Master Guang Bo (Mandarin: 光伯) was an elder of Ta Lo. He opposed Xu Wenwu's plans to destroy Ta Lo in his attempt to find his long lost wife, and took part in the Battle of Ta Lo during which he was killed by a Soul Eater, but not before having mentored Katy Chen in the art of archery.
Biography[]
Elder of Ta Lo[]
As a villager from Ta Lo and a soldier dedicated to protecting the world from the threat of the Soul Eaters, Guang Bo was deeply attached to the traditions of Ta Lo and was wary of outsiders. As such, he refused to let Xu Wenwu settle in Ta Lo despite him being married to Ying Li, causing the latter's departure.[1]
Wenwu's Quest for Ta Lo[]
Confronting the Outsiders[]
Guang Bo was among the troops that stood outside the village of Ta Lo when Shang-Chi, Katy Chen and Xu Xialing arrived in the village. He initially was hostile towards them, demanding that they return to their own world. However, he was confronted by Ying Nan who asked that he and the other citizens of Ta Lo should stand down, welcoming the trio along with Trevor Slattery.[1]
Teaching Katy[]
Despite his prejudice against the outsider, Guang Bo reluctantly taught Katy Chen how to shoot a bow and arrow, witnessing her quick progress. However, when preparing for battle against the Ten Rings, he claimed that she was not ready and confiscated her bow.[1]
Battle of Ta Lo[]
Guang Bo stood in the frontline to confront the Ten Rings as they arrived in Ta Lo, led by Xu Wenwu who believed that his late wife Ying Li was kept prisoner behind the Dark Gate of Ta Lo. As Wenwu accused the elders of Ta Lo to have driven Li away, Guang Bo insisted that they only opposed his presence in Ta Lo, but he was silenced by Wenwu who told him that Guang Bo could not speak to him as to an equal.
As the Ten Rings launched the assault, Guang Bo ordered his own troops to charge, leading to a fierce confrontation during which Guang Bo was able to hold his own against the Ten Rings. Many soldiers of Ta Lo were captured by the Ten Rings, but were eventually released due to the sudden arrival of Soul Eaters, which had been liberated from the Dark Gate because of Wenwu. Due to this new threat, Guang Bo allied with the Ten Rings, and reluctantly allowed Katy Chen to join in the efforts, simply ordering her not to die.
Guang Bo directed his men to the lake, preparing to shoot the Soul Eaters that were arriving. Noticing Chen's tension, he instructed her to deeply breathe before ordering his archers to unleash their arrows onto the Soul Eaters, killing many of them. Once the Dweller-in-Darkness, which had been released from the Dark Gate as well, tried to steal the soul of the Great Protector, Guang Bo warned Chen that if it succeeded, it would be too powerful to stop.
Guang Bo instructed Chen to aim for the creature's throat to kill it. However, as he drew his bow to join in the effort, a Soul Eater attacked him from behind and dragged him into the air to suck out his soul, leaving his lifeless body to drop to the ground.[1]
Personality[]
As an elder of Ta Lo, Guang Bo was fiercely attached to the village's traditions, and was deeply protective of his village, as a result he did not trust outsiders, which notably led him to refuse to let Xu Wenwu live in Ta Lo along his wife Ying Li. He initially demanded Shang Chi, Xialing, Katy and Trevor to leave Ta Lo when they came with a warning. He was also prejudiced towards Katy Chen as she manifested the wish to train with a bow and arrow. However, Guang Bo was not completely narrow-minded and was actually kind at heart, later accepting to teach Katy, which resulted in her developing great archery skills. Although he feared for her life and initially refused to let her take part in the Battle of Ta Lo, he then accepted her assistance to take down the Soul Eaters.
