- "We took an oath to protect our kind from theirs."
- ―Esther Smith[src]
Esther Smith is the leader of the Blood. Due to a renewed demonic threat occurring after Basar was unleashed on Earth, she began looking for a weapon that could help the Blood kill demons for good, which led her to cross paths with Daimon Helstrom.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Losing her Family[]
- "They took my husband, my daughter, your son Jack. Don't we owe it to them?"
- ―Esther Smith to Finn Miller[src]
Smith was married and had a daughter with her husband. However, she lost her family to demons, who killed them. Smith developed a deep hatred towards demons and everything related to them, Marduk Kurios being chief among them. She joined the Blood, an organization dedicated to the relentless hunt of Demons, of which she eventually became the leader.[1]
Despite her hatred of Demons, Smith chose to not have the Blood track down Daimon and Ana Helstrom out of respect for Caretaker, despite the fact that they were the children of the Blood's archenemy, provided that the Helstrom children remained separated.[2]
Hunting the Helstroms[]
Meeting with Caretaker[]
Smith met with Caretaker in San Francisco, and was informed that a demon previously guarded by a Keeper had managed to escape from a crypt in Colma. She was also told that Ana Helstrom had traveled to Portland, causing Smith to understand that she could be reunited with her brother Daimon, something the Blood sought to avoid. Smith insisted that the Blood might have to take out Ana, and criticized Caretaker for protecting Ana from them, but Caretaker retorted that he actually wanted to protect the Blood from Ana.[2]
Kidnapping of Caretaker[]
In the aftermath of the massacre at the Blood Hotel perpetrated by Basar, Smith decided that the Blood could no longer afford to simply put possessed people in a coma, and that they had to find a weapon that could actually slay demons. Having grown distrustful of the Caretaker, Smith ordered members of the Blood to capture him and bring him back to his house, where Smith awaited him.
The two briefly talked, and Smith told Caretaker that Kthara had escaped Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health. Caretaker asked to go out and do his job, although Smith said that he had already failed his job, keeping Ana and Daimon Helstrom under control. She talked about the house, expressing surprise that Caretaker had kept it despite his rebellious youth. She taunted him with the memory of his deceased family, asking whether he wondered if he would have avoided their deaths by joining the Blood earlier.
Knowing that the Caretaker owned a large collection of blades and artifacts he had amassed through his years as a hunter of demons, Smith decided to test them all on a scar he had on his chest, hoping that one of them would cause a reaction indicating that it could harm demons. Initially, the blades tested by the Blood proved to be nothing but man-made. While the testing continued, Smith called Helstrom to offer him to collaborate to hunt down Kthara, but Helstrom refused. Smith then reminded Helstrom that the Blood had spared his life and his sister's for years.
Smith was eventually able to find a fragment of Marduk Kurios's dagger, which Caretaker had pretended having buried, and determined that it was the weapon she was looking for. Smith decided to immediately try out the weapon on one of her priority targets: Helstrom. She thus contacted him again and pretended that they could negotiate a truce with Caretaker as a mediator, and this time, Helstrom agreed to meet.
Smith, accompanied by some members of the Blood, waited for Helstrom to arrive into a barn, until he showed up with Gabriella Rosetti. She then remained behind as the Blood members slowly surrounded Helstrom, pretending to search him for weapons. One of them then attempted to strike Helstrom from behind with the dagger, but he blocked the assault. Much to Smith's horror, Helstrom was able to single-handedly defeat the Blood members attacking him, and she decided to flee.[3]
Ambush on Daimon Helstrom[]
- "Do you see them, Esther? Your people want mercy. Are you ready to beg for their lives?"
"No. Because it won't change a thing. If you're gonna kill them, go ahead. Barbecue me, too. It'll only prove our point. You and your kind, you're all the same. And we'll hunt you forever." - ―Daimon Helstrom and Esther Smith[src]
Following the attack on the Blood Hotel, Finn Miller was marked. Believing him to be the final person marked by Basar, Smith had him put in a cage at a Blood warehouse. She walked past Ahmad and commented on his craftsmanship making a knife, and saw Miller still in the cage. He begged her to let him out, explaining that he understood he was being used as bait for Kthara to possess him. She tried to inspire him to let them trap Kthara within him, although he continued to resist. Ahmad walked up to Smith and told her that they had found Daimon Helstrom, so she left Miller and prepared to attack him again.
