Howard's Casino[]

Groot was on Xandar when the Planetary Shield was closed by Nova Prime as protection during the Battle of Xandar where Ronan the Accuser tried to destroy the planet. The shield was designed to stay active for fifty years, meaning no one could leave.[1]

Groot works at Howard's Casino

Five years later, Groot had become a dealer at Howard the Duck's casino. He dealt the die as Nebula entered. Later, Groot was playing rock, paper, scissors with his colleagues, Korg and Miek when an injured Nebula returned. Groot helped Korg stitch her up. When Nebula awoke, Groot and the others agreed to help her stop Irani Rael from surrendering and opening the shield for Ronan the Accuser.

Groot takes care of Nova Corpsmen

At Nova Corps Headquarters, the group was approached by Nova Corpsmen. This prompted Groot to extend his limbs out at them and viciously swing his arms back and forth, disposing of them. They then ambushed Rael, the Nova Corps and Yon-Rogg as the Planetary Shield was being opened. However, due to a trick performed by Nebula, the shield closed, killing Ronan who was passing through. The group then attacked the enemies, defeating them and saving Xandar.[1]
