"James, Carl needs you now more than ever. How can you be here for your community and every other family in the congregation, but you're never here for us?"
―Etta Lucas to James Lucas[src]

Esther "Etta" Lucas was the wife of James Lucas who discovered that her husband was having an affair with Dana Stryker. Not long afterwards, they had their own son named Carl Lucas. However, they abandoned him when he was sent to Seagate Prison.

Biography[]

James Lucas' Affair[]

"Look, heffa. You're not fooling nobody. You're little more than his hoe, and we both know it."
"He lied to me too, Etta. You think we're the only ones?"
"You're through. And you're done."

Etta talks with James about Carl

Etta married James Lucas, a famous Reverend of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church. However, James had an affair with his secretary, Dana Stryker, who became pregnant from him. The Lucas couple, desperate to keep the affair secret to avoid controversy, paid Dana for her silence and had her keep her son from Lucas, Willis, a secret, although Etta still had disdain for Willis. Two years later, Etta gave birth to Carl Lucas, whom she always called her miracle baby. Etta was concerned that James was rather estranged from his family and spent too much time with Dana when his son needed him.

Etta later found out that the relationship between James and Dana was closer than she anticipated when Carl saw her after she had sex with James. When Etta confronted Dana about it, she threatened to reveal everything about James' affair, but Etta told her that, if she did that, the Lucas family would stop paying for Willis' education, forcing her to keep her mouth shut. Carl eventually became close friends with Willis, but Etta always kept their relation a secret from her son.[1]

Years later, Carl was charged and imprisoned at Seagate Penitentiary, although he claimed that he did nothing and was framed. Etta and James visited Carl at the prison, where Carl tried to convince his father that he was innocent, but James refused to listen, while Etta believed her son.[2] Later, Etta had an illness and her condition became worse until she eventually passed away. James blamed Carl for Etta's condition and cut off all contact with him, so Carl found out about her death from the warden instead.[3]
