The Third and Final Season of Runaways premiered on December 13, 2019, on Hulu.
Synopsis[]
In an action-packed Season 3, the Runaways frantically search for their captured friends Chase Stein, Gert Yorkes, and Karolina Dean. The kids go head to head with an unstoppable enemy who has targeted Leslie — or more accurately, the child she's carrying. Nico Minoru draws them all into a dark realm where its ruler Morgan le Fay is much more nefarious than anyone the kids have yet to face.
Plot[]
Chase Stein, Janet Stein, and Karolina Dean are trapped in the Healing Algorithm and experience simulations. Nico gets a vision from Morgan le Fay, an enchantress, le Fay tells her that she could help get Karolina. Magistrate in Victor Stein's body, his wife in Stacey Yorkes' body, and their Daughter in Tina Minoru's body, look for where the son could've ended up. Catherine Wilder finally confesses for the murder of Darius Davis which proves Geoffrey Wilder is innocent. Geoffrey gets released, and Catherine goes to prison. Xavin and Molly Hernandez infiltrate the Stein Mansion. Hernandez briefly suppresses the Wife's personality to reveal her mother, this buys time to get the Inhibitor Pods to suppress the Gibborim powers. Leslie Dean goes to the hospital to check on her unborn baby. She soon finds out that the baby is a Gibborim.
Nico and Alex Wilder also infiltrate the mansion and are able to disguise themselves thanks to the Staff of One. Nico then attacks Magistrate and keeps him distracted as Alex gets the three prisoners out of the algorithm. However, Janet sacrifices herself so that the other two could escape. Xavin then deploys the inhibitor pods which traps Magistrate. Back at the Hostel, Xavin realizes that one of them could be possessed by the son. Nico gets another vision from le Fay and decides to burn the Staff of One.
Nico goes back to her house and sees her father, Robert Minoru. Nico apologizes for his injuries and leaves. When Nico is gone, le Fay makes the illusion of Robert disappear. Alex meets his mother in jail. He angrily refuses her apologies and leaves. Upon returning to her cell, Catherine is murdered by her inmates. Geoffrey tells Alex who becomes so sad that his invulnerability allows the Magistrate's Son to awaken from inside Alex. The Son then goes to Leslie and kidnaps her, although she doesn't know she is being kidnapped as she thinks it's Alex. As the baby is coming, the Son doesn't want to go to the hospital, so he brings her to Tamar. Leslie, now realizing something's wrong, tells Tamar to contact Karolina.
le Fay contacts Nico and tells her to embrace her witch side. Nico explains that she destroyed the staff, but le Fay tells her that it still lives inside her. The Runaways go to Tamar's house to stop the Son. Nico prepares to duel him, but he tells her he will just take her body over and kill Karolina. Thus, Nico lets him go. They return to the Hostel and deliver Leslie's baby, Elle. Elle's birth causes the Abstract, in the Son's possession, to react. Xavin reveals that the Magistrate's family have activated the Gibborim Transport Device to get the Gibborim's home. Soon, the Son kidnaps Elle, but Xavin disguises themself as Magistrate and takes the baby. Xavin then decides to take her through the portal to keep her safe. The Runaways minus Alex then battle the four Gibborim. Nico hears le Fay telling her to give in, she does and manifests the Staff of One out of herself. She then uses power from the Dark Dimension to make the Gibborim vanish into thin air. However, le Fay secretly manipulated Nico. The immense power from the Dark Dimension released le Fay from her prison. When arriving to Earth, she wakes Robert out of his coma.
The Runaways wake up in the Dark Dimension as a result of the spell. They talk with a man named Quinton the Great who tells them he saw Tina, Victor, Stacey, and Alex. The group gets split up and find themselves in simulations of their own memories where they have to break their loved ones out of. Nico breaks out Tina of a memory of Amy Minoru's death. Karolina breaks out of a memory with Destiny Gonzalez then out of one of a darker version of Nico Minoru. Chase breaks Victor out of a memory with Victor's father, Curtis Stein. Molly escapes a memory of Gene and Alice Hernandez. Gert finds Stacey, who is in a memory of her erasing Gert's memory when she found Old Lace. This sparks an argument between them because Gert realizes it's the reason for her anxiety. The argument is broken up by Chase and Victor. Although they still haven't found Alex, they decide to leave and come back for him. Tina and Nico open a portal to Earth and they leave. Upon returning, they find out that they have been in the Dark Dimension for six months.
