In 1693, Evanora Harkness led her daughter, Agatha's trial in Salem, Massachusetts. Agatha was tied to wooden post with magic. Harkness inquired if she was a witch, which Agatha affirmed. Harkness replied by saying she had betrayed her coven by stealing knowledge above her place and practicing the darkest of magic, which Agatha denied. The witches tried to kill Agatha with energy beams as she pleaded with Harkness. Agatha continued to cry until her powers took over and she reversed the effect of the beams onto the witches and killed them. Agatha broke free of the post and killed Harkness before taking the brooch off her corpse and flew away.[2]
