In an attempt to assassinate S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Jeffrey Mace, a group of former HYDRA operatives hired by the Watchdogs launched a missile at the Quinjet evacuating Mace from Sunbury, causing the plane to crash into Freyer National Park. While Agents Burrows and McCafferty were killed in the attack, Mace survived along with Phil Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie who were also on the plane. They discovered that they had to network available to call for backup, but before they could leave, Mace insisted on finding the body of Burrows.
Progressing through the park, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents found a communication scrambling truck but still kept looking for Burrows until they found a camp established by the HYDRA operatives, who had retrieved both Burrows' corpse and the briefcase he carried which contained Mace's syringes of Patriot Serum. As S.H.I.E.L.D. attacked, Mace seized the briefcase but was nearly killed by an opponent before he could inject himself with the serum. He was saved by his colleagues, who understood that the fight in the park would be even harder without Mace's artificial powers.
The team retreated in a cabin in the camp. As more enemies arrived, Coulson ordered Mace to wear his Patriot Suit nonetheless in an attempt to intimidate and distract them. Meanwhile, Mackenzie successfully destroyed the jamming truck. A gunfight erupted and Coulson protected Mace with his Energy Shield before retreating in the cabin while Mackenzie fought other operatives in another cabin.
As S.H.I.E.L.D. communications were working once again, the three agents were found by their colleagues. Daisy Johnson and Melinda May's LMD arrived on site and helped to defeat the remaining operatives. Once the battle over, all the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents left Freyer National Park and returned to the Playground.
