience of self-rebuilding. Fisk tells her that he can do a lot of good for the city, but for that he would need to sever all the connection to the underworld he once had. Vanessa says that she put a lot of effort into solidifying their empire, but Fisk lets her know that he collected enough signatures to join the race for the Mayor's position.

Nelson, Murdock & Page disbands with Page moving out of New York and Murdock gives up Daredevil for good, starting over with McDuffie at their new law firm. Checking in at the office, Murdock heads over to the courtroom to testify at Poindexter's trial, saying that no matter what verdict he receives, there would not be any justice since Nelson would not come back. Poindexter gets sentenced to life in prison and Murdock talks to Page who returned from San Francisco for the trial. Both of them are not happy with how abruptly their relationship ended and Murdock admits that he cannot be Daredevil anymore, as he let the worst happen.
Fisk publicly declares his candidacy, with his platform being clearing New York of the vigilantes, blaming them for all the misfortunes the city had been facing. Sheila Rivera and Buck Cashman help Fisk with his campaign, although the former is concerned with how unconventional Fisk's approach since to be. Daniel Blake chimes in, assuring them that the campaign is moving in the right direction, although Fisk is unamused by Blake's eagerness. Fisk questions how could a person like Blake be on his team, but Rivera points out that he does not take much and has collected a lot of signatures for his candidacy.
Murdock is deeply troubled when he finds out about Fisk's campaign, hearing people on the streets being divided on whether to support his approach or not. While some people are against a convicted felon becoming the Mayor, others are dissatisfied with how things are going in New York and yearn for any kind of change. On McDuffie's tip, Murdock meets up with Heather Glenn, thinking that she is a new client, but Glenn thinks that he was applying for therapy. Murdock and Glenn then realize that McDuffie actually set them up for a date, being displeased with that, but the two end hp hitting it off regardless.
Back at the office, Murdock chides McDuffie for setting him up like that, but she is not sorry and guesses that he will be meeting Glenn again. He then talks to Cherry, who works as an affiliated investigator at their firm, telling Murdock that a lot of police officers seem to eagerly support Fisk. Moreover, Fisk's campaign seems to be founded through fully legitimate channels, with some investment help from his wife. Murdock knows Fisk too well to accept it, but thinks that if he gets elected, then Fisk might be the Mayor that the city deserves.

Fisk advances his campaign, chewing his opponents for their propositions to merely regulate the vigilante activity, while Fisk is adamant on getting rid of them completely. Murdock meets up with Fisk at Square Diner and the two catch up on their lives, with Murdock bringing up Maya Lopez and an injury that Fisk recovered from. Fisk claims that he kept his end of the bargain the two struck in the past and had nothing to do with Poindexter's attack or Nelson's death. Murdock wonders if Fisk is gaming the system to win the election, which Fisk does not deny and only says that his goal is to give New York a better future.
Fisk then asks why did Murdock stop being Daredevil, to which he replies that after Nelson's death and he nearly crossed the line by killing Poindexter, he felt that he lost the privilege, which Fisk understands. Murdock says that he is willing to give Fisk a benefit of the doubt if he truly is a changed man, but he will intervene in case Fisk steps out of line. Fisk claims that Murdock did actually enjoy hurting Poindexter and adds that once he becomes the Mayor, he will drive all vigilantes out of the city, so Murdock would have to stay in line as well.

The two part their ways amicably and Murdock goes on another date with Glenn, as he hears the announcement that Fisk has won the election and became the Mayor. Murdock tells Glenn that he has a history with Fisk as the crowd of voters celebrate on the streets. Fisk meets up with Vanessa, feeling distant from her, and says that he is aware that she has been cheating on him. Vanessa asks him not to kill her lover, to which Fisk replies that he is not that kind of person anymore, promising not to go after him. Murdock shares a kiss with Glenn before she goes home, remaining on the streets, as Fisk's supporters listen to his message to the city, as he promises to be on the side of New Yorkers no matter what.

Trivia[]
- This episode was not the original first episode for Daredevil: Born Again, but rather a new episode created to serve as the first episode following the series' creative overhaul.
- The decision to kill off Foggy Nelson was made during the original production of the show, although it was intended to be off-screen.[3] According to Justin Benson, the decision to retain the death of Nelson for the creative overhaul was made before he and Aaron Moorhead had signed onto the show.[4] Additionally, Charlie Cox stated that he was not convinced that the decision to kill Foggy Nelson was the right decision to make.[5]
Behind the Scenes[]
- The original first episode for Daredevil: Born Again, directed by Michael Cuesta, did not feature Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, or Wilson Bethel as Foggy Nelson, Karen Page, and Benjamin Poindexter respectively. The decision to kill Foggy Nelson had already been decided in the original version, although his death was to be off-screen. The original first episode had an opening shot of Daredevil by the water, crying as he took off and dropped his helmet, as a response to Nelson having died shortly before off-screen.[6] Following the series' creative overhaul, the original first episode was scrapped entirely. Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson were hired to direct a new first episode while Dario Scardapane was hired to write it, with more connections to the original Daredevil series. As a result, Henson's Foggy Nelson, Woll's Karen Page, and Bethel's Poindexter were added to the series, although the decision to kill off Nelson remained unchanged.
