Shortly after Tony Stark's escape from captivity in Afghanistan, the United States Army troops stationed in the Kunar province were ordered to keep an eye on Stark's kidnappers, the Ten Rings terrorist group. When one day unknown aerial vehicle attacked members of the Ten Rings in the village of Gulmira, the two F-22 Raptors were sent to scan the area. However, the "bogey" was actually Stark in a flying armored suit. During the chase in the sky, one of the Raptors was damaged, but Stark managed to save the pilot.
When Tony Stark called Vice President Rodriguez thinking he might be in danger, Rodriguez told him that he was secure. When the conversation moved to President Matthew Ellis, Rodriguez said that he could have F-22s in the air if Air Force One had a hint of trouble.
It was designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities that include ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles.
