Ego is a Celestial being who achieved self-consciousness and in search of meaning for his existence, decided to transform all life into extensions of himself. Given that his power would not be enough for this task, he started to sire children until one of them became an heir of his own powers, and thus able to help him. He eventually fathered the young Peter Quill, who inherited his powers, and together they travelled to his home planet, Earth, to finally start the Expansion.

Quest for Expansion[]
Finding Peter[]
Ego was a Celestial who wanted to spread his reach all throughout the cosmos. In order to do this, he went to many planets including Earth, where he fell in love with Meredith Quill. The two soon had a son, Peter Quill. However, Ego had left the planet by that point. Later on, Ego hired Yondu Udonta and the Ravagers to kidnap Peter from Earth and bring him to Ego.
Ego shows Peter Quill his expansion plan
Once Udonta arrived with Peter, Ego kneeled down to his son and took his walkman, saying he would not need it anymore. Ego then proceeded to use his powers to destroy the walkman and smush it down into energy. He then took this energy ball and passed it to Peter, showing how much more they could do with their powers. He proceeded to show Peter his expansion, consisting of multiple planets being engulfed and covered by a blue substance.[1]
Starting the Expansion[]
Ego attempts to connect with Peter Quill
In 1988, Ego sent Peter Quill to several planets including Earth in order to get it ready for the expansion. Within days, Ego went to check on Quill, calling for him through their connection. However, he was ignored by his son, confusing him. Ego was notified that Quill's ship crashed in New York City. Ego remarked how he would have to finish what Quill started.[1]

Ego prepares to attack and defeat Thor
Ego made his way to the Mojave Desert where he faced the Avengers and United States Army. Ego asked for his seedling back, but Thor refused. Thor flew towards Ego, only for the Celestial to send a pillar of rock at him. Ego then demanded the seedling. Peggy Carter refused, saying that he had come to destroy them. Ego said that she was wrong; he had come to save them, as he was lying as he is planning spread himself across the cosmos as a deadly disease.
Ego creates an army of copies of himself
In response, Ego forged many copies of himself in order to fight the Avengers. The Avengers initially struggled, but Goliath enlarged himself. Therefore, Ego created a rock casing around him, reaching the height of mountains. He then spread out his energy to the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility to grab the seedling. He succeeded and brought it back to him.
Before Ego could use it, Peter Quill and Ant-Man arrived at the scene. Much to Ego's surprise, Quill was helping the Avengers. Ego argued with his son about this. Ego tried to say that everything dies eventually, getting Quill mad about how Meredith died. Ego then revealed he killed Meredith. An angry Peter proceeded to take the seedling and squished it into energy just like Ego did to his walkman earlier. Ego was then met with a giant energy blast by Peter, destroying his corporeal form.[1]

- "The boy may have destroyed Ego's corporeal form, but his planet still lives. And the universe will not know peace until I have avenged the ones we've lost."
"So, what, Thunder Brother? No invite?"
"Perhaps you forgot, Goldilocks, we have sort of a team thing going on here."

After celebrating their victory, Thor informed the Avengers that he was going to go after Ego who was still alive as long as his planet remained intact despite the destruction of his avatar. Rather than letting Thor go alone, the Avengers joined him in hunting Ego down with Peter and Hope van Dyne joining the team.[1]
