- "It would just be easier to burn this place down and start from scratch."
"Sure. Burn it down. Easy. Annihilating is easy. Razing things to the ground is easy. Trying to fix what's broken is hard. Hope is hard." - ―Sylvie Laufeydottir and Loki
Heart of the TVA is the fourth episode of the second season of Loki.
Synopsis[]
The TVA's Loom nears catastrophic failure but Loki, Mobius, and Sylvie have a He Who Remains variant.
Plot[]
At the Citadel at the End of Time, Miss Minutes reveals to Ravonna Renslayer that she once commanded He Who Remains' army during the Multiversal War, and that he had wished for Renslayer to lead the TVA with him. However, her memories were erased, along with those of all other TVA employees, at He Who Remains' orders. Miss Minutes then proposes that the two abandon their mission to create another He Who Remains and attempt to take over the TVA themselves.
Victor Timely arrives in the TVA and starts to wander its hallways, where he meets with Hunter B-15, Loki and Mobius. They take him to Ouroboros and Casey as they brainstorm methods to protect the Temporal Loom from overloading and causing a catastrophic failure. Ouroboros reveals that everything he knows is traced back to an individual named "Victor Timely"; this causes a predestination paradox, as Timely's own genius originated from the TVA Handbook authored by Ouroboros.
To save the Loom, the Throughput Multiplier would have to be escorted to the launcher for it to be docked with the Loom and increase its capacity to manage the branching timelines. Sylvie expresses doubt about Timely's faithfulness and is reluctant to help save the TVA, but Loki convinces her to relent. As Timely assists Ouroboros in completing the Throughput Multiplier with his prototype, Gamble persuades B-15 to approach Dox and her loyalists in their holding cell and convince them to help protect the reformed TVA from Renslayer. When Renslayer and Miss Minutes arrive to recruit Dox and her men, all resist except for Brad Wolfe, who wants to resume his life on the Sacred Timeline. Miss Minutes has them crushed to death and relishes in the bloodshed as Renslayer and Wolfe look on uncomfortably, before locking out all of the TemPads from the TVA network.
Timely and Hunter D-90 take a break to visit the TVA's hot cocoa machine after Timely heard about its existence from Mobius, quickly becoming fascinated with it. As D-90 enjoys his cocoa, he is pruned by Wolfe, who then kidnaps Timely. Renslayer and Miss Minutes interrogate Timely for his Throughput Multiplier, while Loki and Sylvie rush to rescue him as Ouroboros, Mobius, Casey and B-15 approach the failing Loom. Along the way, Sylvie encounters the time-slipping past version of Loki, who is then pruned by his present self. To regain access to the TemPads, Ouroboros reboots the system, which deactivates Miss Minutes and the TVA's magic-suppressing devices. Before going offline, Miss Minutes spitefully proclaims to Timely that he will never become He Who Remains.
Renslayer sends Wolfe to investigate, but he is enchanted by Sylvie to prune Renslayer, allowing Loki and Sylvie to rescue Timely. They return to the Loom and reunite with the others, as they await to scan Timely's temporal aura to unlock the blast doors. Running out of time, Loki nominates himself to launch the Throughput Multiplier, but Timely insists on taking up the task as he had designed the device. The temporal radiation present in the chamber has dramatically risen since Mobius pulled Loki from the timestream, but the group remains optimistic. The blast doors open and Timely rushes out with the Multiplier, only to be spaghettified the moment he steps foot outside the airlock. The temporal radiation in the chamber had exceeded beyond the lethal limit.
Loki, Mobius, Sylvie, Ouroboros, Casey and B-15 could only do nothing but ponder their failure as the Temporal Loom explodes, and a blinding light surges into the TVA. Loki closes his eyes.