Nico tries to recreate the spell to get Alex back, but in unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the others go to get something to eat. At the diner, they see a Wizard employee handing out new Corvus phones. Molly and Karolina meet with Leslie, who has restarted the Church of Gibborim, Molly soon finds out that Leslie was involved in her parents death. Nico asks for assistance from Tina, who rejects it saying it is dangerous. Nico then says she will go to le Fay for help, but Tina tells her not to. Nico then gets a text from her father. She meets with Robert, who tells her that he is in love with le Fay. However, it's obvious that le Fay is controlling him.
Gert starts becoming enthralled by the Corvus phone, so Chase smashes it. The phone then disappears into dust leaving only a feather. Nico uses this feather to channel the Dark Dimension. She sees Alex being tortured by AWOL, Karolina stops the spell as she fears it's too much for Nico. Stacey and Victor work on inventions. Stacey finds out that Janet's conscious has lived on in computer programming. Meanwhile, Geoffrey and Tamar, who are now together, go to a party. Hernandez becomes enthralled by a Corvus phone, but is quickly taken care of. Nico awakens in le Fay's Witch Coven where Robert tells her that Tina is in the psychiatric hospital. She then goes and releases her mother. The Runaways post a video online about the Corvus phones, but it gets deleted by le Fay using magic. In retaliation, le Fay enthralls Geoffrey and makes him capture Victor and Stacey. le Fay's witch, Bronwyn, captures Chase, Karolina, Gert, and Dale Yorkes. Tina breaks Robert out of the spell and then tasks him with getting le Fay's magical book, the Darkhold. le Fay realizes that Robert is free, so she removes the magic that healed his wounds, thus killing him. Nico, saddened, returns to the Hostel and finds that Robert recorded the Darkhold with his glasses, she uses a spell from the book to open a Darkforce portal. Out of the portal come Cloak and Dagger.
After meeting, the three of them teleport into Wizard Headquarters and free the kidnapped Runaways, then free Geoffrey from the spell. The Runaways, minus Alex and Molly, then teleport into the Dark Dimension to save Alex. Meanwhile, Alex is being forced by a recreation of Darius Davis to kill someone. A recreation of Catherine Wilder tells him not to. The Runaways get help from Quinton who is killed shortly after. Later, a zombified Quinton goes after them. Nico catches Bowen's Lightforce dagger and uses magic to turn it into her own personal Dagger. She uses it to kill Quinton, making him vanish. Davis tells Alex that if he kills his mother, then he will let him go. Alex reluctantly does and Davis lets him be free. Dagger touches Alex's hand to see his hopes, but finds him standing alone with every friend's powers. She warns the Runaways before her and Cloak leave.
The Runaways get a call from Molly, who unbeknownst to them has been enthralled by the witches. They plan to sacrifice her for a spell. Geoffrey who isn't enthralled anymore, saves Molly, but is injured by her before Tina lifts her enthrallment. Geoffrey is taken to the Hostel where he is tended to by Stacey. Dale makes a serum to hopefully inhibit the Corvus phones from affecting anyone. He makes his rounds injecting it into everyone. However, before he could get to Chase, the latter picks up a Corvus phone and gets enthralled. He is restrained and given the serum. Tina makes magical salt and explains that it needs to be placed in a circle around le Fay so that Tina could cast a spell on her. Gert takes it upon herself to distract le Fay while she makes a circle around her. Gert gets attacked by magic, but manages to complete the circle before she collapses. Tina casts the spell and sends le Fay back to the Dark Dimension, but when they look at Gert, she is bleeding out. Chase comforts her, but she dies in his arms as everyone watches.
Many years later, a much older Chase Stein creates a time machine and travels to three years after Gert's death. He gets the help of those versions of the Runaways, a much more skilled sorcerer in Nico Minoru. Karolina Dean, who had broken up with Nico after Gert's death, and Molly Hernandez who is now a cheerleader. Chase explains that a more evil Alex Wilder from his time is after him as well. They find that the evil Alex had gone back to when they all got back together again before they found out about the Rite of Blood. This is to kill them before their friendships restarted. They capture Alex and bring him back with them to the day Gert died. When there, Chase goes up to le Fay and does the same thing Gert did. le Fay is defeated, but Chase dies in Gert's arms. He looks at Gert one last time knowing that he saved her, before he and the others disappear from existence. The actual Chase then runs in, happy that they won, although this confuses the others. Alex finds a note from his future self, but puts it in his pocket for later. The Runaways then walk out the Hostel together.
