Gateway University is a university situated in Portland, Oregon where Daimon Helstrom works as an ethics teacher.

History[]

Visited by Louise Hastings[]

Daimon Helstrom taught ethics at Gateway University, one day teaching a lecture about Lawrence Kohlberg's stages of moral development. He was momentarily distracted by the arrival of Louise Hastings, although he resumed his lecture. After class, Helstrom and Hastings discussed Helstrom's own life as a student. Helstrom complained to Hastings about having to work on exorcisms with Gabriella Rosetti, although Hastings tried to encourage him to give the nun-in-training a chance. Hastings recommended telling Rosetti the truth about demons, although Helstrom refused.

Several days later, Helstrom had his students taking an exam while he obsessively wrote an ideogram on a piece of paper repeatedly, trying to determine its meaning. He stayed long after the test ended, although was interrupted when the paper became consumed by fire suddenly.[1]

Massacre of Phi Gamma Epsilon[]

Basar later visited one of the frat houses associated with Gateway University, belonging to Phi Gamma Epsilon. He killed every student who was there, including Chad, who had begged for his life. Basar marked Bryce to be possessed by Magoth, who told Basar that Daimon Helstrom had been warned about their plan. Basar ordered Magoth to bring him Gabriella Rosetti.[2] The house was destroyed in a fire set by Basar, and a memorial was set up outside of the house in honor of its deceased members after the deaths were determined to be an electrical fire.[3]

Bryce's New Freedom[]

"You think you know what's real. You live your life believing the world is a certain way, and then suddenly, it just isn't what you thought anymore. Even when you try to help, it only makes it worse. You realize that sometimes there are no good answers. It's going to be alright, Bryce. Professor Helstrom and I won't let anything happen to you again."
Gabriella Rosetti to Bryce[src]

The day after Bryce had been successfully exorcised by Daimon Helstrom, Helstrom drove by the destroyed frat house and went to his office, where he was visited by Bryce, who was upset about the death of his fraternity and the coverup. Helstrom explained that he was not responsible for the deaths and stopped him from dropping out of school, trying to recommend a doctor. Bryce explained that he would not feel safe opening up to a doctor, the same reason Helstrom had him lie to the police about his friends' deaths. The two briefly argued about Helstrom being an ethics professor who encouraged Bryce to lie, and Bryce explained how horrifying it was being possessed. When Helstrom said that he could not imagine what it was like, Bryce agreed and left.

Helstrom asked Gabriella Rosetti to help Bryce, and she came to the school to meet with him. They discussed Rosetti's plan to find Bryce between classes, and Rosetti asked whether Helstrom thought that he should be talking people through their feelings after he exorcises them. Helstrom explained that Rosetti and Louise Hastings were better equipped for that part, and she agreed. Helstrom reacted sarcastically to her agreement, saying it looked painful, and noticed that Rosetti appeared upset. He asked her if she was alright, and Rosetti insisted that she was before taking Bryce's information and walking away.

Rosetti approached Bryce later, introducing herself as a friend of Helstrom's. She assured Bryce that she was a novitiate rather than a psychologist, upsetting Bryce. He told Rosetti that he was not religious, and she explained that demons are an issue beyond religion, having seen it first hand. He tried to get rid of her and told her to keep her voice down when she mentioned demons, but Rosetti told him that he was not the first person to be possessed by Magoth, and that she had seen it happen to somebody else. Bryce, frightened, realized that Magoth could possess other people, and Rosetti asked him to help her prevent that by talking to her.

The two sat down together in the dining hall, and Bryce explained his experience, talking about not thinking it was real and how being possessed was not like it was depicted in fiction. He explained that he did not know what was happening to him, and only might have seen the demon, but rather felt the its presence. He described the experience reliving his worst memory on loop, and Rosetti attempted to comfort him. She related his feelings to her own about learning the truth about demons, and told him that she and Helstrom would not allow him to get hurt again. Bryce asked for assurance, saddening Rosetti.[3]
