The Second Season of Cloak & Dagger premiered on April 4, 2019, on Freeform. It is the final season of the show.
Synopsis[]
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is the story of Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson — two teenagers from very different backgrounds who find themselves burdened with and awakened to newly acquired superpowers, which are mysteriously linked to one another. Season two turns the heat up on our young heroes as Tyrone and Tandy try to find their place as more active heroes in this world. As they learn and grow emotionally, so will their skills.
In season one, we saw Tandy and Ty dip their toes into the world of hopes and fears; this season, they will dive deeper into this metaphysical pool. With enhanced powers and a decision to be the type of heroes they want to be, they make the choice to run into the danger, head first. They tackle a heartless vigilante and uncover an evil that's been preying on the young women of the city, as the show takes on more serious topics like gang violence and human trafficking.
Plot[]
A trumpet musician named Andre Deschaine started developing headaches that got so bad that he had to quit music. During the night of the Destruction of the Roxxon Gulf Platform, a depressed Deschaine planned to jump from a bridge, but got scared by the explosion and fell anyways. He survived with strangely minor injuries. Later, he realized that he gained powers, to feed off of others pain to ease his headache.
Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson both try to adapt to their new lives. Bowen and her mother, Melissa Bowen, regularly go to support groups to strengthen their relationship. A member of the support group, Mikayla Bell, has a boyfriend, Jeremy, who abuses her. Bowen takes it upon herself to go to his house and carve a warning message in the wall. However, she finds that Bell felt pity for him after this and decided to stay with him. Johnson finds out from Brigid O'Reilly that many gangs are meeting at the Rougarou Club. Cloak and Dagger pose as a couple to witness the meeting, but find that everyone has been murdered. They run in and find a vévé was drawn on the ground. O'Reilly follows them and yells for the pair to get out.
Johnson tries to get back together with Evita Fusilier, who is mad at him for leaving. He then goes to St. Theresa's Church and creates a vévé. The vévé transports him into an ambulance with Bell, who is being human trafficked. He is forced to escape when he is shot at. At the next meeting, the leader, Andre Deschaine, tells Bowen that Bell had overdosed and is in the hospital. Bowen goes to see her and checks her hopes, however, she finds nothing except her getting human trafficked. Johnson goes to see O'Reilly, but finds her tied up at her apartment. Bowen then goes to the dock where she saw her being trafficked, there she sees O'Reilly. O'Reilly interrogates the man as Dagger keeps watch. Johnson teleports O'Reilly to Dagger, who is confused. They turn the corner and see a second O'Reilly killing the man. The second O'Reilly tries to shoot them before Cloak teleports them away.
They go to Mina Hess who tells them that as a result of the terrors, O'Reilly became split, one of her is normal, while the other only has chaos, releasing Mayhem. They track down Mayhem's apartment and find research on both O'Reilly and Connors, that she has been doing since the split. They use the clues to find a building where many trafficked victims are. Bowen throws and Lightforce sphere at them, giving them hope. They then get everyone out. Mayhem then comes and shoots every trafficker in the place as she believes they should die for what they have done. She goes to shoot a kid involved, but Johnson sucks her onto himself using the Darkforce. Mayhem is transported to the Dark Dimension where she sees a version of Kenneth Fuchs who is alive.
Cloak and Dagger decide to go to the Dark Dimension as well, but only Bowen can go so that Johnson can take her out when she needs. Upon arrival, she finds an entity named Papa Legba, who gives her a coin to use on binoculars. When looking in them, she is transported to The Esplanade, a mall, where she finds Mayhem, who agrees to help them. They find a store where they suspect James Connors has been living. They then find a store selling records, each album contains the name of a missing person. Bowen finds records on herself as well, highlighting her darkest memories. She smashes one of the records and finds that Mayhem is gone. Meanwhile, O'Reilly tells Johnson that the Uptown Block Kings gang has recognized him and are after his mother. Johnson saves his mother, but cannot use his powers out of a deal with Papa Legba. Bowen finds Mayhem hanging Connors, but attacks her. Bowen is forced to use her powers, which also unlocks Johnson's, allowing him to teleport away with Adina. He then gets Bowen out of the Dark Dimension, but accidentally lets Connors free as well.
Johnson draws a vévé, which teleports him to the dock where Billy Johnson was killed. Connors waits there for him and asks to be arrested. Connors explains how he is a changed man from the Dark Dimension and knows what he deserves, but Johnson isn't sure if he's telling the truth. He brings Connors to his father, Otis Johnson, who wants to kill him, but instead decides to tie him up. Johnson touches Connors shoulder which gives him a vision of Connors the night he killed Billy. Johnson realizes that Connors actually is sincere, so he brings him to Adina, who is separated from Otis. Meanwhile, Bowen enlists the help of another leader of the support group, Lia Dewan, who gives her the location of her abusive boyfriend, Eric. She goes to see him and fights off his attacks. She is then tasered by Dewan, who reveals that she is involved in the trafficking. The unconscious Bowen is put in the ambulance to be trafficked.
