The Energy Shield is a shield made of energy that expands from Phil Coulson's Prosthetic Hand.
As Coulson and Melinda May came to JT James' cabin in their search for Hive, they hid inside a hole in the floor from a bomb. The bomb exploded, and Coulson defended May and himself from it by using the Energy Shield.
During the Attack on Jeffrey Mace, Coulson, Alphonso Mackenzie and Jeffrey Mace found themselves outnumbered and nearly defenseless as the Mace had used up all of his Patriot Serum and no longer had super strength as a result. Coulson used the Energy Shield again to defend himself and Jeffrey Mace from the gunshots of ex-HYDRA operatives, who had been hired by the Watchdogs until their allies arrived to assist them.
While fighting against the Superior onboard the Ivanov Oil Platform, Coulson was pinned against a wall as the Superior put a gun under his chin and prepared to execute him. In response, Coulson activated his Energy Shield and cut through the Superior's Life-Model Decoy face, exposing his Quantum Brain and killing him.
Coulson was deprived of Energy Shield during his whole time in the 2091 Lighthouse. However, he was able to use it again when he returned into his time. During the Infiltration into Qovas' Ship, Coulson used the Energy Shield to protect both himself and May. As Remorath fired at them, Coulson and May shared their first kiss while being protected by the Energy Shield.

- In the comics, the Energy Shield was used by Captain America, given to him by Sharon Carter, while his shield was being repaired. Phil Coulson also used the Energy Shield, having stolen it during the short period of time where he was no longer a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
- Tony Stark's latest suit can create an identical energy shield of a blue energy circle whose expanding out of the user's wrest, but lack the symbol of the eagle that marking S.H.I.E.L.D..
