"Mark XLII, inbound."
"I'll be damned. The prodigal son returns."

The Mark XLII Iron Man Armor is an autonomous prehensile propulsion suit that is Tony Stark's forty-second Iron Man suit and was built to serve as his main Iron Man armor following the Battle of New York and the construction of the Iron Legion. Designed for automatic deployment and assembly, the suit is composed of several separate sections that can collapse into small pods. Using an independent propulsion system, each section can fly to the user and automatically assemble on their person. The suit can be summoned at any time, responding to impulses relayed by microchips implanted in Tony Stark's left arm.

The Mark XLII never became finalized, as it was still in its testing phase when Stark was forced to start using it, thus it retained some design flaws in the weapons system and other functions.

History[]

Destruction of Tony Stark's Mansion[]

"J.A.R.V.I.S., where's my flight power?!"
"Working on it, sir. This is a prototype."
"That's one."
"Sir, the suit is not combat-ready."

Tony Stark built the Mark XLII a few months after the Battle of New York. It was first used in action when the Mandarin attacked his house. Stark used the suit to mentally suit Pepper Potts up in it to protect her from mortal danger during the attack. Pepper then made her way out of the mansion with Maya Hansen. When Pepper was clear of the explosions, Stark had the armor detach itself from her and donned it himself.

Since it was at 22% power, Stark had a difficult time defending himself. Nonetheless, he still managed to take down two of the three assault helicopters that were attacking. However, when he destroyed the second chopper, it came flying at him, sending Stark into the water.[1]

Back to Basics[]

"Oh my god! That... that's... Is that Iron Man?"
"Technically, I am."
"Technically, you're dead."
Harley Keener and Tony Stark[src]

Tony Stark fell unconscious, but J.A.R.V.I.S. helped him escape and flew them to Rose Hill, Tennessee, following a flight plan from his investigation on the Mandarin. His armor lacked enough power to fly back to California and the world believed him to be dead.[1]

Saving the Air Force One Crew[]

"Okay, first things first, I need the armor. Where are we at with it?"
"Uh, it's not charging."
"Actually, sir, it is charging. But the power source is questionable. It may not succeed in revitalizing the Mark XLII."
Tony Stark, Harley Keener and J.A.R.V.I.S.[src]

The armor was later repaired and recharged and used to save Tony Stark from the Mandarin's compound and to save most of the passengers and flight crew of Air Force One from the rogue Eric Savin's attack, before falling out of commission again after colliding with a truck. [1]

Battle on the Norco[]

Mark 42 Exploding

"J.A.R.V.I.S., do me a favor and blow Mark XLII."
Tony Stark[src]

Later, in the battle against Aldrich Killian, it responded to Tony Stark's anxiety and flew to him shortly after the Mark XL's destruction. It was used by Tony Stark to trap Killian against a wall. In an attempt to kill Killian, Stark had J.A.R.V.I.S. activate the Mark XLII's self-destruct. The resulting explosion was so powerful that, although Killian survived, it destroyed most of the oil platform and ripped through the Mark XLII.[1]

Transported to the Avengers Compound[]

Considering it the "prodigal son", Tony Stark reassembled the Mark XLII sometime later and kept it in Avengers Tower. As Stark was moving the Avengers stuff from the Avengers Tower to the Avengers Compound, the Mark XLII was one of the precious items on the Stark Cargo Plane.[2]

Capabilities[]

The Mark XLII Armor is undoubtedly one of the most unique and most powerful suits Tony Stark has developed. Due to a series of computer chips he has implanted in his arms, Stark can summon the armor, as well as place the armor on others, with a simple gesture. He can mentally command the suit remotely with the aid of a Telepresence Headset. Unfortunately, it is very unstable and crashes several times due to still being a prototype armor.

    To be added
  • Heads Up Display (HUD): The Heads-Up display showed important things for the suit. The Heads Up Display of the Iron Man suit was powered by J.A.R.V.I.S., Stark's artificial intelligence. The Suit also had Defensive and Offensive sections, able to switch around the sections, resorting to missiles and lasers. The HUD could also be talked to, and J.A.R.V.I.S. would reply to it. The HUD could scan people, missile identifications, make calls, and give crucial suit credentials such as power. The HUD also had navigational (GPS) support. The suit also had radio capabilities.
  • Self-Contained Life-Support System and Environmental Protection: The armor could be completely sealed for operations in vacuum or underwater, providing its own life support. It was also shielded against radiation. The armor was shown to be capable of operating underwater, was resistant to water damage, and displayed no sign of faults once submerged underwater.

  • Armor Summoning:
    Mark4p

Mark XLII assembled each in in each piece

Thanks to the new repulsor flight system, as well as the magnetic implants embedded in Stark's forearms, individual pieces of later armors could self-assemble themselves onto Stark or others. Stark was able to remotely summon the Mark XLII to Pepper for her to wear after his home was attacked by the Mandarin's forces. In a failed attempt to kill Aldrich Killian, Stark forced Killian into a suit that would then self-destruct.
  • Collapsible Plating: This suit also has qualities based on the Mark V and Mark VII that helped with the armor's portability, allowed the various parts of the suit to collapse for the user to step in and out of it seamlessly.[1]
  • Repulsors:
    Iron Man Three - 78451

Iron Man shooting at the helicopters

Particle weapons in the palm gauntlets that fired beams or blasts of concussive and explosive force, allowing them to repel physical and energy-based attacks. His repulsors shot down two of the three attack helicopters that destroyed his house and were capable of killing Extremis-enhanced soldiers at full charge.
  • Unibeam: A more powerful version of the hand repulsor located in the chest. However, it required more power from the Arc Reactor to use and could not be used as often. Iron Man used a blast through the chest to kill Extremis-enhanced Eric Savin after Savin survived a shot to the head from his repulsors.
  • Lasers: A powerful weapon in the gauntlet wrists that could cut through any common metal.
  • Missiles: To be added
  • Contact Electrification: The armor possessed a seemingly unique ability to electrify surfaces through physical contact, as Stark did to Heather and the rest of the crew members of Air Force One to keep their hands from opening when they grabbed each other to make a human chain.
  • Magnetic: The armor can magnetised feet for walking upside down.[3]
