HYDRA leader Baron Strucker received word that S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Mark Smith was unhappy with treatment within the organization. Strucker discretely invited Smith to meet with him at Hangar SFC-5, where he told Smith that he knew that Smith wasn't happy. Smith began to defend himself, believing Strucker to be with S.H.I.E.L.D., but Strucker quickly explained that he and Smith share similar beliefs about the distribution of power among the agency. Strucker offered Smith a position within his side of S.H.I.E.L.D., asking for proof regarding his loyalties. Smith left and helped HYDRA obtain Loki's Scepter.[1]
