Egypt, officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country located primarily in the northeast corner of Africa.
History[]
Ancient Egypt[]
Ennead[]
The Ennead were worshipped by ancient Egyptians. Ammit, the goddess of retribution, was overthrown and imprisoned in a tomb by the other gods, who then commanded a medjay named Senfu to hide the tomb from the others gods in case they decide to show mercy to Ammit.
The Ennead decided to use human avatars to observe and not interfere in human conflict, but the god Khonshu refused to abandon humanity and was banished. Khonshu began to use avatars under the title Moon Knight to deliver justice to evil doers.[2]
Coventry[]
In 1942, the Royal Air Force built a base at a classified location in Egypt, naming it Coventry. Over time, the base was used as a covert facility by S.H.I.E.L.D.
The Coventry was believed to be decommissioned in 1948 by the Egyptian Security Forces, but the Joint Task Force determined that it continued to be active for S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives.[3]
Abdallah El-Faouly's Life[]
Layla Abdallah El-Faouly was born in Egypt[2] to Abdallah El-Faouly, a renowned archeologist.[4] Abdallah often allowed Layla to accompany him at dig sites, which Lagaro disapproved of.[2] Abdallah went on a mission with the mercenaries Marc Spector and Raul Bushman. However, Bushman got greedy and shot everyone present, killing El-Faouly and taking the wealth for himself. Meanwhile, Spector dragged himself into a nearby temple and was approached by Khonshu, who gave Spector a suit and made Spector his avatar.[5] Spector found Layla El-Faouly, who had made many enemies in Egypt, and could not bring himself to tell her the truth about her father. The pair fell in love and got married.[4]
Aerodynamic Marvel Rescue[]
Tony Stark, using his newly created identity as Iron Man to establish world peace, was asked by General Turner at the Pentagon to evacuate to Egypt a pilot shot down in Congo. Stark learnt that those responsible for the attack were members of the Congolese Army in league with the Ten Rings, and that the pilot was part of a field test of a prototype vehicle designed by Justin Hammer.
The real objective was to make Stark kill the Congolese Army members, masquerading as an act of self-defense during the rescue, but Stark was able to see past Turner's lies and rescued the pilot without bloodshed. General Thaddeus Ross ordered Stark to land at Cairo, with Stark cutting the communication to show his weariness of being manipulated by the United States Armed Forces.
Iron Man arrived at the Cairo West Air Base, placing the pilot under medical care. Stark then confronted Ross about their intentions of making him kill the soldiers. Having researched Ross' involvement in experiments of genetic enhancements for military exploitation, Stark warned him not to put any more innocents in danger just to advance a military agenda before leaving Egypt.[6]
S.H.I.E.L.D. Safehouse[]
- "Well it's no Four Seasons."
"As far as safe houses go, it's not bad. Phuket didn't even have mattresses."
"Yeah, but Cairo had thousand thread count sheets with that sateen finish." - ―Antoine Triplett and John Garrett[src]
S.H.I.E.L.D. agents John Garrett and Antoine Triplett visited one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s safehouses in Cairo during one of their missions. This particular safehouse impressed the agents, later comparing it to the one in Sydney, as Cairo's safehouse even had luxury thousand-thread-count sheets, with a sateen finish.[7]
Project Insight[]
- "Zola's algorithm is a program... for choosing Insight's targets."
"What targets?"
"You. A TV anchor in Cairo, the Undersecretary of Defense, a high school valedictorian in Iowa City..." - ―Jasper Sitwell and Captain America[src]
In 2014, Egypt was one of the intended targets of Project Insight, as some of its citizens were deemed a threat for HYDRA's plans. Jasper Sitwell explicitly referred to a TV anchor living in Cairo as one of the targets for Insight. The country was not shot as Captain America and his allies were able to change the intended targets and stop HYDRA in time.[8]
Moon Knight's Adventures[]
Marc Spector's Quest[]
Marc Spector, under orders from Khonshu, traveled to Giza, Egypt to prepare to stop the Scarab of Ammit from reaching Ammit's tomb. He stayed at hotel in Cairo, where he drank and saw Steven Grant in a mirror, upset.[9]
Fighting Disciples of Ammit[]
In 2025, Marc Spector arrived in Cairo, a city of Egypt, to find somebody who could locate Arthur Harrow's digging team. However, the informant was after was killed by the Disciples of Ammit, who had discovered that Spector was in Cairo. Spector began to fight against the Disciples of Ammit, managing to avoid all of their knife attacks. He gained the upper hand on Alpha, one of the disciples, and had the knife to his throat. Just then, Steven Grant took over and tried to ride an Egyptian cab out of Egypt.
Spector began fronting again and left the cab, confronting the Disciples. He fought against Beta and Alpha, but Grant distracted him by trying to take over, allowing him to black out. His other alter, Jake Lockley, killed all of the disciples. After taking control again, Spector was ordered by Khonshu to interrogate the last surviving disciple, who chose to die instead of talk.[2]
Ennead Meeting[]
After failing to gather information, Marc Spector and Khonshu decided to try to recruit the help of the other Ennead. Khosnhu started an eclipse to signal the gods. Noticing the eclipse, the Ennead Council summoned Spector and Khonshu to the inside of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Chamber of Gods. The Council also summoned Arthur Harrow to judge him, and Khonshu, in control of Spector's body, accused him of trying to summon Ammit in front of the other Ennead.
