The Golden City, also known as Birnin Zana,[1] is the capital city of the Kingdom of Wakanda.
History[]
Founding[]
The Golden City was founded by the Golden Tribe as the main city of Wakanda. Located at the heart of Wakandan civilization, the city displays incredibly advanced pieces of technology such as the Wakandan Maglev Train for public transportation.[2]
Infiltrated by Ulysees Klaue[]
In 1989, Ulysses Klaue managed to infiltrate the Golden City with help from Prince N'Jobu in order to steal a cache of vibranium, which resulted in the death of several Wakandans.[2]
New King[]
T'Challa returns to the Golden City
In 2016, T'Challa returned to the Golden City in order to be crowned the new King of Wakanda. He was greeted upon arriving by his mother Ramonda and his sister Shuri. Following his incoronation, T'Challa took a stroll with his friend Nakia in the Golden City while being escorted by the Dora Milaje, and they discussed the relevance of Wakanda's seclusive policy.
Following a failed attempt to arrest Ulysses Klaue, T'Challa, Nakia, and Okoye returned to the Golden City with a wounded Everett Ross, who they hid in Shuri's laboratory. Later, Erik Killmonger managed to be granted access to the Golden City after he presented himself with the body of Klaue, enabling him to have an audience in the Citadel during which he claimed the throne of Wakanda. Shuri, Ramonda, Nakia, and Ross were forced to flee the Golden City when Killmonger seemingly killed T'Challa in ritual combat. However, they were ultimately able to return after reuniting with T'Challa in Jabari Land. Once reinstated as King of Wakanda, T'Challa took another walk with Nakia in the streets of the Golden City and thanked her for her invaluable assistance, before reestablishing their relationship.[2]
Sanctuary for Bucky Barnes[]
Shortly afterwards, T'Challa offered sanctuary for Bucky Barnes. Steve Rogers brought Barnes to the Wakanda Medical Center where he would be frozen in a cryostasis chamber until his HYDRA programming could be removed.[3]
Battle of Wakanda[]
An Outrider Dropship crashes over the Golden City
Two years later, T'Challa welcomed members of the Avengers into the Golden City as they had come to ask Shuri to safely remove the Mind Stone from Vision. While Shuri assessed the length of the task in the Wakanda Medical Center, Okoye was informed that Outrider spaceships were invading Wakanda's airspace. While standing on guard, Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, and James Rhodes saw one spaceship crashing on the dome. Upon seeing this, T'Challa ordered for the evacuation of the Golden City. Soon after, unbeknownst to anyone, Corvus Glaive, a member of the Black Order, entered the City and infiltrated the Center.[4]
Blip[]
In 2023, following the Blip, a celebration took place in the Golden City as Wakandans were reunited with their loved ones. T'Challa and Shuri reunited with their mother and watched the celebrations.[5]
Assata's Decision[]
Assata wanted to join the Dora Milaje, despite her disability requiring her to use a wheelchair. Assata met with Okoye in the Golden City, where she offered Assata a modified training regiment so that she could follow her dream. However, Assata turned the offer down, saying that she believed it to be impossible and choosing to focus on science at Wakanda University.
Some time later, Assata met with Okoye outside of the Golden City during Dora Milaje training and asked to join the Dora Milaje, since she realized that her disability should not prevent her from following her dreams. Okoye told Assata that her grandmother would be proud and started training Assata. Weeks later, Shuri and Ramonda met with Assata, and Ramonda commended Assata for having the courage to dream and follow her dream.[6]

T'Challa's Return[]
In an alternate universe, a young T'Challa left the Golden City and went outside Wakanda's dome. Years later, an adult T'Challa returned to Wakanda, accompanied by the Ravagers, and reunited with T'Chaka, Ramonda, and Shuri in the Citadel inside the Golden City.[7]
Zombie Apocalypse[]
Zombified Thanos stands outside the Golden City
In an alternate 2018, a zombified Thanos invaded Wakanda on his quest to obtain all six Infinity Stones. He stood outside the Golden City, wielding the nearly completed Infinity Gauntlet, as the quantum virus spread throughout the country.[8]
American-Wakandan War[]

In an alternate 2008, Erik Killmonger arrived in the Golden City to warn T'Chaka, Ramonda, and Shuri about the incoming attack by the Stark Liberator Drones. The Wakandan army led by Ramonda defeat the drones and protected the city. Afterwards, Killmonger became the new Black Panther and took up residence inside the Citadel.[9]
