- "We made the difficult choice because we knew what our Strange was capable of. What, perhaps, every Doctor Strange is capable of."
- ―Captain Carter to Doctor Strange[src]
The Execution of Doctor Strange was the killing of Doctor Strange by the Illuminati as punishment for Strange's actions having caused an Incursion.
Background[]
- "While the rest of us banded together to try to stop Thanos, Stephen, as always, chose to go it alone."
"He turned to the Darkhold. Began dreamwalking. In hopes that our salvation might lie in the Multiverse."
"And guess what? It didn't. But he kept doing it anyway." - ―Professor X, Baron Mordo and Captain Marvel[src]
When Thanos became a threat to the universe, the Illuminati came together to put an end to his genocidal plans together. However, Doctor Strange decided to fight the solution on his own and used the Darkhold, through which he discovered the spell of Dreamwalking. Strange used the dreamwalking to find the solution to Thanos' threat in the Multiverse, and although it was fruitless, Strange continued to do that regardless. Eventually, Strange's tampering with the Multiverse resulted in an Incursion of two universes and the complete destruction of one of them. Realizing what he had done, Strange denounced the Darkhold and helped the Illuminati find the Book of Vishanti, which helped them to defeat Thanos.[1]
Execution[]
- "I'm sorry."
- ―Black Bolt to Doctor Strange[src]
Although Thanos was no longer a threat, the Illuminati were certain that Doctor Strange still remained a threat, since his reckless decisions costed them too many lives. Although he did his best to correct what he had done, Strange admitted that it was his fault and agreed that he is a threat which cannot be left around. After defeating Thanos on Titan, the Illuminati made the decision to execute Strange, which he accepted. Black Bolt expressed his sadness for what he had to do and said that he was sorry, killing Strange with a powerful sonic blast.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "That statue... what about the statue? You built a statue."
"The world needs heroes." - ―Doctor Strange and Captain Carter[src]
With Doctor Strange gone, Baron Mordo took his friend's place within the Illuminati. They decided to have Strange remained a hero for the public and claimed that he gave his life to defeat Thanos and save the universe. The Illuminati build a statue and the museum to honor Strange as Earth's Mightiest Hero, who died for an honorable cause.
One day, Mordo encountered Doctor Strange from the alternate universe, together with America Chavez, and let them inside the New York Sanctum. Mordo used the Sands of Nisanti to incapacitate Strange and Chavez and brought them to the Illuminati Headquarters, so Strange could face the Illuminati. They explained that Doctor Strange was considered a Multiverse-level threat and his presence in their universe could have to result in another incursion. However, before they could cast their votes on what to do with Strange, Scarlet Witch dreamwalked into her alternate self and attacked the Illuminati to get to Chavez.[1]
