- "I never wanted it. And I never wanted you. I tried to love you. I tried. But I don't. That's the truth. 'Cause every time I look in your face I see Pete."
- ―Mariah Dillard to Tilda Johnson
For Pete's Sake is the ninth episode of the second season of the television series Luke Cage.
Synopsis[]
Hunkered down in a makeshift safe house, Luke and Misty butt heads over how to handle Mariah. Meanwhile, long-buried family secrets come to light.
Plot[]
At Rand Enterprises Research Facility, Luke Cage tries to get in while Misty Knight, James Lucas, Mariah Dillard, and Tilda Johnson grow impatient. He finally gets in, and Lucas sends a prayer to God.
Bushmaster walks into Mother's Touch to see that his Stylers were over taken by Cage. He angrily destroys the shop after finding out the Nightshade is gone. He sends out a bounty for Dillard and Johnson.
Johnson helps Lucas with his cut knuckles. Meanwhile, Dillard gets into an argument with Knight when Dillard refuses to confess so that they could arrest Bushmaster. Dillard says she will only confess if she gets immunity. Luke reluctantly considers it, while Knight firmly turns it down and leaves.
At the precinct, Knight talks with Deputy Chief Priscilla Ridley about the situation with Dillard, as well as Bushmaster. Ridley tells her to agree to the deal. Nandi Tyler listens in the background.
Cage talks with Dillard about his purpose in Harlem. After the talk, Cage goes to get coffee from the vending machine, but the coffee won't come out. With anger, he shakes the machine, but his father stops him and gently fixes it. Cage talks to Johnson about her healing remedies, and she reflects on her relationship with Bushmaster. Meanwhile Bushmaster talks to his uncle Anansi before Sheldon updates him on the bounty.
At Rand Enterprises, Dillard and Lucas talk about Luke Cage and Dillard's past. Lucas gladly shows Dillard pictures of young Luke. However, when Lucas turns away, Dillard discreetly takes his phone and calls Shades, but he ignores the call. Dillard angrily puts down the phone and sees that her daughter has walked in. Johnson talks about how she knows she has been the biggest disappointment to Dillard, but her mother replies saying that she is her happiest moment, and her darkest past. Johnson asks her to tell the truth, so Dillard explains to Johnson that her father is not her father. She slowly unfolds that she was raped by her uncle Peter Stokes and that Johnson is actually his daughter, as Mama Mabel didn't allow her to get an abortion. As Johnson starts crying, Dillard explains why she killed Cornell Stokes: he taunted her about being raped, so she pushed him out the window and beat his face in. She concludes that she never wanted Johnson and that she couldn't love her. As Johnson walks away, Dillard signs the immunity contract Knight brought in.
Meanwhile, the NYPD rush into Harlem's Paradise to arrest Bushmaster, but it's empty. Cage realizes it's because he somehow knew it was coming. They look out the window to see Bushmaster and his gang driving up, playing Jamaican music. They set up their fire arms. Bushmaster offers everyone a chance to leave except for Dillard, but Lucas doesn't allow Cage to take the deal. Bushmaster's men run into the building. Cage takes on Bushmaster, while Knight does most of the work inside. Suddenly, Dillard takes a gun and shoots at the enemies while taunting them. Bushmaster tries to stab Cage in the eye, but Cage throws him into the car and then knocks him out.
The cops arrive and arrest Bushmaster. Lucas and Cage talk, Lucas offers Cage to join him back in Atlanta, but Cage remarks how he has to see this through. Lucas gives him a talk to be better than him and that the best part of him is his mother. Lucas says that he has never been more proud, and he loves him.
In the police van, Bushmaster asks the cops what they know about Jamaica. He gives them a riddled speech about the birth of Jamaica's independence. He then flips them off and reveals he is holding a bomb, which soon explodes. Johnson returns to her shop to find a fatally wounded Bushmaster, sitting in the chair, in need of Nightshade. Dillard walks in the street until Shades picks her up and reveals that he kidnapped Anansi.