Harrow successfully disputed their accusation, convincing the Council that Khonshu is currently blinded by paranoia and jealousy, and that they should not trust him. He proved this to the Ennead Council by mentioning how Khonshu was using an unwell Marc Spector to do his bidding. The Council eventually concluded that Harrow was innocent. However, Yatzil chose to secretly tell Spector that he could find Ammit's tomb using information in Senfu's sarcophagus, which Anton Mogart owned.[2]
Fight at Anton Mogart's Estate[]
Marc Spector looked for Anton Mogart, and was interrupted by Layla El-Faouly, who insisted on joining Spector's quest. El-Faouly arranged a meeting with Mogart, and they took a boat ride to his estate, during which they reminisced about their marriage. They arrived at the estate and greeted Mogart, who allowed them to look at the sarcophagus. Spector and Steven Grant negotiated momentarily, but Grant eventually agreed to help Spector find Senfu's star map on his sarcophagus. Mogart found Spector's behavior suspicious, so he threatened Spector, but got cut off by the arrival of Arthur Harrow. Harrow offered Mogart the Scarab of Ammit in exchange for Senfu's sarcophagus, but Spector put on his suit and began fighting through Mogart's men, resulting in a battle. Spector and El-Faouly defeated Mogart's men and managed to flee, where they drove to the desert and discussed Spector's past.[2]
Ennead Council Decision[]
Marc Spector and Layla El-Faouly struggled to put the map together, so El-Faouly agreed to allow Steven Grant to front so that they could put the map together. Grant assembled the map and explained to El-Faouly that the map would be useless unless they knew what the sky looked like on the night that Ammit was imprisoned, and Khonshu arrived, saying that he remembered the night well. Khonshu and Grant turned back the sky together, causing a spectacle as people in Egypt saw the sky changing. The Ennead Council reconvened and imprisoned Khonshu in an ushabti, while El-Faouly tracked down the tomb.[2] Grant then passed out while he and El-Faouly were attacked. El-Faouly managed to fight them off and the pair drove away, eventually arriving at the tomb where Ammit was being held.[4]
Search for Ammit's Tomb[]
Steven Grant and Layla El-Faouly entered Ammit's tomb together, and began exploring, finding that Arthur Harrow's men had already entered and were exploring. They realized that the tomb was shaped like the Eye of Horus, and that the ushabti would therefore be in the tunnel representing the tongue. They came across a room where the Heka Priests resided, where they hid while watching a Heka Priest kill Billy Fitzgerald. The two were separated, with El-Faouly getting chased into a room with a large cliff and Grant finding Ammit's avatar's sarcophagus. El-Faouly managed to kill the Heka Priest while Grant realized that they were in Alexander the Great's tomb.
Harrow confronted El-Faouly, implying to her that Spector was responsible for the death of El-Faouly's father, upsetting her. Grant recovered Ammit's ushabti when El-Faouly arrived and demanded that Marc Spector begin fronting in his body. Spector explained that Raul Bushman killed El-Faouly's father, and that the guilt led to Spector meeting El-Faouly, upsetting her. Harrow's men arrived and El-Faouly hid, while Spector began to confront them. However, the confrontation led to Harrow shooting Spector,[4] resulting in his death.[5]
Harrow took Ammit's ushabti from Spector's body and left the tomb with his disciples, and El-Faouly followed. They began driving to Giza, when they were stopped by the Egyptian Patrol Agency, who demanded Harrow's papers. However, Harrow instead began judging the guards, killing those who were unworthy. El-Faouly prepared to kill Harrow, but Taweret possessed one of the deceased guards and stopped her, sending a message from Spector in the Duat that they need Khonshu's help to defeat Harrow.[10]
Release of Ammit[]
Arthur Harrow led his followers to the Great Pyramid of Giza, which they infiltrated while the rest of the Ennead Council assembled their avatars. The Ennead prepared to fight Harrow, but he killed them easily and released Ammit, who told Harrow that his scales were not balanced and chose him to be her avatar. Layla El-Faouly freed Khonshu, who asked her to be his avatar, but El-Faouly refused, so Khonshu confronted Ammit. However, Marc Spector and Steven Grant managed to resurrect themselves and escaped the Tomb of Alexander the Great, where they were confronted by Khonshu. Khonshu agreed to allow Spector and Grant their freedom once Ammit was defeated, while El-Faouly was told by Selim that Ammit could only be defeated while imprisoned in a human body. In order to help in the fight, El-Faouly agreed to become Taweret's temporary avatar and was given armor to help fight.
Harrow began unleashing Ammit's power on the city of Cairo, and his followers judged people to be killed or saved. However, Spector and Grant confronted Harrow, leading to a battle between the them, El-Faouly, and Harrow while Khonshu fought Ammit. Khonshu was nearly defeated by Ammit, and Spector was nearly killed by Harrow, when Jake Lockley suddenly began fronting and massacred Ammit's followers, nearly killing Harrow before Spector resumed control. Spector and El-Faouly performed a ceremony to trap Ammit in Harrow's body, and Khonshu asked Spector to kill Ammit. However, Spector refused, and Khonshu agreed to fulfill his part of their deal and free Spector and Grant from being his avatar.[10]