Remaining dedicated to her hunt of Demons, Smith decided to use fellow Blood member Finn Miller, who had been marked for possession, as bait. She had him locked up in a cage, hoping that he would become a new host for the demon Kthara. Smith was then informed that Daimon Helstrom had been spotted, prompting Smith and several members of the Blood to go after him in an attempt to kill him.
As the night came, Smith waited for Helstrom to show up in a barn, where the Blood believed that he had buried the other half of Marduk Kurios's dagger. Like before, Smith initially did not take part in the confrontation against Helstrom, and watched as he defeated the other members of the Blood, before tying a noose around their necks, seemingly preparing to hang them. As her name was called by Helstrom, Smith came forward and revealed herself.
Noticing Gabriella Rosetti's presence, Smith criticized her for still siding with Helstrom as she considered that he was showing how evil he was. She then refused to beg for the lives of her partners, claiming that it would be useless, and dared Helstrom to kill her too since it would only prove that the Blood had been right to come after him in the first place. Smith gasped when Helstrom pretended that he would execute the other members, but he stopped them in time, and Smith was surprised when Helstrom explained that he forgave the Blood. She then reluctantly accepted to let him and Rosetti go after he released the other members of the Blood.[1]
Gabriella Rosetti's Child[]
- "If I wasn't seeing it, I wouldn't believe it. Doesn't look like you have much time, Sister."
- ―Esther Smith to Gabriella Rosetti[src]
Smith was contacted by Terrazi at the request of Gabriella Rosetti, who had been impregnated by Basar to give birth to Kthara's new body. Smith directly stated that there was no stopping her baby from being born, and that Rosetti would probably not survive it. Accusing Daimon Helstrom, who Basar possessed, to be responsible for the whole situation, Smith decided to wait for the Demons to recapture Rosetti, and planned to ambush them, after which Rosetti's baby would be placed in a coma to contain the threat.
Although Rosetti initially rejected the plan, Smith insisted, claiming that evil would always exist in the world under many forms and that they had to fight it forever. They thus followed the plan, confronting Basar, Magoth and Raum as they arrived. However, out of fear that the Demons would perpetrate a massacre, Smith was asked by Rosetti to let her go with the Demons. Smith initially refused, claiming that Rosetti was only going to her death, but eventually agreed to let the Demons take her.
Later, Smith was reunited with Finn Miller, now free of Magoth's possession, and Rosetti, who had given birth to her baby, leaving her profoundly disillusioned and embittered about Helstrom, who had failed to protect her. Smith and Miller thus welcomed Rosetti among the ranks of the Blood, sharing a drink with her as they would now work together to hunt down demons, including the Helstrom siblings.[4]
Personality[]
- "As hard as we try, we can't just kill evil, Sister. It's always there. In some form or another, in us."
- ―Esther Smith to Gabriella Rosetti[src]
Smith was utterly dedicated to her task as a Blood leader, which was coordinating a hunt for Demons wherever they were hiding in order to prevent them from wreaking havoc on the world of Humans. She accomplished this purpose, which had been fueled by the loss of her husband and daughter and her hatred of Demons, including the mighty Marduk Kurios, through a very pragmatic approach, for example placing possessed people in comas with little hope of being able to release them one day. In her war against Demons, Smith was also willing to have people she considered her allies put in harm's way, as she captured Caretaker to try out several blades on an old wound of his, and used Finn Miller as bait to be possessed by Demons, which caused him to be controlled by Magoth. Conversely, Smith was also able to work with her former enemies when she deemed it relevant, such as when she welcomed Gabriella Rosetti in the Blood even though they had previously fought on opposing sides. Before the arrival of Basar in the world, Smith had also shown Caretaker some respect by choosing not to come after Daimon and Ana Helstrom even though they were of demonic heritage and she considered them to be nothing more than "breathing mistakes", refusing to see them as anything other than Demons even though they were half human.
In the end, Smith had a very cynical view of the world, claiming that evil would always exist one way or another, and that the fight against it would go on forever, with the war against demons being a simple aspect of it. Being engaged in a war against beings of incredible power, she understood the need to find powerful enough weapons to match their might, and had a little fear of death, as she was willing to let Daimon kill her simply to prove that evil was rooted deep within him.

Weapons[]
- Shard: Smith found a fragment of a demonic dagger previously owned by Marduk Kurios and that had been retrieved by Caretaker when he had rescued Ana Helstrom. Smith intended to have this dagger used on demonic beings such as Daimon Helstrom and Kthara in order to rid the world from their influence, although the Blood was never actually able to fully use it.
