"I doubt Hank ever mentioned my father; why would he? Elihas Starr. They were colleagues at S.H.I.E.L.D., quantum research. Until my father dared to disagree with The Great Hank Pym. You had him fired, oh, and discredited for good measure."
Ava Starr[src]

Elihas Starr was a S.H.I.E.L.D. scientist who had worked with Hank Pym and Bill Foster on quantum research until Pym had him fired and discredited. Starr moved to Argentina with his wife Catherine and their daughter Ava, continuing with his research until he and his wife were accidentally killed during a quantum experiment that caused Ava's unstable state.

Quantum Research

Confronted by Ant-Man and the Wasp

"We wouldn't be here if you hadn't shut me out, Hank, but god forbid Dr. Henry Pym ever listen to somebody else!"
"So that's your excuse for being a traitor?"
―Elihas Starr and Hank Pym[src]
Elihas Starr was the partner to Hank Pym and Bill Foster who together worked on harnessing the powers of the Quantum Realm. Starr was a complicated person, as while he cared for his wife, Catherine, and daughter, Ava, he wanted more and plotted to steal Pym's plans to work on the Quantum Realm. However, Pym found out and fired and discredited him, forcing Starr and his family to go into hiding.

Sometime later, Starr managed to recreate Pym's Quantum Realm plans. Unfortunately, Starr was clearly not as smart or patient as him, as the device overloaded and threatened to explode. Starr ordered Catherine and Ava to flee, but Ava decided to stay with her father, as she did not want him to be alone. Catherine came back to grab her, but it was too late. Starr and Catherine perished in the explosion, while Ava miraculously survived, albeit with powers.[1]

Ava's Instability

The consequences of Starr's research would have lethal consequences on his daughter Ava, as she had developed quantum imbalance that would not only cause her to live a hard life as an assassin of SHIELD, but eventually began to kill her as well. Foster, who was good friends with Elihas and pitied him for his situation, took Ava in and became her father figure in the absence of Elihas. Though it was Elihas who had doomed Ava to the life she had to live, Ava bore her father no ill will and only resented Hank for his discreditment of her father. Hank himself despite his discreditment of Elihas never intended Elihas or Ava to suffer the fate they suffered and felt guilty but refused against having Janet van Dyne's quantum energies be extracted to cure Ava, knowing it would kill her, and instead promised to find a way to save her. After Janet was rescued, pitying Ava for her disease, she forgave Ava's attempt to extract her quantum energy and voluntarily donated it to her, temporarily stabilizing her.[1]

  • In the comics, Elihas Starr was a scientist working at an atomic research center for the government until he was fired due to charges of espionage. He earned the nickname Egghead due to the unusual egg-shape of his skull. Starr was also a member of the super-villain group known as Intelligencia which is composed of the smartest villains in the Marvel Universe.
