Woking as valets for the Fairmont San Francisco hotel, Shang-Chi and Katy Chen drove a lot of cars. One day, a man came up in a red BMW. Throwing the keys to Shang-Chi, Chen grabbed the keys out of his hands and hopped in the car. After debating with each other, Chen took the car for a joyride with Shang-Chi in the passenger seat.[1]
Karaoke[]
Later, Shang-Chi and Katy Chen were leaving a dinner gathering with their friends, who expressed their confusion as to why a man who can speak four languages and a honors student from UC Berkeley would choose valet driving as a career. That night, Shang-Chi considered heading home to prepare for an early shift at the Fairmont the next day, but Chen got the idea for them to spend the night singing karaoke and getting wasted. They ultimately went with the latter choice.[1]

The next day, Shang-Chi visited Katy Chen at her house for breakfast. Chen's mother asked Shang-Chi if her daughter had applied to any new jobs, only to be disappointed when he replied that they both liked their job at the Fairmont. Before they could finish their meal, Shang-Chi and Chen had to leave as they would miss their bus for work. While on the bus, some men confronted Shang-Chi for his pendant, but he refused to hand it over. Thus, a fight broke out between him and the men, who were actually Ten Rings operatives. During this, Razor Fist destroyed the bus' braking mechanism, and the bus zipped right past the Fairmont Hotel as a result.[1]