A man named D'Spayre uses his Dark Dimension manipulation powers to use the records at the Esplanade and look through Bowen's hopes and dreams. However, in these hopes, there is one moment of despair. The unconscious Bowen ignites a Dagger, but Dewan sedates her, causing the dagger to disappear. D'Spayre then opens a hopelessness dream, one where Bowen is a drug addict. In the dream, Bowen soon realizes it isn't real life and almost breaks out, but is once again stopped. Her mind eventually breaks free and she sees D'Spayre, who is actually Deschaine, in the Esplanade. She realizes that he uses the despair of others to ease his headaches, which he explains he got the night of the Destruction of the Roxxon Gulf Platform. Bowen breaks the records and breaks free. She wakes up in an abandoned ambulance. She goes to Johnson and together, they save Bell, but D'Spayre shoots and kills Johnson. Bowen then falls into a state of hopelessness. However, this was another dream to manipulate Bowen. Bowen is then taken to the Viking Motel.
Bowen wakes up in the Motel and tries to attack Deschaine, but cannot summon her Dagger because D'Spayre has taken all of her hope, which is what lightforce drives on. Bowen is introduced to another victim named Del, who is so manipulated that she thinks that Dewan and Deschaine are helping people. Meanwhile, Johnson tries to find Bowen and goes to her support group where he finds Deschaine who tells Johnson that Bowen never considered him and friend and only used him. He then accesses a record in the Dark Dimension which makes Johnson believe it. However, Mayhem, who is still in the Dark Dimension, changes the record to something that improves Johnson's thoughts. Later, he draws a vévé and teleports to an ambulance where he demands the driver tell him information.
Deschaine had seen Chantelle Fusilier in Johnson's dreams, so he goes to see her, posing as a broken man with a headache. She sees through his lies, so when Deschaine tries to access records in the Dark Dimension, she meets him there. She looks through him and decides not to help as he could abuse his powers. Deschaine then takes another record that controls her heart and stops it, killing her. Before dying, she says she's not afraid of death. Meanwhile, Del listens to Bowen and tries to see if Dewan is lying. When she figures out this is the case, she confronts Dewan. In the next room, Bowen is about to be forced to have sex with a customer and hears the arguing, this gives her enough hope to manifest a dagger. Johnson shows up at this moment and they work together to take down the motel, Mayhem gives them more hope by destroying more records in the Esplanade. However, this causes an outburst of Darkforce that injures Johnson.
Bowen takes Johnson to Evita Fusilier and O'Reilly. They realize that Johnson is trapped in the Dark Dimension. Fusilier helps the two others get into the Dark Dimension. There, they see Papa Legba, but they are then separated. Bowen arrives at an arcade run by a Loa named Baron Samedi. She sees Johnson playing a game called Duel to D'Spayre. Meanwhile, O'Reilly sees the recreation of Fuchs, then gets teleported to the mall where she is ambushed by Mayhem. However, they talk out their differences and eventually merge into one person again. Deschaine's headaches get so bad that he uses his powers on Dewan to ease the pain. She is left hopeless in a field. Samedi tells Bowen that the only way to leave is to get Johnson to stop playing the game. After playing it with him, it doesn't work. On Earth, Fusilier realizes that Chantelle is dead and also finds out that the only way to get them out is to marry Samedi, just like her aunt had. After the marriage, the two are let go along with Mayhem, who had taken control over O'Reilly in the body. Meanwhile, Adina cannot handle Connors anymore and kills him. Bowen returns home to find that her mother had relapsed.
Johnson and Bowen then go to Dewan, in the hospital. They work together to read her memories and see how she met Deschaine. D'Spayre senses their interference and goes to the Dark Dimension to meet them and reveals his plan. To drown all of New Orleans in despair for him to feed off of it. Later, they arrive at a club where Deschaine is playing the trumpet in front of many hopeless people. They see that Deschaine drew a vévé that lights up as he plays effectively completing itself. Bowen throws a dagger that pierces Deschaine's physical body, although it doesn't matter. The vévé is complete, transporting everyone that was drained of hope to the Dark Dimension.
Cloak and Dagger go to Fusilier, who uses a vévé to open a portal to the Dark Dimension, she keeps it open with a candle. Once the candle goes out, they could be trapped. Mayhem and Fusilier keep the candle lit while they fight Dark Dimension entities. Johnson and Bowen find D'Spayre, who has many people under his control, sitting in the crowd, including Melissa and Hess. They attack D'Spayre, but are unsuccessful and put unconscious in the crowd. Their minds battle people that D'Spayre has made including another Johnson and Nathan Bowen. They soon find each other and work together to break free and gain consciousness. They approach D'Spayre and Bowen starts throwing daggers at the people, giving them hope. Johnson then gets close to D'Spayre and opens a portal. Dagger comes through and impales D'Spayre with a lightforce sword while Hess, Bell, and Melissa hold down the body.
Later, Mayhem takes Connors' corpse and hangs it in the precinct with a "confession" from Connors saying that he did all the crimes, finally clearing Johnson's name. Bowen decides to leave town to help other victims of human trafficking. Johnson joins her on the bus and they leave New Orleans together.
